===========================================

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to  https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

My friend, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED.  Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link).  It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Two Degrees of Separation

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music):

1)  Using your ancestral lines, how far back in time can you go with two degrees of separation?  That means "you knew an ancestor, who knew another ancestor."  When was that second ancestor born?

2)  Tell us about it in a blog post of your own, in a comment to this blog post, in a status line on Facebook.

Here are several of mine:

1)  My Seaver/Richmond line:   Me (born 1943 in San Diego) - I met my paternal grandmother once in 1959.  My paternal grandmother Alma Bessie (Richmond) Seaver (1882-1962, born in Connecticut, daughter of Thomas Richmond (1848-1917) born in England)  knew her grandfather,

James Richmond (1821-1912, born in England, died in Connecticut).  She also knew her husband's grandfather, Isaac Seaver (1823-1901).

 2)  My Carringer/Spangler/King line:  Me (born 1943 in San Diego) - my maternal great grandfather, Henry Austin Carringer held me when I was a baby.  Henry Austin Carringer (1853-1946, born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, died in San Diego), son of David Jackson Carringer (1828-1902, born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, died in San Diego) and Rebecca Spangler (1832-1901, born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, died in San Diego),  knew his paternal grandfather Henry Carringer (1800-1879, born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, died in Iowa) well.  He also knew his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth (King) Spangler (1796-1863, died in Mercer County, Pennsylvania).

3)  My Carringer/Auble/Kemp/Sovereen line:  Me (born 1943 in San Diego) knew my great-grandmother, Georgianna (Kemp) Auble (1868-1952).  Georgianna Kemp (1868-1952, born in Norfolk County, Ontario, died in San Diego), knew her maternal grandfather, Frederick Sovereen(1786-1875, died in Norfolk County, Ontario).

4)  My Carringer/Smith/Vaux/Underhill line:  Me (born 1943 in San Diego) - my great-grandmother, Della (Smith) Carringer (1862-1944, born in Wisconsin, died in San Diego) held me (I don't remember it, of course!).  Della Smith, daughter of Abigail Vaux (1844-1931, born in Erie County, New York, died in San Diego), granddaughter of Mary Ann (Underhill) Vaux (1815-1882, born in Erie County, New York, died in Kansas) may have met her great-grandfather, Amos Underhill (1772-1865, born in New Hampshire, died in Erie county, New York), but I doubt it!

So I can connect, with two degrees of separation, back to a 4th great-grandfather born in 1772 (but that man likely did not "meet" his great-grandchild).  For the requirement that they actually met, I can get back to a 4th great-grandfather born in 1786.  233 years ago, or 157 years before my birth.

New Scottish Records Available To Search this Findmypast Friday, 25 January 2019

I received this information from Findmypast today:

============================================

New Scottish Records Available To Search this Findmypast Friday

Celebrate Burns Night 2019 by uncovering your Scottish roots with a whole host of new Scottish records:

Scotland, Jacobite Rebellions 1715 and 1745

Discover more about the Jacobites and the Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745. Findmypast has digitised this expansive collection of records from The National Archives which includes lists of prisoners and those banished or pardoned along with correspondence, commission records, and briefs evidence. The rebellions had the aim of returning James II of England and VII of Scotland, the last Catholic British monarch, and later his descendants of the House of Stuart, to the throne of Great Britain after they had been deposed by Parliament during the 1688 Revolution.
Each results will include both a transcript and scanned colour image of the original document. The collection comprises of 193 pieces from 9 National Archives series so the amount of information listed will vary depending on the type and nature of the documents. Predominately covering the years 1701-1719 and 1740-1767, there are almost 76,000 in this collection of records from a significant time in Scotland's history.

Scotland, Glasgow Anderson's College Anatomy Students 1860-1874

Did any of your ancestors study at the Anderson College of Medicine, Glasgow? Discover details of their class dates. Anderson College was founded in 1796 following the will of John Anderson, Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow from 1757. Initially known as Anderson's Institution, it changed its name to Anderson's University in 1828 and finally to Anderson's College in 1877. The Institution's medical school was founded in 1800 when Dr John Burns began lectures on anatomy and surgery. The medical school of Anderson's College became a separate and distinct institution known as Anderson's College Medical School in 1887.
The records consist of class rolls of those who studied under Professor George Buchanan. Each record includes a transcript and original image of the class roll that will list the names of students and the day they attended class.

Scotland, Glasgow Smallpox Vaccination Registers 1801-1854

Do you have ancestors from Glasgow? Explore these smallpox vaccination registers to find out when they received their inoculation to help fight the smallpox disease. Smallpox was caused by the variola virus, there are two types of the virus. The more deadly form of the disease is the variola major which killed about 30% of people who were infected. The smallpox vaccine, introduced by Edward Jenner in 1796, was the first successful vaccine to be developed.
The collection consists of ten volumes of registers recording the inoculation program that was carried out in Glasgow between 1801 and 1854. Each result will include a transcript of the original register entry that lists the name of the individual being inoculated, the date of their inoculation, their birth year, address, the name of their parent or guardian, the name of the inoculator and the results of the inoculation.

Scotland, Glasgow & Lanarkshire Death & Burial Index 1642-1855

Over 283,000 additional records spanning the years 1636 to 2001 have been added to the Scotland, Glasgow & Lanarkshire Death & Burial Index 1642-1855. This index of deaths and burials consists of transcripts of original documents covering the years of 1642 to 1855. From the index, you may learn your ancestors' birth year, death and burial dates, age at death, burial place, and mortcloth price.
These new additions have been provided by the Glasgow and West of Scotland Family History Society.

Scotland Roman Catholic Parish Registers

Over 223,000 new baptisms, marriages and burials have been added to our collections of Scotland Roman Catholic Parish Registers. The New additions cover 471 parishes across the country and span the years 1800 to 1966. Each result will include both a transcript and image of the original register entry.
Our collection of Scotland Roman Catholic Sacramental registers covers all eight Scottish dioceses: Aberdeen, Argyll & The Isles, Dunkeld, Galloway, Glasgow, Motherwell, St Andrews & Edinburgh, and Paisley, and date back to the early 17th century. The records form part of our wider Catholic Heritage Archive, a ground-breaking project that aims to digitise the historic records of the Catholic Church in Britain, Ireland and North America, and additional new records will be added to these collections later in the year.

Scotland Roman Catholic Congregational Records

Over 55,000 new records have been added to the collection. Congregational records can help you get a better understanding of your ancestors' relationship with the church and include registers of confirmations and communion recipients, as well as parish lists, seat rentals, lists of people who converted to Catholicism and more.
Congregational registers incorporate sacramental records other than those pertaining to baptisms, marriages, and burials, such as communicants (those who received Holy Communion), confirmations (those who received Holy Confirmation), sick calls (those who received the Anointing of the Sick), and first confessions (those who received Holy Reconciliation). You will also find records of people who converted to Catholicism. In many parishes, you could rent seats in the chapel for your family. The seat rental records will list the individual names, the cost of the rental, and the location of the seat. Another register type you will discover is status animarum, Latin for 'status of the souls'. These records noted the names of all the Catholics in the area. Many include the names of head of households and the individual's residence.

British & Irish Newspaper Update

This week we have added 140,106 new pages to The Archive, meaning in total we are just shy of 30 million pages available to search, with a current total of 29,905,890 pages.
We have added one brand new title, the Sunday World (Dublin), which is full of amusing agony aunt anecdotes, and updated five of our existing titles. Updated titles include the Carlisle Journal, the Perthshire Advertiser and the Manchester Evening News, as well as two of our Irish titles, the Drogheda Argus & Leinster Journal and the New Ross Standard.

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

Anna Catharina Unruh was born 26 November 1709, and baptized 1 December 1709 in the church at Edenkoben in Rheinland-Pfalz[1].  She was the daughter of Hanss Georg Unruh and his wife, Appollonia Schweizer, after whom her eldest son named a daughter.

In about 1727, Anna Catherina married Jacob Wilhelm, probably in Edenkoben, Rheinland-Pfalz[2].

Jacob and Catherina had at least two children baptized in the Evangelisch church at Niederhochstadt in Rhineland-Pfalz[2].

The Wilhelm family migrated from Rhineland-Pfalz to America in April 1734, probably sailing down the Rhine River to Rotterdam[2].  They left Rotterdam on the ship St. Andrew with John Stedman, Master.  They stopped in Plymouth on the way to Philadelphia.  The ship landed there on 12 September 1734 with a total of 263 persons.  There were 89 males above age 16, 41 males under 16, and 123 women and female children aboard the ship.
The family settled first in Berks County, Pennsylvania, where the births of sons Philip Jacob (1738) and Johann Adam (1742) were both recorded at  Little Tulpehocken Church (Christ's Church Evangelical) in what is now Jefferson Township in Berks county[2].

The children of Johann Jacob and Anna Catharina (Unruh) Wilhelm are:

1.  Johann Jacob Wilhelm - baptized 29 March 1728 in Niederhochstadt, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany; married about 1754 to Sophia Catharina Schupp (1730-1799); died 16 November 1784 in Donegal, Pennsylvania.

2. Johann Valentin Wilhelm - baptized 2 December 1731 in Niederhochstadt, Rheinland-Pfalz, Garmany, probably died in Berks County, Pennsylvania.

3.  Maria Catharina  Wilhelm - born about 1736, probably in Berks County; married Henrich Zanck (1711-1801) before 1752 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

4. Philip Jacob Wilhelm - born 10 January 1738, baptized 2 February 1739 in Little Tulpehocken Church (Christ's Church Evangelical) in Berks County; married Elisabetha Haverstick in 1762 in Lancaster; died October 1793 in Lancaster.

5. Maria Barbara Wilhelm - born 7 September 1740, North Codorus, York, Pennsylvania, died before 1789 in York; married Phillip Jacob Konig 1 April 1763 in Lancaster.

6.  Johann Adam Wilhelm - born October 1742, baptized 28 November 1742, Little Tulpehocken Church (Christ's Church Evangelical) in Berks County; married Barbara Konig in about 1770 in York, died 1824 in Lancaster.

At a later date, the Wilhelm family moved to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where they resided on Prince Street in the town of Lancaster during the 1750s and 1760s[2].

It is not known when Anna Catharina died, but it was after Jacob wrote his will on 17 August 1771 because she was bequeathed money, personal property and lifetime support in the will.
Jacob Wilhelm's will was proved  in Lancaster County Probate Court on 16 October 1773, and the probate records are in Lancaster Will Book J, pages 350-353[4]

There is a Find A Grave memorial for Anna Catharina Unruh Wilhelm in the First Reformed Church Memorial Garden in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, although there is no death date or stone photograph for Catharina[3]
