Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Your Disaster Genealogy Go Bag

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music, please!):

1) Thank you for this topic to Jacqi Stevens for her post today on Your Genealogy Go Bag on her blog A Family Tapestry.

2)  My daughter Lori evacuated her home in the Santa Cruz mountains on Tuesday due to a large fire.  Am I, or are you, prepared to react to a local disaster like a fire, earthquake, hurricane or civil unrest?

3)  That prompted me to worry about "what genealogy/family history items would I take with me if I had 15 minutes to collect them?"

4) Write about it in a blog post on your own blog, in a Facebook post, or as a comment on this blog post.

Here's mine:

*  The computer is old and should be replaced soon.  The printer can be replaced.  Flash drives don't have anything unique on them not on the computer and backup devices.

*  Books and periodicals are fungible and can be replaced if necessary.

*  I have almost all of my paper collection of genealogy and family history digitized, and on my computer hard drive, on my backup external drive, in Google Drive, and in iDrive which backs up my files every night.

*  So I won't take the hardware or the paper stuff, with the exception of the binder with all of the vital record certificates I have.

*  I have a box of all of the family papers from my grandparents and further back, which includes Bible pages, scrapbooks, small photo albums, etc.  I will take that.  I will take some time to add to that, and may even get a plastic bin or two to put everything in.

*  I have too many loose photo sets, and many in binders in one of my bookcases, and should try to gather the loose items in one box.  I have incomplete photo albums in my file cabinet that are original photos.  They are digitized, but still precious.  Into the box.

*  I have my grandfather's magnifying glass on my desk and his drafting toolset in my desk.  That could go in the family papers box.

*  We have many large framed family photos on the walls.  Several are unique and I need to save those.

*  The remaining, undigitized, home movies not digitized need to go too  - it's a small box.

*  We have many pieces of my mother's artwork in the living room and I would try to save the small, personalized pieces if not all of them.  Another box I  fear.

*  In addition, there are family records that need to be saved - certificates, registrations, , taxes, credit card info, etc.

I can see that I'm not very prepared for any disaster, especially for one that hits immediately without warning, let alone an hour warning.  Writing it down helps me organize my thoughts, but doesn't get it done.

Our car is relatively small too - so there are choices to make here along with clothes, medications, hygiene, etc.  Thank goodness we don't have pets to worry about.

My friend, Marshall, has come up with a program to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED.  Thanks to Marshall for helping us out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to  https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link).  It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

William S. Tilden edited the book History of the Town of Medfield, Massachusetts, 1650-1886, The family genealogy section of the book provides this summary for John Fisher[1]:
"John Fisher was a blacksmith like most of the family, and settled in the north part of the town near Castle Hill.  An old cellar on the farm of Geo. W. Bruce probably marks the spot.  A grant of twenty rods for building was made to the family in 1701 - evidently in this locality.  He was admitted to full communion in 1710.  He married in 1705 Abigail Smith, who died in 1725.  John died in 1727, a few months before his father.  The estate was settled in 1735."
John Fisher was born 22 December 1677 in Medfield, Massachusetts, the second child and first son of John and Hannah (Adams) Fisher[2].

John Fisher married Abigail Smith on 23 April 1705 in Medfield[3].  She was born 18 December 1686 in Medfield, the daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Clarke) Adams.   John and Abigail (Smith) Fisher had seven children, all born in Medfield and recorded in the town record book:

*  Solomon Fisher (1706-1706).
*  Abigail Fisher (1707-1711)
*  Sarah Fisher (1709-1785)
*  Abigail Fisher (1711-1785), married 1731 John Plimpton (1708-1756).
*  John Fisher (1714-1777), married 1736 Dorcas Adams (1717-1807).
*  Sarah Fisher (1719-1756).
*  Joshua Fisher (1725-????), married 1752) Silence Adams (1724-????).

Abigail (Smith) Fisher died 23 February 1724/5 at age 38, just days after the birth of her son Joshua Fisher.

John Fisher died 14 August 1727 at age 49 in Medfield[4], leaving four children aged 2 to 15 without parents.

There is no burial record available for John Fisher, but he may have been buried in Vine Lake Cemetery in Medfield.

John Fisher's father, John Fisher (1652-1727), died intestate on 15 December 1727 in Medfield, only three months after John Fisher's (1677-1727) death.  His estate file shows that his son John's heirs received a double portion when it was closed in 1728, with administrator Joshua Fisher (son of the elder John) assigned all of the real estate and paying 46 pounds to the heirs of the younger John Fisher, and 23 pounds to the heirs of his three sisters.  When Hannah (Adams) Fisher died in 1746, her children or their heirs received £11-10s per share from their father's estate.

John Fisher (1677-1727) died intestate, and his estate papers are in Case 5512 in the Suffolk County Probate Court estate files[5].  His brother, Josiah Fisher (1692-1781), was named administrator on 16 October 1727, and the Inventory was apprised on 20 October 1727 by Ebenezer Mason, Abraham Harding and George Barbur.  The inventory totaled £517-06s-08d.  The real estate included:

*  House and barn and the homestead -       £158-00-00
*  Meadow 3 Acres, Swamp 15 acres -         £63-00-00
*  Other land and swamp -                            £22-00-00
*  Other buildings and lands -                     £110-00-00

The real estate totaled £353.

On 11 August 1735, the apprisers informed the court that the property "will conveniently make but one settlement according to the best judgment of the subscribers" and recommended that it be settled on the eldest son, John Fisher. The Court ordered the subscribers to apprise the real estate, which was done on 15 September 1735 and it totaled £384.  On 16th September 1735, the eldest son, John Fisher, Josiah Fisher and Samuel Smith posted a bond of £768, and the Court ordered that eldest son John Fisher would receive the real estate, and would pay his three living siblings (Abigail Plimpton, Sarah Fisher and Joshua Fisher) £76-16s each as their share of the estate.
