The only significant error I see in the transcription and translation is the mother's name - in the record it is clearly Mette Chatrina Poulsdatter (not Mette Chatrine Bouls Datter).  The family was from Vesterlinnet, which Google Search told me was an area in Rødding (very near to the town of Gram).

5)  Hans Lauritzen Hede was born 3 October 1838 in Gram, Haderslev, Denmark, and was baptized in the church there.  His parents were Lauritz Pedersen Hede and Mette Chatrina Poulsdatter.  Hans married Kirstine Sorensen in 1863 in Gram, Haderslev, Denmark, and they had ten children. 

6)  Hans Lauritzen Hede is the 3rd great-grandfather of two of my grandsons in their father's ancestry through his son Hans Lauritzen Hede (1880-1940) who migrated to the United States in 1906.

I noted that the father and son in the record (and the line down to my grandsons) all have the surname Hede. The limited records I have before 1838 indicate that the last names were patronymics before then.  Hede was probably a local farm name. There is a Hedeland near Copenhagen. There is a wind farm and museum in Jutland with Hede as part of the name. The word "hede" in Danish appears to mean "heat" or "heath or moor."

Transcribing and Translating an Italian Marriage Record Using ChatGPT4 and Google

I have seen this done, but in the past when I tried to do this task, the transcription on ChatGPT4 did not read the handwriting well.  I tried it again today, and it worked better (although I needed some help translating one handwritten phrase). 

My grandsons' 2nd great-grandparents, Leone Giovanni Morandi (1894-1979) and Maria Rosa Angeli (1896-1991), were married on 15 September 1920 in Bagni di Lucca, Lucca Province, Italy.  I found their marriage record online on FamilySearch.

4)  I trusted ChatGPT and Google to get the typed words correct, and reviewed the handwritten words on the images and compared them to the transcription.  I found at least two mistakes:

• The words "Altogglio" and "Alto Muglo" in the second and third paragraphs of the transcription did not match the handwriting,  I searched the Google Map around Limano and Bagni di Lucca and did not find the transcribed "Altogglio" and "Alto Muglo" as place names or street names.  So I asked the Facebook Italian Genealogy group about the words on the image and the experts said the words were "detto luogo," which means "this place" in English.  That makes a lot more sense!  
• The names of the bride's mother was not transcribed correctly:  The image clearly says "della Magi Lucia, " but the transcription says "Magistrelli Lucia" instead of "Magi Lucia."

There may be other mistakes that I did not find.  

5)  All in all, this worked out very well.  It helps to have relatively clear handwriting and typed words in the document.

Now I know that the record says that Leone Morandi (age 24 of Limano, a farmer, whose parents were Lorenzo [Morandi] and Domenica Angeli, both of Limano) and Maria Rosa Angeli (age 24 of Limano, a washerwoman, whose parents were Giusfredo [Angeli] and Magi Lucia, both of Limano) were married 15 September 1920 in Bagni di Lucca.  Note that their signatures are at the bottom of the second image.  

Have you tried to transcribe documents in a foreign language using an Artificial Intelligence tool?  I've heard great things about Transkribus, and have tried to use the free version some, but never with success like this.

Rabbit Holes With Randy - 1871 Birth Record for Maria Loreta Cerasoli in Capestrano, Italy on FamilySearch

 After writing Rabbit Hole Genealogy Fun - Death Record of Irene Albina Marano in Capestrano, Italy last week, I decided that I had so much fun doing it that I would make it a weekly event (if I can find the time or remember to go down a rabbit hole).  So welcome to "Rabbit Holes With Randy." 

I spent about two hours on this rabbit hole today, and successfully found the birth record for my grandsons' 2nd great-grandmother, Maria Loreta Cerasoli (1871-1940).  I only had information about her from several online family trees.  Those trees said she was born in Capestrano, L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy in 1871, married in 1895 in Capestrano to Giuseppe "Joseph" DeMilio (1870-1930), migrated to the USA, settled in Iron county, Michigan, and died there, leaving nine children including my grandsons' great grandmother, Clara DeMilio (1911-2012).  

Since Maria was born in 1871, the records for her birth and her marriage are not in the State Archives records posted on the Antenati Portale website - they cover 1809-1865 and 1911-1943.  So Antenati will not have Maria's birth record or marriage record.

I searched for information about Capestrano and L'Aquila state on Wikipedia, Google Maps, the FamilySearch Wiki, and the FamilySearch Catalog today.  

Luckily, the FamilySearch Catalog has the Civil Registers for the years 1866 to 1944 in digital microfilm available to me at home.  The earlier years (1809-1865) are on digital microfilm but I can only view them at a FamilySearch Center.  Here is the Catalog entry for the Capestrano records:

The red sentence near the bottom of the image says that the "Records of Italy, L'Aquila, Civil Registration (State Archive) are available online, click here."  When I clicked "here" I got the indexed database for the collection, but it is missing 1866 to 1910.  

In addition, this database had no entries from Capestrano for any year.  

So back to the "rest of the page" in the Catalog:

Note that the data for 1809 to 1865 have the camera with the key over it, meaning I cannot see those records at home and need to go to the FamilySearch Library to access them.  

At the bottom of the page are the later years:

The records from 1866 to 1910 are available to me at home.  The 1871 birth data is in the "Nati, publicazioni, matrimoni, morti 1866-1887" collection on Film number 2013834, Items 2-6.

The digital microfilm for this film has 3,100 images, and I want Item 2 on this film.

The first Item on the film was for another L'Aquila town, and Item 2 was the birth records. 

Luckily, I discovered that each year of the Birth records had an index in the back of each register, so for 1871 it looks like this:

The second entry from the bottom in the left column lists "Cerasoli Maria Loreta" with number 67 in the 1871 birth register.

I browsed back to image 697 and saw Maria's birth record near the bottom of the left-hand page continuing to the top of the right-hand page (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99WR-KZYW?i=696&cc=2043786&cat=399605):  

I can't read the Italian but I can pick out the child's name, the birth date of 18 August 1871, and the parents names of Carlo Cerasoli (son of Emidio) and Albina Marano (daughter of Giandomenico).

I saved the record to my computer files, and then crafted the source:

Now that I found that FamilySearch has the birth, marriage and death records for 1809 to 1944, I can do more searching here, although Antenati has a search facility for 1809 to 1865 and 1911 to 1943. 

So this was another fun escape into the rabbit hole of genealogy research and I had a lot of fun doing it.  I'm going to demonstrate this process to the CVGS Research Group on Wednesday.

Rabbit Hole Genealogy Fun - Death Record of Irene Albina Marano in Capestrano, Italy

 I had a free hour this morning to have some genealogy fun, and I wondered if FamilySearch had records for my grandsons Italian ancestors.  They are all in the FamilySearch Family Tree, and in my Ancestry Member Tree, and also in several other Ancestry trees.  But I was looking for records of birth/baptism, marriage, and death/burial for sourcing to original records for the persons involved..

When I clicked on my grandsons' 3rd great-grandfather Carlo Giuseppe Cerasoli (1840-????) of Capestrano, L'Aquila, Italy,  profile in the FamilySearch Family Tree, I clicked on the FamilySearch search link to find records for him.  One of those records was the death record for his wife, Irene Albina Marano, in which he was listed as a spouse.  Here is the index record for the death record of Irene Marano:

The source citation provided by FamilySearch is:

This record states that Irene Albina Marano died 14 December 1914 in Capestrano, L'Aquila, Italy at age 76, and her husband was Carlo Cerasoli. It shows that Irene's parents are Giandomenico Marano and Giustina Cerasoli.  

The original image of the record is not available to me at home in the FamilySearch record collections or in digital microfilm, but it is available at the local Family History Center in the Family History Catalog as digital microfilm.

Then I remembered that the Italian Civil Records for this time period are on the Antenati website (https://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/) - could I find it?  On the Antenati site, I searched by her name, Capestrano and 1914 and was rewarded by:

Irene's death record is the first record on this page.  Here is my first attempt at a source citation for the image:

Italian death records are wonderful because they give the husband's name and usually the parents names. The real finds here are Irene's death date and her parent's names - Giandomenico Marano and Giustina Cerasoli.  I also found Carlo Cerasoli's death record in 1911 in Capestrano in another record not listed in the FamilySearch database for some reason.

The death record for Carlo Giuseppe Cerasoli in 1911 says his parents were Emidio Cerasoli and Anna Trolla.  It appears that he married his cousin of some degree (likely a first or second cousin).

I need to have more genealogy fun like this every day!  Sometimes you get the rabbit and sometimes the rabbit gets you - this time, I won.

Dipping Into Denmark Church Records: 1823 Death and Burial Record for Anna Pedersdatter (1750-1823)

 My grandsons have Danish ancestry through their father.  His great-grandparents came from Denmark in 1906 and settled in Chicago.

FamilySearch has a nice list of 28 Denmark record collections, and many of them are indexed and have record images.  I am using the "Denmark Burials, 1640-1917" collection for these records.

Today, I'm looking for the 1823 death and burial record of Anna Pedersdatter in Viborg, Denmark:

Here is the burial record summary image:

So Anna Pedersdatter died 15 August 1823 and was buried 22 August 1823 in Viborg, Denmark, at age 73 years.  Her husband was named as Peder Jensen Hede in the record.

I clicked the link to browse the records, but could not find this particular record in the 392 images.  The document information above says "p290" but there are few page numbers, and image 290 is for 1821 records.  Images 301 and 302 have records for 1823, but there are none for August 1823.

The source citation for this confirmation record is:

I have found no birth or marriage records for Anna Pedersdatter in these church records.

From the information I have Peder Jensen Hede was born about 1753, and married Anna Pedersdatter (1750-1823) before 1797.  Their son, Lauritz Pedersen Hede (1799-1858), married Mette Catherine Poulsdatter (1802-1878) in 1830.  Peder Jensen Hede and Anna Pedersdatter are my grandsons' 5th great-grandparents.

Dipping Into Denmark Church Records: 1841 Death and Burial Record of Peder Jensen Hede (1753-1841)

My grandsons have Danish ancestry through their father.  His great-grandparents came from Denmark in 1906 and settled in Chicago.

FamilySearch has a nice list of 28 Denmark record collections, and many of them are indexed and have record images.  I am using the "Denmark Church Records, 1484-1941" collection for these records.

Today, I'm looking for the 1841 death and burial record of Peder Jensen Hede in Vigsø, Thisted, Denmark:

The confirmation record is the 6th record down the right-hand page.  Here is the record:

The first column is an index number.  The second column is the death date, the third column is the burial date, the 4th column is the person's name, the 5th column is information (probably with a father's name!), and the 6th column is an age.

So Peder Jensen Hede died 6 May 1841 and was buried 14 May 1841, at age 88 years.  I think it says his father's name is Jens Pedersen Hede of Nyetorp.  

The heading on this record in FamilySearch indicates that this is from the Thisted > Hillerslev > Rær church records.  The summary page says Vigsø, Thisted, Denmark.  I don't understand which place name to use now.  Perhaps Vigso is the current place name and Raer, Hillerslev is the former place name, or vice versa.

I have found no birth or marriage records for Peder Jensen Hede in these church records.

From the information I have Peder Jensen Hede was born about 1753, and married Anna Pedersdatter (1750-1823) before 1797.  Their son, Lauritz Pedersen Hede (1799-1858), married Mette Catherine Poulsdatter (1802-1878) in 1830.  Peder Jensen Hede and Anna Pedersdatter are my grandsons' 5th great-grandparents.

I don't have an original source for the parents of Lauritz Pedersen Hede - only  online family tree information, so this may not be his father.  Lauritz's father's first name was Peder, but Vigso is about 100 miles north of Gram, Haderslev where Lauritz settled.  This may be the wrong father of Lauritz Pedersen Hede.

Dipping Into Denmark Church Records: 1892 Confirmation of Johanne Magrethe Stenger in Skærbæk, Tønder, Denmark

My grandsons have Danish ancestry through their father.  His great-grandparents came from Denmark in 1906 and settled in Chicago.

FamilySearch has a nice list of 28 Denmark record collections, and many of them are indexed and have record images.  I am using the "Denmark Church Records, 1484-1941" collection for these records.

Today, I'm looking for the birth, baptism or confirmation record of Johanne Margrethe Stenger in Skærbæk, Tønder, Denmark:

The confirmation record is the first record on the page.  Here is the record:

The confirmation number is the first column, the name of the confirmant is the 2nd column, the names of the parents are in the 3rd column, the dates of birth and baptism are in the 4th column.Johanne Magrethe Stenger was confirmed as #14 in 1892 in Skærbæk, Tønder, Denmark.  She was the daughter of Heinrich Christian Carl Stenger and Ane Cathrine Adler.  Johanne's birth date was 18 September 1877 and her baptism date was 4 November 1877.

I found no birth or baptism record for Johanne Magrethe Stenger in these church records.

Johanne Magrethe Stenger married Hans Lauritzen Hede (1880-1940) in 1904 in Denmark, and they migrated to Chicago, Illinois in about 1906.  They are my grandsons 2nd great-grandparents.

Dipping Into Denmark Church Records: 1830 Marriage of Hans Sørensen and Elske Cathrine Bennetsen

My grandsons have Danish ancestry through their father.  His grandparents came from Denmark in 1906 and settled in Chicago.

FamilySearch has a nice list of 28 Denmark record collections, and many of them are indexed and have record images.  I am using the "Denmark Church Records, 1484-1941" collection for these records.

Today, I'm looking for the marriage record of Hans Sørensen and Elske Cathrine Bennetsen who were married 15 September 1830 in Gram, Haderslev, Denmark.

The birth record is the 2nd record down the page, and numbered #3.  Here is the record:

The name of the bridegroom is in the 2nd column, the name of the bride is in the 3rd to 5th column, the witness names are in the 6th column, the marriage date is in the 7th column, the place in the 8th column, with remarks in the 9th column.  They used the wrong form for these marriages!

Hans Sørensen of Jenning (?)  was age 31, Elske Cathrine Bennetsen of Gram was age 21, and the marriage was in the church at Gram, Haderslev, Denmark on 15 September 1830.

The column headings do not match the listings for Southern Denmark parish register marriages in the FamilySearch Wiki (https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Denmark_Parish_Register_Headings).

The birth record is the 4th record down the page, and numbered #43.  Here is the record:

The name of the bridegroom is in the 2nd column, the name of the bride is the 3rd column, the witness names are in the 4th column, the marriage date is in the 5th column ,and the place in the 6th column, with remarks in the 7th column. 

Lauritz Pedersen Hede of Oster Lindet was age 31, Mette Catharine Roibol of Terp was age 28, and the marriage was in the church at Oster Lindet, Haderslev, Denmark.

Lauritz Pedersen Hede and Mette Catharine Poulsdatter are my grandsons 4th great-grandparents. Other records give Mette's last name as Poulsdatter (daughter of Poul) rather than Roibet (the record above looks like Roiboll to me).  Hede and Roibol may be farm names, but most of the last name entries on this page are patronymic names.
