Treasure Chest Thursday -- 1678 Marriage of John Pray and Sarah Brown in Providence, Rhode Island

 It's time to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings for Treasure Chest Thursday.

The treasure today is the 1678 marriage record of  John Pray and Sarah Brown in Providence, Rhode Island:

The marriage record is the 4th record of the Pray listing:

The transcription of this marriage record is:

"PRAY, John (-1730, 1733) & Sarah Brown (-1733+); 14 Nov 1678; Providence/Smithfield"

The source citation for this record is:

 "New England Marriages Prior to 1700," online database with digital images, AmericanAncestors.org (New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2008, page 600, John Pray and Sarah Brown marriage entry, 14 November 1678.

This record is a Derivative Source, with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the marriage of John Pray and Sarah Brown.  The original record is probably in a Providence town record book that is not extant.

John Pray (1653-1733) was the son of Richard and Mary (--?--) Pray of Providence, Rhode Island.  He married Sarah Brown (1662-b1733), daughter of John and Mary (Holmes) Brown of Providence, on 14 November 1678 in Providence, Rhode Island.

John and Sarah (Brown) Pray are my 7th great-grandparents.  I am descended through their son Richard Pray (1683-1755) who married in about 1723 to Rachel --?-- (a1685-b1755).

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

The New England Historic Genealogical Record sketch for Mehitable Knowles says[1]:
"[KNOWLES] MEHITABLE, b., probably at Eastham, 20 May 1653; d. at Eastham after 1721; m. GEORGE BROWN of Eastham, who in his will, dated 29 June 1721 and proved 3 Aug. 1721, left his property to be divided 'among all my children,' without naming them, although incidentally he mentioned four of them.  Almost two-thirds of the inventory of his estate consisted of a debt due from Joshua Brown.  Three town grants, one to George Brown and two to Joshua Brown, were laid out adjacent to each other.  Joshua Brown had a son Knowles Brown.  These are the reasons for identifying Mehitable Knowles with the wife of George Brown, who was named in his will."
Mehitable was born 20 May 1653, probably in Eastham, the daughter of mariner Richard and Ruth (Bower) Knowles[1].

Mehitable Knowles married George Brown (1652-1721), son of William and Mary (Moorecock) Brown of Eastham,  in about 1674, probably in Eastham, Massachusetts[1-2],  They had four known children, and probably four others:

*  James Brown (1675-????), married 1704 Ruth Snow (1679-????).
*  William Brown (1677-????), married 1699 Susannah Harding (1676-????).
*  George Brown (1679-1735), married 1700 Elizabeth Mulford (1677-1744).
*  Mary Brown (1683-1716), married 1703 Nathaniel Mayo (1667-1716).
*  Mehitable Brown (1684-????), married 1715 John Hallett (1688-????).
*  Samuel Brown (1686-1749), married 1708 Ruth Young (1688-1768).
*  Mercy Brown (1690-1754), married 1711 John Walker (1696-1760).
*  Joshua Brown (1692-????), married 1723 Rebecca Rich (1701-????).

In his will dated 29 June 1721, George Brown of Eastham, Massachusetts bequeathed to his wife[3]:
"Item I Give unto my Loveing wife Mehetable All the Reminder of my whole Estate for her Supporte as long as shee Lives, and after her decease to be Equally Divided among all my sons and Daughters be it more or Less..."
It is not known when Mehitable (Knowles) Brown died, but it was certainly after her husband's will was written.  There are no known death or burial records for Mehitable, and she has no probate records in the Barnstable County probate court records.

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

The book A Few Descendants of William Brown of Eastham, Mass, Cape Cod highlights George Brown and provides useful information[1].  For George, it says:

"(2) George Brown (1—William) the son of William and Mary (Murdock) Brown was born at Plymouth, Mass. 16 January 1651/2. He married Mehitable Knowles, b. May 20, 1653 (Eastham) the daughter of Richard and Ruth (Bower) Knowles and grand daughter of Rev. John and Elizabeth (Willis) Knowles who came from England 1639."

This book lists only the four children that are named in the will of George Brown.

Similar information was published in the Knowles Family of Eastham book[2].

Later research indicates that George's mother was Mary Moorecock, daughter of Henry and Audria (Cork) Moorecock of Kent in England.

George Brown married Mehitable Knowles (1653-after 1721) in about 1674, probably in Eastham, Massachusetts[1-2].  They had four known children from the will, and probably four others:

*  James Brown (1675-????), married 1704 Ruth Snow (1679-????).
*  William Brown (1677-????), married 1699 Susannah Harding (1676-????).
*  George Brown (1679-1735), married 1700 Elizabeth Mulford (1677-1744).
*  Mary Brown (1683-1716), married 1703 Nathaniel Mayo (1667-1716).
*  Mehitable Brown (1684-????), married 1715 John Hallett (1688-????).
*  Samuel Brown (1686-1749), married 1708 Ruth Young (1688-1768).
*  Mercy Brown (1690-1754), married 1711 John Walker (1696-1760).
*  Joshua Brown (1692-????), married 1723 Rebecca Rich (1701-????).

William Brown wrote his will in 1685 which was proved on 31 March 1694 in Barnstable County Probate Court[3].  He bequeathed to his son, George Brown:

"I give my son George Browne my ten acres of upland and ye further side of Silver Spring River and all my marsh on that side of sd river."

George Brown died testate on 3 August 1721 in Eastham at age 70, and was probably buried at Cove Burying Ground in Eastham[4].  Although there is a Find A Grave memorial for him, there is no evidence of a burial for George Brown in Eastham, according to the publications of the Eastham Historical Society.

The will of George Brown was written on 29 June 1721, and proved on 3 August 1721 in Barnstable County Probate Court[5].

Barnstable ss August 3^d 1721 Then George Brown Son and Executor to the will of his father George Brown Late of Eastham now deceased made Oath to the Truth of ye abovewritten Inventory so far as he knew and yt if any thing further of the Estate of ye sd Deceased shall come to his knowlidge that is valuable that he will allso bring it to this Inventory.
                                                                         Coram me John Otis.

Almost one half of the inventory of his estate consisted of a debt due from Joshua Brown. Three town grants, one to George Brown and two to Joshua Brown were laid out adjacent to each other. Joshua Brown had a son Knowles Brown. These are the reasons for identifying Mehitable Knowles with the wife of George Brown, who was named in his will.

The following were named in the will as children of George and Mehitable Knowles Brown: William, James, George, and Mercy.  Other Brown persons in Eastham born in the 1680 to 1720 time frame are probably  children of George and Mehitable (Knowles) Brown, including Mary, Mehitable, Samuel and Joshua Brown.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Sketch of the George and Mehitable (Knowles) Family of Eastham, Mass.

  It's Treasure Chest Tuesday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the entry for Mehitable Knowles in the article "The Knowles Family of Eastham, Mass."in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register:
The Mehitable Knowles sketch is:

The transcription of this record is:

"[KNOWLES]
MEHITABLE, b., probably at Eastham, 20 May 1653; d. at Eastham after 1721; m.

The source citation for this record is:

Charles Thornton Libby, "The Knowles Family of Eastham, Mass.," New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Volume 79, Number 3 (July 1925), pages 286-297.

This is an Authored Work for the sketch of Mehitable Knowles and George Brown.  It is Secondary Information and Direct Evidence of the birth date, place, and the name of Mehitable Knowles, George Brown and her parents and children.  Some of the items mentioned are in the Eastham town records on Family History Library digital microfilm.

Mehitable Knowles (1653-after 1721) was the daughter of Richard and Ruth (Bower) Knowles of Plymouth and Eastham.  She married George Brown (1651-1721) in about 1674 and they had 8 children, including Samuel Brown (1686-1749) who married Ruth Young (1688-1768) in 1708.  George and Mehitable (Knowles) Brown are my 7th great-grandparents.

Surname Saturday -- CORK (England to colonial New England)

It's Surname Saturday, and I'm "counting down" my Ancestral Name List each week.

I am working in the 9th great-grandmothers by Ahnentafel number, and I am up to Ancestor #2259 who is Audrey CORK (1590-1638). [Note: the more recent ancestral families have been covered in earlier posts.]

My ancestral line back through two generations in this CORK family line is:

1. Randall J. Seaver

2. Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983)
3. Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002)

4. Frederick Walton Seaver (1876-1942)
5. Alma Bessie Richmond (1882-1962)

8. Frank Walton Seaver (1852-1922)
9. Hattie Louise Hildreth (1857-1920)

16. Isaac Seaver (1823-1901)
17. Lucretia Townsend Smith (1827-1884)

34.  Alpheus B. Smith (1802-1840)
35.  Elizabeth Horton Dill (1791-1869)

70.  Thomas Dill (1755-1839)
71.  Hannah Horton (1761-1797)

140.  Thomas Dill (1708-1761)
141.  Mehitable Brown (1714-1758)

282.  Samuel Brown (1686-1749)

283.  Ruth Young (1688-1768)

564.  George Brown (1652-1721)
565.  Mehitable Knowles (1653-1721)

1128.  William Brown (1624-1694)
1129.  Mary Moorecock (1625-1694)
2258. Henry Moorecock, born about 1588 in Smarden, Kent, England; died before 1625 in Kent,
England. He married 04 June 1616 in St. Margaret's, Canterbury, Kent, England. 2259. Audrey Cork, born about 1590 in Egerton, Kent, England; died before December 1638 in
Plymouth, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. Children of Henry Moorecock and Audrey Cork are:
*  Bennet Moorecock (1619-????).
*  Nicholas Moorecock (1621-????).
*  Mary Moorecock (1625-1694), married 1649 William Brown (1624-1694).

I have no other information on the Moorecock or Cork families.  Some derivative sources have Mary's maiden name as Murdock.

However, in The Great Migration, Audrey (Cork) Moorecock, widow of Henry Moorecock, is named as the first wife of Thomas Whitton (1599-1664).  They married in 1625 in Kent, and Thomas died in Plymouth.  The sketch for Thomas Whitton names the children of Henry and Audrey (Cork) Moorecock.

Amanuensis Monday - 1749 Guardianship of Isaac Brown and John Brown in Eastham, Massachusetts

This week's document for Amanuensis Monday is the 1749 guardianship record in the probate court records for Isaac and John Brown, sons of Samuel Brown (1686-1749), late of Eastham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts:

[Volume 7, pages 138-139]

                                         Silvanus Bourn

The record for John Brown, on pages 139-140,  is almost identical and won't be reproduced here.

The source citation for this record is:

Barnstable county, Massachusetts, Probate Records, 1686-1894, digital images, FamilySearch  (https://familysearch.org : accessed 10 December 2017), "Probate Records, Vol. 6-7, 1740-1774," pages 137-139 (images 379-380 of 591), guardianship of Isaac Brown, 1749.

Isaac Brown and John Brown were minor children (estimated to be ages 19 and 17) at the time of the death of their father, Samuel Brown (1686-1749) of Eastham, Massachusetts.  In these documents, their mother, Ruth (Young) Brown, was appointed to be their guardian until they reached the age of 21.

I transcribed the following for Samuel Brown's probate records:

When I wrote the biography of Ruth (Young) Brown last Friday in 52 Ancestors - Week 204: #283 Ruth (Young) Brown (1688-1768) of Eastham, Massachusetts, I realized that I had not found any probate records for her, so I checked the Probate Index for her and found no listings, but when I checked the Probate Index for Samuel Brown, the Guardianship records were included.

Samuel and Ruth (Young) Brown are my 6th great-grandparents, through their daughter Mehitable Brown who married Thomas Dill in 1733.

"A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another."
