Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - What Genealogy Resource Are You Thankful For?

It's Saturday Night -
time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:

1)  Elizabeth Swanay O'Neal has a monthly blog party for geneabloggers to write about a certain topic.  This month the topic is "What genealogy 'resource' are you thankful for this year?"

2)  Please join the blog party and write about your response on your own blog post, in a comment on this post and/or Elizabeth's post, or on Facebook.

Here's mine:

The genealogy resource that I am thankful this year for is the RootsMagic family tree software program.  I have been using it for over ten years now, and the program owners continue to provide more features and improvements on a regular basis.

This year, RootsMagic created and released the TreeShare and Ancestry WebHints features in Version 7.5 (it's now up to 7.5.4).  I add content (names, relationships, dates, places, notes, sources, media, etc.) to RootsMagic on a daily basis as my research and whim dictate.  Before TreeShare, I could not easily add content to my Ancestry Member Tree, or other online trees, without duplicating effort - typing or copy/pasting in the information.  With TreeShare, I can update my Ancestry Member Tree one person, and one event, at a time.  After updating my Ancestry Member Tree, Ancestry.com then finds Record Hints for tree person data that was added and/or modified.  I then add those Hints to my RootsMagic database and the cycle continues.

Using TreeShare, I can keep my Ancestry Member Tree up-to-date, can easily generate additional Record Hints, and can keep the "cousin-bait" machine going as other researchers find my Ancestry tree.  It has made me more efficient in adding content and sources to my RootsMagic family tree database.

In an earlier version, RootsMagic enabled adding and editing person data with the FamilySearch Family Tree, which I use almost daily.

I hope that RootsMagic will work with MyHeritage, Findmypast, WikiTree and Geni to enable a TreeShare-like feature so I can keep all of my online family trees up to date.
