Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Where Were Your Ancestral Families in 1920?

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along - cue the Mission Impossible music!):

1) Where did your ancestral families reside in 1920?  Do you know their addresses or locations?   Have you visited the home? Who was enumerated in the 1920 in each family?  Are any of your ancestral families missing from the 1920 U.S. Census even if they should be in the census?

2)  Put it in your own blog post, in a comment to this post, or in a Facebook post.  Please leave a link in a comment to this post.

That's all - just two parents, four grandparents, five great-grandparents, and two 2nd great-grandparents were alive on 1 January 1920.  All potential living ancestors were enumerated.

I have been inside only the Henry A. Carringer home in San Diego.  I grew up in the second floor apartment above the first floor after the house was improved and moved to 2115 30th Street.

I have driven and walked by the other ancestral homes listed here, but not been inside them.  The 290 Central Street home in Leominster has been demolished since my last visit.

=============================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, provides this list to me from a program he wrote that compares the current FamlySearch record collections list to the previous week's list.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

  I received this from Findmypast today:

=========================================

Search New & Exclusive Records This Findmypast Friday

With new and exclusive records from New York, Shropshire and Yorkshire, where will your past take you this weekend? Here's what's new on Findmypast this week.

New York Catholic Parish Registers Browse

You can now explore this important collection page-by-page along with recent new additions from Harlem, The Bronx, Yonkers and Ulster County. Over 244,000 Images taken from microfilm and original registers from over 200 parishes are available to browse.

Including births, baptisms, marriages, confirmations, communions and deaths, these exclusive records are an excellent resource for tracing your Catholic roots. As well as providing essential dates and locations, many records will also reveal the names of your ancestor’s parents (including mother’s maiden name) or spouse.

Check the parish list to see which churches' records are only available in this browsable resource. And remember, if you're looking for a specific record, you can also search for baptisms and marriages.

Shropshire Quarter Sessions Rolls Index, 1831-1920

Exclusive to Findmypast, discover if your Shropshire ancestors faced their local judge in these new court indexes. A wide variety of administrative record types are included, such as appointments, bastardy papers, inquests, oaths of allegiance and petitions, as well as the whole panoply of records surrounding criminal cases.

Each record consists of a transcript that, along with the defendants name and the date of their hearing, provide all the information required to identify a specific record within this time period. The original documents can only be consulted at the Shropshire Archives.

To help you make the most of the records, Findmypast have compiled this handy list with each document type, their abbreviations and a brief description on where you'll find them.

Yorkshire, Ecclesall Bierlow Workhouse Admissions 1883-1915

Covering parts of Yorkshire and Derbyshire, this collection can help you trace relatives on the breadline. In these transcripts, you'll discover birth dates, occupations, dates of admission and more. The index has been created by the Sheffield District Family History Society who have transcribed original admission registers held by the Sheffield Archives.

The Ecclesall Bierlow workhouse was first built at the Sharrow Moor. It originally housed between 60 to 80 inmates but expanded significantly over time to include an asylum block, vagrants’ wards, laundry block, and children’s cottage homes. It also had space for boys’ training workshops in tailoring and shoemaking. By 1896 it could house up to 600 inmates and admitted roughly 5,000 each year with a weekly average of 100 admissions.

Newspapers

Findmypast’s local newspaper archives continue to grow. Brand new to the collection this week are:

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

Only one book about the Wheeler families of Concord, Massachusetts provides significant information about Esther Wheeler's birth family.  Albert Gallatin Wheeler published The Genealogical and Encyclopedic History of the Wheeler Family In America  in 1914[1].  Other books have information about her ancestral families in Concord, Massachusetts and Cranbrook, England.

Esther Wheeler was born 1 December 1678 in Concord, Massachusetts, the daughter and seventh of nine children of John and Sarah (Larkin) Wheeler of Concord[1,3].

She married Samuel Prescott (1674-1758) of Lancaster, Massachusetts on 5 May 1698 in Concord[1-2] and the marriage was also recorded in Lancaster[5].  Samuel was the son of Jonathan and Dorothy (Heald) Prescott of Lancaster.

Samuel and Esther (Wheeler) Prescott had nine children, the first three born in Lancaster, last six born and recorded in the Concord town vital records.  They were:

*   Esther Prescott (1699-1756), married 1719 Robert Conant (1699-1773).
*  Dorothy Prescott (1702-1774), married 1721 James Hildreth (1698-1761).
*  Amos Prescott (1705-????), married 1731 Ruth --?-- (1707-????).
*  Mary Prescott (1708-????), married 1729 Timothy Fletcher (1707-1780).
*  Sarah Prescott (1710-????), married about 1731 --?-- Randall (1706-????)
*  Dorcas Prescott (1712-1803), married 1738 Samuel Minot (1706-1766).
*  Abigail Prescott (1716-1754), married 1739 Isaac Fox (1713-1791).
*  Rebecca Prescott (1719-1762), married 1741 Gershom Davies (1714-1787).
*  Dinah Prescott (1723-????).

When they married, the family resided in Lancaster, then moved to Concord in about 1707 and their land was located in the new town of Acton, Massachusetts in 1735.

Esther died 1 May 1756 at age 77 in Acton, Massachusetts[4].  There is no known burial location, although she was probably buried in Acton.

NOTE: In 2014, Amy Johnson Crow suggested a weekly blog theme of "52 Ancestors" in her blog post 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks on the No Story Too Small blog. I have extended this theme in 2021 for an eighth year to 416 Ancestors in 416 Weeks. The list of 52 Ancestors biographies from my great-grandparents to the 7th great-grandparents (in work) is in https://www.geneamusings.com/p/ancestor-biographies.html.
