Family Tree Magazine has a New Genealogy Book: "Beginner's Guide to Genealogy"

I received an email today highlighting a new book from Family Tree Magazine titled Beginner's Guide to Genealogy: How to Get Started With Your Family Research.

The price is $39.97.

The book description is:

Start your family history research! This easy-to-understand guide will help you find your ancestors efficiently and with confidence. Inside, you'll find expert advice on the basics of genealogy, with tutorials for building a family tree, finding and understanding key genealogy records, and organizing your files and research, plus a roundup of can't-miss beginner-friendly genealogy websites.

You’ll love the Beginner's Guide to Genealogy Book if…

  • You're new to family history research and don't know where to start
  • You want to get a family member or friend interested in genealogy
  • You'd love to go "back to the basics" and revisit work you've already done
  • You're interested in 104 pages of family history research advice

Here are some tips you’ll find in the Beginner's Guide to Genealogy Book:

  • Move backward in time. Start with the most recent members of your family (you and your parents), then carefully document each generation as you go backward in time. This will keep you from making rash jumps—you don't want to end up researching the wrong ancestors!
  • Talk to your relatives. Ask any living relatives about their memories. Don't ask just about facts and dates—get the stories of their growing up and of the ancestors they remember. Try to phrase questions with "why," "how," and "what."
  • Always check your sources. Verify any information you find in family trees created by other people using records and documents. Apply this same mentality to "hints" generated by sites like Ancestry.com and FamilySearch, which can be helpful but are not foolproof.

Contents of the Beginner's Guide to Genealogy Book:

Part 1: Jump-Starting Your Research

  • 10 Steps to Start Building Your Family Tree
  • Counting Cousins: How to Calculate Cousinhood
  • Busted!: 10 Genealogy Myths Debunked

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Are You Experimenting With Artificial Intelligence for Genealogy?

  Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night Again -

Time For Some More Genealogy Fun!!

Come on, everybody, join in and accept the mission and execute it with precision.

1)  Are you experimenting with Artifical Intelligence (AI) for genealogy and family history?  What have you learned so far?  What have you done to date?  What GPTs have you used?  What results have you had - good or bad?

2) Tell us about your AI experience  in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook post.  Please leave a link on this post if you write your own post.

Here's mine:

*  I started using ChatGPT in early 2023, thinking it would be able to answer my questions about my ancestors.  I learned that it's not Google or a search engine, but a language model.  It provided lots of false information when it did not know an answer to a question.  It needs to learn things before it can provide correct information to you.

*  Writing an AI Narrative Report in ChatGPT for David Auble (1817-1894).  I input a timeline and had ChatGPT write a genealogical sketch.  This worked out pretty well.

*  Writing My Obituary With ChatGPT 3.5.  I input a series of highlights about my supposed life and ChstGPT wrote a decent obituary.

*  ChatGPT 3.5 Offers Genealogy Book Recommendations.  I asked ChatGPT for book recmmendations and received a decent list of actual books.

*  New MyHeritage Feature -- Artificial Intelligence AI Record Finder(tm); New MyHeritage Feature -- Artificial Intelligence AI Biographer(tm);  and MyHeritage AI Biographer Feature Is Only on Family View.  I tried out the two new MyHeritage AI features.  The Record Finder is limited by the lsck of comprehensive record collections at MyHeritage.  The Biographer does a decent job of creatinga short biography based on a MyHeritage tree profile.

*  Exploring the AncestryAI Feature on Ancestry.com and Ask AncestryAI: What Was Hilperton, Wiltshire Like in 1848?  The infromation provided to date is based on social and cultural history material, which is often generalized for a specific time and location.

*  First Look at EmulateMe: Creating an AI Avatar and Short Audios/Videos; and Second Look at EmulateMe: Creating My Father's Avatar and Audio/Video Chats.  I uploaded a biography of myself, an avatar, and did a voice reading, and users can ask my avatar questions about my life.

*  MyHeritage DeepStory Creates a Great Short Audio/Visual Biography.  The user can have a talking image saying things based on a MyHeritage tree profile.  The user can add to and edit the text.

*  The FamilySearch Full-Text Search feature reveal was eye-opening - the system uses AI to seach for, transcribe and index a page of handwritten text.  A game-changer because it finds names hiding in pages of handwritten text.  It works pretty well for most pages of land deed and probate records.  See Testing the Full Text Search in FamilySearch Labs - An Immediate Success!! and Dear Randy: "Why Can't I Find Barnstable County, Massachusetts Probate Records on FamilySearch Full-Text Search?"

*  I used Google Bard (now Gemini) and Microsoft CoPilot to create colorful images of genealogists with family members, family trees, DNA, ancestral homes, and more, on Facebook.  Somehow, the really fantastic genealogy and DNA oriented images have eluded me (I did create the one below on Microsoft CoPilot!).

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

52 Relatives: Emma (Richman/mond) Fitts (1856-1921) of Hilperton Marsh, Wiltshire and Windham County, Connecticut

I have posted over 500 genealogical sketches of  my ancestors back through the 7th great-grandparents - see the list in 52 Ancestors Biographies.

This "52 Relatives" theme is a weekly series to document the lives of siblings of my ancestors with relatively short genealogical sketches, including important events, and with source citations.  These relatives lived and died within a family structure, and deserve a genelaogical sketch - they were integral parts and important persons in the lives of my ancestral families.  I will post the sketches on my Ancestry Member Tree and in the FamilySearch Family Tree.

                                               =================================

Emma Richman was born on 12 May 1856 in Hilperton Marsh, Wiltshire, England, the daughter of James and Hannah (Rich) Richman.[1-2]  She was baptized in the Hilperton St. Michael's and All Angels parish church on 6 July 1856.[3]  The Connecticut death record and the Find A Grave record say she was born 12 May 1857, but surely it was 1856.

The passenger list of the British Ship Osprey that departed Bristol and arrived in New York City on 14 November 1856 includes Hannah Richman and five children:[4]

  • Hannah Richman - age 32, female, a wife
  • James Richman - age 7, male, a child
  • Thomas Richman - age 6, male, a child
  • Louisa Richman - age 4, female, a child
  • Elizabeth Richman - age 3, female, a child
  • Ann Richman - an infant, female, a child

Her father, James Richman, had migrated from Wiltshire to Rhode Island in late 1855 before Emma was born.  After emigration to America, the family used Richmond as their surname.

In the 1860 United States census, the James Richmond family resided in Burrillville, Providence County, Rhode Island.[5] The household included:
