Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Linda Stufflebean's Updated "December Meme"

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Come on, everybody, join in and accept the mission and execute it with precision. Here's your chance to sit on Genea-Santa's lap (virtually) and tell him about your 2023 answers to Linda's 20 questions:

A)  Linda Stufflebean sent in an update to her "December Meme" from last year.  Copy them to your own post and write about them.

B) Tell us about them in your own blog post, in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook Status  post.  Please leave a link on this post if you write your own post.

Here are the 20 Questions:

1.  What is one genea-accomplishment in 2023 of which you are proud?
2.  Which (realistic) genea-gift would you most appreciate this year?
3.  What item on your not-so-realistic wish list for Santa would you most appreciate this year
4.  Have you written any genea-books (with mostly text) to give as holiday gifts?
5.  Have you created any photo family history books to give as holiday gifts?
6.  What is your favorite holiday main course food?
7.   What is your favorite holiday dessert?
8.  Which food do you eat too much during the holidays?
9.  Share a favorite holiday memory.
10.  Have you continued any ethnic food or cultural activities that have been passed down through the family?

11.  Do you prefer warm sunshine or snow on Christmas Day?
12.  Did you break through any brick walls in 2023?
13.  Do you have a 2023 genea-goal which could have been accomplished, but over which you’ve procrastinated or from which you’ve been distracted?
14.  Have you ever gone holiday caroling?
15.  Do you have any favorite holiday decorations?
16.  Who is the singer you most enjoy listening to during the holiday season?
17.  Have there been any Christmas Day calamities that you remember?
18.  If Santa invited you to hitch a ride in his sleigh, where would you like him to drop you off?
19.  If you had to choose right this minute – which ancestor would you most like to meet? Choose an ancestor about whom you’ve researched in 2023.
20.  Share one of your 2024 genealogy goals.

Here's mine:

1. What is one genea-accomplishment in 2023 of which you are proud?  I added more than 48 weeks of Amanuensis Monday (record transcriptions) and 52 Ancestors (ancestor/elative sketches) blog posts this year.

2.  Which (realistic) genea-gift would you most appreciate this year?  Any one of the research requests I posted in my Genea-Santa letter.

3.  What item on your not-so-realistic wish list for Santa would you most appreciate this year? The "Genea-AI ("Magic Genie AI")" with Artificial Intelligence that can work 24 hours a day on writing my blog posts and getting my genea-piles organized - that is so boring and there is so much to do ... but it wouldn't have to sleep or eat, visit Angel Linda at the care facility, or even spend time with her (I promise!).  "Magic Genie AI" could also add Ancestry Record Hints and MyHeritage Record Matches to my RootsMagic database without having me having to type names, dates, places, notes, sources, etc. I'm sure that we can train "Magic Genie AI" to write quality source citations.

4.  Have you written any genea-books (with mostly text) to give as holiday gifts?  I've written about 40 stories for my StoryWorth book but have not published it or sent it to the kids/grandchildren yet.

5.  Have you created any photo family history books to give as holiday gifts?  Not a book.  I did create a 200 photo slide show of our married life for our 50th wedding anniversary celebration in October 2023.  A goal is to narrate it for a YouTube video I can save to my Forever account.

6.  What is your favorite holiday main course food?  I do like turkey if it's moist, and sweet potatoes.

7.  What is your favorite holiday dessert?  Pumpkin pie for some reason.

8.  Which food do you eat too much during the holidays?  Cookies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9.  Share a favorite holiday memory.  Spending Christmas Eve at my grandparents house because they had a chimney, and singing carols at bedtime with my grandmother.

10.  Have you continued any ethnic food or cultural activities that have been passed down through the family?  We didn't have any ethnic food.  Cultural activities?  A Christmas tree, but I won't put it up this year.

11.  Do you prefer warm sunshine or snow on Christmas Day?  It may be sunny, it may rain a bit, it may be windy.  It won't snow.  It will be what it will be.  I would prefer that it not rain so I can drive safely wherever I'm headed.

12.  Did you break through any brick walls in 2023?  Not really.  I've been adding 5th and 6th great-grandparents to the Wiltshire families based on newly available information.

13.  Do you have a 2023 genea-goal which could have been accomplished, but over which you’ve procrastinated or from which you’ve been distracted?  Of course!  I hoped to get the StoryWorth book published to use as Christmas gifts.

14.  Have you ever gone holiday caroling?  Yes.  In the 1980s, our church couples group would go caroling around the church neighborhood.  It was fun.

15.  Do you have any favorite holiday decorations?  Not any more.  We used to put lights on the house when I was younger and could climb a ladder.

16.  Who is the singer you most enjoy listening to during the holiday season?  I really enjoy a mix of songs - I played a YouTube video for hours last week with the top 50 Christmas songs.  To pick one singer - Mariah Carey.

17.  Have there been any Christmas Day calamities that you remember?  Not really.  Thank goodness!

18.  If Santa invited you to hitch a ride in his sleigh, where would you like him to drop you off?  To Huntington Beach and to Brookdale to see my daughters and their families open their gifts.  They could bring me home.  If it's time travel, to 1930 Leominster, Mass. to see my father's family celebrate Christmas.

19.  If you had to choose right this minute – which ancestors would you most like to meet? Choose an ancestor about whom you’ve researched in 2023.  John Richman (1789-1867) and Ann (Marshman) Richman (1784-1856) in Hilperton, Wiltshire, in the 1850 time frame.   I would love to experience Victorian England for a short time and meet my 3rd great-grandparents!!

20.  Share one of your 2024 genealogy goals.  To edit and publish my StoryWorth book, and start a second StoryWorth book with short ancestor biographies.

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

52 Relatives -- Benjamin Seaver (1854-1894) of Medfield and Worcester, Massachusetts and Orlando, Florida

I have posted over 500 genealogical sketches of  my ancestors back through the 7th great-grandparents - see the list in 52 Ancestors Biographies.

I am starting a new weekly series called "52 Relatives" to document the lives of siblings of my ancestors with relatively short sketches with events and source citations.  They deserve a sketch also - they were part of the lives of my ancestors.  I will post the sketches on my Ancestry Member Tree and in the FamilySearch Family Tree.

====================================

Benjamin Seaver (1854-1894) was born on 13 Apr 1854 in Medfield, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, the second son of Isaac and Lucretia Townsend (Smith) Seaver[1].  He grew up in Leominster, Worcester County, Massachusetts with his parents, brother Frank Walton Seaver, and two sisters, Elizabeth Lucinda Seaver and Ellen Maria Seaver.

In the 1880 US census, B. Seaver (age 26, born MA, makes bricks, father and mother born MA) resided in Precinct 3, Orange County, Florida in the home of D.B. Ventres[2].

Benjamin Seaver and Ella Eliza Spring were married on 14 Mar 1885 in Orange, Florida, United States.   Ella Eliza Spring was born in Oct 1860 in Massachusetts, United States.   Benjamin Seaver and Ella Eliza Spring had the following child:

i Edith Jane Seaver, born 10 May 1887, Denver, Putnam County, Florida; married (1) Arlie Bloxham Russell, 30 Jun 1907, Orange County , Florida; married (2) Frank Shannon Taylor, 24 Sep 1931, Orange County, Florida; died Jan 1962, Orange County, Florida, United States.

Benjamin died on 9 Jul 1894 at the age of 40 in Worcester, Worcester, Massachusetts, United States[3].  He was white, male, married, age 40 years, 2 months and 20 days old, cause of death was epilepsy, occupation was a brickmaker, born in Medfield, son of Isaac and L.T. (Smith) Seaver. He was buried after 9 Jul 1894 at Evergreen Cemetery in Leominster, Worcester County, Massachusetts, with his parents and two sisters[4].

Ella died on 1 Aug 1933 at the age of 72 in Kissimmee, Osceola County, Florida[4].  She was buried after 1 Aug 1933 at Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando, Orange County, Florida[5]

Findmypast Friday: Kent Parish Registers, More 1939 Register Entries, and More Newspapers

I received this information from Findmypast today:

==========================================

This Findmypast Friday, there are over 200,000 new additions for you to discover.

We've released over 20,000 more Kent parish records this Findmypast Friday and opened almost 200,000 additional 1939 Register records from across England and Wales. Plus, a brand new newspaper title has arrived on the site.

Kent parish records

Do you have ancestors from the Garden of England? We've added over 20,000 Kent parish records from Canterbury Cathedral this week. These additions, spanning over 200 years, may help you spot a familiar name or two in the three updated Kent parish sets.

Baptisms

This week's biggest parish addition comes to our Kent Baptisms. We've added 12,245 new records, dating from 1842 to 1934.

Marriages and Banns

We've also added over 8,000 new marriage and banns records for Kent this week, perfect for tracing the union of two branches in your family tree. These latest additions span from 1852 to 1939.

Burials

Finally, we've released over 500 Canterbury Cathedral burial transcriptions and images covering 1955-1967. Burial records often contain essential information on your ancestors' lives including age, residence and occupation.

1939 Register

As the official online home of the 1939 Register, Findmypast is the place to go for the most complete set of records from this important collection. We've just opened a further 187,771 previously-redacted records making it easier than ever for you to find your relatives on the eve of war.

Taken in September 1939, the Register provides a fascinating snapshot of a nation on the brink of war. It's also extremely useful for your family research, providing details like full date of birth, address and occupation for every person that was recorded.

Historical newspapers

We've added a brand new newspaper this week. Toby - the 'watchdog of East London' - gives an eye-opening insight into London's police force in the late 19th century. Our coverage for this paper currently runs from 1886 to 1889.

Alongside a brand new title, we've also updated eight others with additional pages, including:
  • Aberdeen Press and Journal from 1753-1757, 1768-1772, 1783-1797 and 1885
  • Atherstone News and Herald from 1993-1995 and 1999
  • Crowthorne Times from 1984-1986
  • Dundee Evening Telegraph from 1986, 1988, 1991
  • Gloucestershire Echo from 1993
  • Lennox Herald from 1998
  • Londonderry Sentinel from 1960 and 1963-1965
  • Sutton & Epsom Advertiser from 1929-1931, 1933-1942, 1945-1953, 1955-1958 and 1960
Visit our newspaper archives and filter by title and year to focus on any of the newly-published pages.

With releases every week, new records and papers come thick and fast at Findmypast. Take a look at what you may have missed in last week's tranche.

Ancestry.com Introduces ProTools for an Additional Fee

Crista Cowan of Ancestry.com posted this announcement on Facebook yesterday:

"Ancestry customers asked and a half dozen new features have now been delivered!

"Login to your Ancestry account and click on TREES to see a link for the new "tree checker" and "charts and reports." New Ancestry ProTools also include advance filters that allow you to search your tree by location (or any other combination of facts) and a MAP view.

"Follow me on Instagram (Instagram.com/CristaCowan) where I will be doing demos of each of the new features over the next couple of days. (Or just sign up for the new tools yourself and play with them.)

"Let me know what questions you've got!

"FAQ 1: Currently in the U.S. only. "

These new Ancestry ProTools cost an additional $9.99 per month.

UPDATE:  At 7 p.m. PST on 14 December, the price point is $14.99.  There are reports of a $19.99 price point too.  For what it's worth, I would subscribe for $1.99 per month.

At this time, the "Tree Checker" and the "Charts and Reports" are available for those that have an Ancestry subscription and pay the additional fee.  The "Advanced Filters" and "Map Views" are not yet available.

You can see more details of each new feature at https://www.ancestry.com/offers/join?feature=treeChecker, but the images are fuzzy.

I am most interested in the "Charts and Reports" feature:

The "Charts and Reports" feature can provide an Ahnentafel, Descendants, Registry and Family Group Sheet reports, presumably for a specific person in your Ancestry Member Tree.

Crista Cowan will be highlighting each new feature in a series of videos on Instagram   (Instagram.com/CristaCowan) and probably on the Ancestry.com Facebook page.

Connie Knox highlighted these new features on her YouTube channel - see Ancestry New Tools & Updates for December 2023.  Watch Connie's exploration of the "Tree Checker" and "Charts and Reports."

Aimee Cross also highlighted these new features on her YouTube channel - see New Features @ Ancestry but it'll COST YOU (Dec. 2023).

Of course, genealogists and family historians have had much more than the current Ancestry "Charts and Reports" capability since the 1990s with desktop genealogy software like Family Tree Maker, Legacy Family Tree, RootsMagic, and other one-time cost software programs.

Disclosure: I receive a complimentary all-access subscription from Ancestry.com, for which I am thankful. Ancestry.com has provided material considerations for travel expenses to meetings, and has hosted events and meals that I have attended in Salt Lake City, in past years.

Treasure Chest Thursday - 1745 Marriage of Thomas Angel and Elizabeth Hiscock in Lacock, Wiltshire

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - an opportunity to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history research and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1745 marriage entry for Thomas Angel and Betty Hiscock in the Lacock, Wiltshire parish records:

The marriage entry is the 5th entry  in the list for "1745:"

The transcription of this record is::

"[1745] July 9.  Thomas Angel & Elizabeth Hiscock, Both of this Parish"

The source citation for this record is:

"Wiltshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812," indexed database with record  images, Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com), Lacock > Parish Registers > 1717-1780, image 116 of 172, Marriages, 1745, Thomas Angel and Elizabeth Hiscock marriage entry, 9 July 1745. Original data: Wiltshire Church of England Parish Registers, Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, Chippenham, Wiltshire, England.

This is an entry in the Lacock, Wiltshire parish register.  It is an Original Source with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the marriage of Thomas Angel of Lacock and Elizabeth Hiscock of Lacock, Wiltshire.

Thomas Angel (1723-1770) was christened 12 April 1723 in Lacock, the son of Jacob and Betty (Brinkworth) Angel.  Elizabeth Hiscock (1727-1758) was christened 11 March 1727 in Lacock, the daughter of John and Grace (Braddin) Hiscock.

Thomas and Elizabeth (Hiscock) Angel are my 5th great-grandparents; they had at least 6 children, including my 4th great-grandmother Anne Angel (1749-1795) who married John Marshman (1747-????) in 1767 in Lacock, Wiltshire.
