Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- What Are Your 2022 Plans/Goals/Resolutions for Your Genealogy Research

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along - cue the Mission Impossible music!):

1)  It's the New Year, and many readers and bloggers have already made resolutions, or goals, or plans for one or more tasks or projects.  Or they haven't yet, but could, or should.

2)  For this SNGF, please tell us what plans you've made, or what goals you've stated, or what resolutions you've averred for 2022.  Writing them down may help you achieve them.  Do one or more as you wish.

3)  Put it in your own blog post, in a comment to this post, or in a Facebook post.  Please leave a link in a comment to this post so readers can find your resolutions/goals/plans.

Here's mine:

I usually don't do this because it seems that I always fail (yes, I think I won the ##GOPA for 2021 again  - see below).  I stopped working on 2021 Goal #1 when Linda had her accident.  I partially accomplished Goal #2 and totally failed Goal #3.

However, I will state three goals that I hope to accomplish in 2022, but two of them are essentially the same goals that I set last year at this time:

*  Goal #1 is to continue working on the Descendants Reports of my 4th great-grandparents.  I have done 8 of them so far (25% of 32 couples) in 2021.  I take what I have and then research descendants wherever I find them, and from whatever source I find them, and try to support the relationships with record sources.  With 24 more reports to do, this is a big goal, but I have a lot already done.  A reasonable goal would be to do eight more, I think.

Therefore 2022 Goal #1 is to work more on the Descendant reports for my 4th great-grandparents and publish the Descendants Reports.

*  Goal #2 is from 2020 and 2021 - to keep gathering my triangulated DNA match data from the chromosome browsers on FamilyTreeDNA, MyHeritageDNA, 23andMe, and GEDmatch and update my DNA Painter display of which bits of every chromosome in my DNA came from which ancestors.  I have done the first pass with DNA matches with known common ancestors, and have about 25% of my chromosomes mapped.  I need to find more known common ancestors (and Goal #1 is supposed to help that!) for my high-value DNA matches using available records and research using my Skeleton tree on Ancestry.  Along with this is to do more work in Genetic Affairs to cluster my matches to help the process along.

Therefore 2022 Goal #2 is to continue to do this in 2022 and produce a prettier picture of my ancestor's contributions to my DNA from DNA Painter.

3)  Goal #3 is left over from 2021 - to update my eBooks on my ancestral families and descendants of my surname study families (last done in 2012 and they are still on Scribd.com (see   https://www.scribd.com/user/43095920/Randy-Seaver), and are searchable).  I need to update them because I have found a wealth of information on my ancestral families and descendants of my surname study progenitors in the last 8 years.  I will do this using one of the genealogy software programs that formats ancestor and descendants reports in a standard format that looks best.  I will include sources, but not notes or media (the 2012 books are already hundreds of pages without them).

Here is what I think the Seaver books will look like:

Those are my three goals for 2022 - what are yours?

My overall goal for 2022 is to stay alive (COVID go away - and take Omicron, Pi, Rho and Tau variants with you!), visit my wife every day in the memory care facility and to see my daughters and grandkids more often.

##What is GOPA - I know that inquiring minds want to know:  Did I win the "Genealogist's Outstanding Procrastination Award" for 2021?  If not, who did?

RootsMagic Genealogy Database Statistics Update - 1 January 2022

I last updated my Genea-Musings readers on the "numbers" in my RootsMagic genealogy family tree database in:

*  My RootsMagic Genealogy Database Statistics Update - 1 January 2021

*  My RootsMagic Genealogy Database Statistics Update - 31 December 2019

*  My RootsMagic Genealogy Database Statistics Update - 31 December 2018

*  Genealogy Database Statistics Update - 1 January 2014

I was curious to see how much progress I had made in the last 12 months.

Here is the family tree database summary from RootsMagic on 1 January 2022:

Here are the "numbers" from 1 January 2022 in my RootsMagic database (with increases from 1 January 2021):

*  68,032 persons (+ 7,264)
*  27,481 families  (+ 2,708)
*  214,099 events  (+ 21,265)

*  13,263 Alternate names (+ 2,008)
*  17,667 places (+ 2,773)
*  2,164 sources ( + 84)
*  143,817 citations (+ 12,225)
*  1,591 Multi-media Items (+ 36)

*  3,203 Multimedia links (- 9)

*  46,603 Persons matched to FamilySearch Family Tree persons (+ 6,965)

In the past 12 months, I've averaged adding 19.9 persons, 7.4 families, 58.3 events and 33.5 source citations each day.  I try to work at least an hour in the evening adding content and sources to the database, although baseball, vacations and the holidays intervened on a lesser scale due to COVID.

 Consequently, I've  managed to reduce my  citations/person from 2.15 to 2.11, and my  citations/event from 0.676 to 0.672 this past year.  Obviously, I don't have a citation for every event, name or relationship, and in some cases I have more than one citation for an event, name or relationship.  At this rate, to reach 100% in citations/events will take about 8 more years!

I added 7,264 persons to my database in 2021, some in my 4th great-grandparents' descendant lines (including lines to DNA matches with known common ancestors), some in my one-name studies, a few in my grandchildren's trees (Danish and Italian too!), and some from further and ongoing research on my ancestral families.  My one-name studies include Seaver (with variations Sever, Seever, Sevier and plurals), Carringer, Auble, Vaux, Dill, and Buck in my tree, and McKnew in my wife's tree.

I "mine" new Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast, and FamilySearch databases and use RootsMagic WebHints for my ancestral and one-name study surnames, and add content and source citations.  I correct name, relationship, date and place errors found while working on the database.  I use RootsMagic to match my tree profiles to the FamilySearch Family Tree profiles, and exchange verified information both ways on a near-daily basis.

I added a new ancestral Ancestry Member Tree (AMT) on Ancestry.com in October 2021 with a new tree upload when RootsMagic 8 was able to synchronize with it.  I TreeShare every week now to keep the AMT up-to-date, which generates more Record Hints.  I do not attach Record Hints to that Ancestry Member Tree because I know that it will be replaced eventually, so doing that would be a time suck.  I uploaded a new MyHeritage tree in April 2021 and need to do that again soon.  I need to add a new Findmypast tree.  I review and manually add records from Ancestry Hints, MyHeritage Record Matches, Findmypast Record Hints, and FamilySearch Record Hints to my RootsMagic database to add content and sources to my family tree database.

Doing the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks challenge for an eighth year in 2021, along with deciding to start with my great-grandparents and doing it by ancestor chart numbers, has greatly improved the events, source citations and notes for the ancestors I write about.  I am now up to #635, in the seventh great-grandparents, at the end of 2021, doing them in ancestor chart number order.  When I post a new biography, I add the Notes and Sources to the FamilySearch Family Tree profile for that person.  I will continue this weekly meme because it helps me focus on one specific ancestor, and their family, each week and improves my database and my family history.

I did not visit a physical repository (e.g, Family History Library, local FamilySearch Library, or a regular library) this year to perform genealogical and family history research. My life situation precludes being away from home for more than two hours. I did lots of online research in commercial record providers (Ancestry, MyHeritage, Findmypast, Fold3, Newspapers.com, GenealogyBank, AmericanAncestors, etc.), and free record providers (FamilySearch, Find A Grave, Billion Graves, RootsWeb, etc). Since many Family Search Library catalog items are not available from home online, I have a to-do list for the local FamilySearch Library in order to use the digital microfilm that I cannot read at home, and will need to visit the local FSL to view them.

There are only so many hours in my genealogy day - usually 8 to 11 hours, but sometimes only 5 to 8 hours. I spend one to three hours each day reading blog posts and answering emails, one to three hours writing blog posts, an hour or two doing online research, one to three hours adding content and sources to the database, and the balance of my time doing society support tasks, creating presentations, participating in or watching webinars, analyzing my DNA matches, or working on other projects. My genealogy life is varied, and definitely not boring (I gave up doing boring genealogy things like extended client research, or going often to libraries and archives - with some exceptions!). I'm having great genealogy fun, but have no clue how long I can go on like this due to health or family circumstances.

My conclusion is:  I've made steady progress, and I'm actively improving my database in both quantity and quality, but still have a long way to go to have a "fully sourced and accurate" family tree.  It's better than it was, but it can still be improved.  The 4th great-grandparents descendants research study really blossomed this last year!  It is all a lifelong task, I think!
I truly need a genealogy clone or assistant.  I doubt that Siri, Alexa, Google Home or any other virtual assistant is yet capable of doing genealogy research, source citations, etc.

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, provides this list to me from a program he wrote that compares the current FamilySearch record collections list to the previous week's list.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Top 50 Most Viewed Posts in 2021 on Genea-Musings

 A)  Here are the Top 50 viewed Genea-Musings blog posts from 2021 that had the most page views in 2021 (from View Count statistics on the Google Blogger Posts page as of 30 December 2021):

1)  Findmypast announced major update to the National Burial Index For England & Wales (26 February 2021) - 3864 views
3)  Ancestry.com and Your Ancestry Member Tree (4 August 2021) - 2123 views
4)  Is This the Best Gravestone Ever? (8 February 2021) - 1940 views
5)  RootsTech Connect 2021 Class Sessions List Released (12 February 2021) - 1671 views

7)  Genealogy Pot-Pourri - Week Ending 2 August 2021 (2 August 2021) - 1254 views
8)  The Long-Awaited GEDCOM 7.0 is Here! (7 June 2021) - 1075 views

18)  Exploring RootsMagic 8 - #1 - the Main Screens (3 October 2021) - 892 views

45)  What's Coming Soon To Ancestry? (16 June 2021) - 683 views

46)  Disproving an AncestryDNA ThruLine (3 November 2021) - 672 views

Why 50?  Well, the plan was to do a Top 30.  I guessed that 600 views would be #30 this past year, and I was listing them week by week in order and ended up with over 60 on the list.  So I cut it to 50!

B)  The ten most popular Genea-Musings posts since 2007 (per Google Blogger) are:

1)  Microfilm Scanning at the FHL and FHC (posted 22 July 2009) - 76,910 views.

2)  1940 Census Enumeration District Maps Online at NARA Website (posted 18 July 2011) - 67,300 views.

3)  Genealogy Presentations on Slideshare.net (posted 28 January 2010) - 25,940 views.

4)  Dear Ancestry.com: Are You Fixing These Problems? (17 January 2019) - 17000 views

5)  Merry Christmas to All! (posted 25 December 2011) - 14,900 views.

6)  World records for number of children (posted 21 July 2006) - 14,600 views.

7)  Randy's NGS 2010 Photos - Post 1 (posted 4 May 2010) - 9,345 views

8)  RootsTech 2017 Blog Compendium -- UPDATED (posted 1 March 2017) - 8212 views

9)  Ancestry.com Says They Will Work on Technical Problems (posted 11 May 2018) - 7910 views

10)  Book Review: "The Spyglass File," by Nathan Dylan Goodwin (posted  29 September 2016) -- 6,410 views

C)  Of course, all of my blog posts are viewed by many more readers than those that go to the specific web page for the post - those who read them on a Genea-Musings archive page, those that read them in an RSS reader, or on a mobile device, and those that receive them via email (Feedburner still works for me!).

Another measure of popularity or readership might be in the number of comments generated by each post.  I don't think that is a reliable measure of popularity because of the proliferation of RSS reader usage, email usage, and mobile device usage, each of which require one or more click throughs to get to the comment box.  In addition, there are thousands of spam comments in the list (now Google doesn't block them and I'm too lazy to do it every day).

It certainly seems like readers search for Ancestry.com, Findmypast, DNA, Dear Randy, and genealogy software topics, and find my blog posts.  In recent years, my research posts - Amanuensis Monday, 52 Ancestors, Treasure Chest Thursday, etc. have made the Top 40 list.

D)  Previous "most popular" posts on Genea-Musings are:

E)  Readership of Genea-Musings went up a bit over the past year - perhaps more persons have started reading my blog (and other blogs) on a web browser or moved from a reader or email, or perhaps Genea-Musings has become more interesting and readers are excited by it.  For example, the 30th most viewed post last year had 642 views.  This year, the 30th most viewed post had 808 views and the 50th had 661 views.

Google says that there were 1.66 million page views for Genea-Musings in 2021, and 13.2 million page views all time (since 2007).  These numbers include views of "Pages" on Genea-Musings - the subject headings at the top of the page.

I wrote about 870 blog posts this year, compared to over 950 for most years since 2007.

F)  I wondered what the least viewed Genea-Musings post was in 2021.  I know that Surname Saturday, Treasure Chest Thursday, Wordless Wednesday, and Seavers in the News posts are not that popular (but some made the Top 50 this year).  The least viewed blog post in 2021 (to date) was Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1693 Marriage of John Smith and Ruth Cutler in Charlestown, Massachusetts posted 23 December 2021, with 91 views.
