Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- The Day Your Maternal Grandmother Was Born

It's Saturday Night -

Time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:

1) What happened in the world on the day your maternal grandmother was born?  Tell us the date, the place, and find a newspaper page for that date, ideally from the place she was born.  What are some of the headlines?  What was the weather?

2) Tell us in your own blog post, or in comments to this post, or in comments on Facebook.  As always, please leave a link to your work in Comments.

Here is mine:

My maternal grandmother was Emily Kemp Auble (1899-1977).  She was born on Saturday, 19 August 1899 in Chicago, Illinois, to Charles and Georgianna (Kemp) Auble, and was an only child.

The Chicago Tribune front page for 19 August 1899 has this on the top of the front page:

Further down the page is a list of highlighted articles:

The major front page articles are:

*  Dreyfus Party Grows Uneasy [France politics]
*  Jiminez is Under Arrest [Dominican Republic]
*  Envoys in Mexico City [Spanish-American War?]
*  Shamrock in New York Harbor [Yacht racing]

The major sports articles are:

*  "Kid" McCoy is Knocked Out [Boxing]
*  Chicago Splits Even With Baltimore [Baseball, with a fan riot!]
*  Killing With Hagedon [Horse-racing]
*  McCawley Wins Ravenoaks Cup [Golf]

The weather was expected to be fair and continued warm.

The most intriguing story is on page 2, "Closing In On Assassin."  This is from Rennes, Frances, and concerns the killer of M. Labori in the Dreyfus Affair.  Another man, a vagrant, confessed to the crime, but is thought to be insane.

In other news on page 2, a safe-cracker in Kansas, Harry Howard, was arrested in Chicago.  There are no photos of scantily clad females in this newspaper of 12 pages, densely packed with small type.

I took the opportunity to see if the birth of my grandmother was announced in this newspaper in all of 1899, and it was not.  I don't have a birth certificate for her.

Disclosure:  I have a complimentary all-access subscription from Ancestry.com, for which I am thankful.  Ancestry.com has provided material considerations for travel expenses to meetings, and has hosted events and meals that I have attended in Salt Lake City, in past years.

My friend, Marshall, has come up with a program to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED.  Thanks to Marshall for helping us out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to  https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link).  It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

 "Miletiah Clarke" was born 4 August 1674 in Medfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of Ephraim and Mary (Bullen) Clarke[5-6].

Her father, Ephraim Clark, died in May 1694, but his estate was not administered until 1703 and settled in 1707.  She was identified as Meletiah, wife of Timothy Hammond, and was to receive her share of 3 pounds, 2 shillings, 8 pence from the estate. as her share[4].

"Melatiah Clark" married Timothy Hamant (1667-1718) on 19 January 1695/6 in Boston, Massachusetts[1.6-7].  He was the son of Francis and Sarah (--?--) Hamant of Medfield. Timothy and Melatiah (Clark) Hamant had five children, all recorded in Medfield:

*  Timothy Hamant (1699-1744), married 1727 Hephzibah Clark (1699-1791).
*  Samuel Hamant (1701-1755), married 1728 Hannah Partridge (1702-1780).
*  Melatiah Hamant (1704-1751), married 1728 Michael Metcalf (1706-1771).
*  Mehitable Hamant (1706-1727).
*  Abiel Hamant (1708-1783), married 1733 Joseph Smith (1709-1760).

Timothy Hamant died in Arrowsic, Maine in 1718.  There is no known probate record for Timothy Hamant in Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

Melatiah and her children probably resided in the Medfield house until Melatiah married again.

She married, secondly, William Partridge (1670-1750) in 1726, probably in Medfield[1].  They had no children.

"Miletiah Partridge" died 23 November 1747 in Medfield at age 73[6-7].  The death record indicates she was the wife of William.

There is no probate record for her, and there is no burial record available for her.  There is, however, a Find A Grave memorial for her which provides her birth and death date[6].

NOTE:  In 2014, Amy Johnson Crow suggested a weekly blog theme of "52 Ancestors" in her blog post  52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks on the No Story Too Small blog.  I have extended this theme in 2020 for a seventh year to 364 Ancestors in 364 Weeks.  The list of 52 Ancestors biographies from my great-grandparents to the 7th great-grandparents (in work) is in   https://www.geneamusings.com/p/ancestor-biographies.html.
