Day 8 on the Crown Princess - In Port at Los Angeles, Going Home!

Linda and I are on the Crown Princess cruise ship, leaving Los Angeles on 29 November, stopping at Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas, and returning to Los Angeles on Saturday, 6 December.  This is a genealogy cruise, sponsored by Heritage Books, and organized by Craig Scott.

We arrived in Los Angeles today at 7 a.m., and disembarked later in the morning.  We were picked up by our daughter, went to Huntington Beach to see our grandchildren, and will head home tonight.

I do not have my laptop computer with me on this cruise, and refuse to pay the high fee for Internet access, so I will post summaries and photographs after we return.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 49: #56, John Auble (1780-1831)

Amy Johnson Crow suggested a weekly blog theme of "52 Ancestors" in her blog post  Challenge: 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks on the No Story Too Small blog.  Here is my ancestor biography for week #49:

John Auble is #56 on my Ahnentafel list, my third great-grandfather.  He married in 1804  to #57 Anna Row (1787-1860).

I am descended through:

*  their son,
#28, David Auble (1817-1894), who married #29 Sarah Knapp (1818-1????) in 1844.
*  their son, #14 Charles Auble (1849-1916) who married #15 Georgianna Kemp (1868-1952) in 1898.
*  their daughter, #7 Emily Kemp Auble (1899-1977) married, #6 Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976)in 1918.
* their daughter, #3 Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002), who married Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983) in 1942.
*  their son, #1 Randall J. Seaver (1943-....)

 =====================================================

1)  PERSON (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

*  Name:                  John Auble[1]
*  Sex:                     Male

*  Alternate Name:  Johannes Abel[2]
*  Alternate Name:  John Able[4]
*  Alternate Name:  John Abel[5]

*  Father:                 Johannes Able (1758-1818)
*  Mother:               Sophia Trimmer (1747-1811)

2)  INDIVIDUAL EVENTS (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

*  Birth:                   11 March 1780, New Germantown, Hunterdon, New Jersey, United States[2]
*  Baptism:              23 June 1780 (age 0), New Germantown, Hunterdon, New Jersey, United States[2]
*  Census:                1 June 1830 (age 50), Green, Sussex, New Jersey, United States[1]
*  Death:                  before 1 March 1831 (before age 50), Byram, Sussex, New Jersey, United States[3]
*  Inventory:           1 March 1831 (age 50), inventory taken; Newton, Sussex, New Jersey, United States[4]

3)  SHARED EVENTS (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

*  Spouse 1:            Anna Row (1787-1860)
*  Marriage 1:         15 July 1804 (age 24), New Germantown, Hunterdon, New Jersey, United States[5]
*  Child 1:               Elizabeth Auble (1814-1899)
*  Child 2:               David Auble (1817-1894)
*  Child 3:               William Auble (1820-1844)
*  Child 4:               Hampton Auble (1827-1901)
*  Child 5:               Robert Auble (1830-1920)

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

The entry in the birth and baptism book of the Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick, New Jersey says that Johannes Abel was born 11 March 1780 to Johannes and his wife Sophia Abel, and was baptized 25 June 1780.  The witnesses were the parents.[2]

The entry in the Marriages recorded at the Zion Lutheran Church in Oldwick, N.J. says:[5]

"John Abel and Anna Rouw, July 15 [1804]"

John and Anna (Row) Abel/Auble had at least five children between 1804 and 1830.

There are no  New Jersey census records available before 1830.  In the 1830 US census for New Jersey, a John Auble household was in Green, Sussex County, New Jersey.[1] The household included:

*   two males under age 5,
*  two males age 5-10,
*  one male age 10-15,
*  one male age 50 to 60,
*  one female age 5-10,
*  one female age 15-20,
*  one female age 40-50.

A John Auble died about 1831, probably in Byram, Sussex, New Jersey, and an inventory for a John Auble, taken 1 March 1831, was located in the Sussex, New Jersey, County Probate Records[4].   This is probably the John Auble who married Anna Row.

There is a John Auble household in Newton, Sussex, NJ in the 1840 US census.  The household included:

*  three males under age 15,
*  one male age 30-40,
*  five females under age 15
*  a female aged 30 to 40.

This John Auble may be the son of John Auble.  The second John Auble (age 47) is also shown in the 1850 census in Green, Sussex, NJ with a large family.  If the age is correct, then his birth would pre-date Johannes Able's marriage to Anna Row in 1804.

It is possible that this first Johannes/John Abel/Able/Auble was married more than once.  It is also possible that the second John Auble was born out of wedlock.

The burial location for John Auble is not known.

Review: Derry - Londonderry: Gateway to a New World

Do you have family that migrated from Northern Ireland to North America?  This small book discusses why, when and how travelers from Northern Ireland traveled to Canada and the United States between the late 17th to the early 20th centuries.

Brian Mitchell, Derry - Londonderry: Gateway to a New World, The Story of Emigration from the Foyle by sail and steam, (Baltimore, Md.: Clearfield Company, 2014), 34 pages, $11.00 (soft cover). ISBN:
9780806356914, Item #: CF8363

The publicity for this book says:

This book, or booklet, by genealogist and Irish emigration expert Brian Mitchell recounts the history of departures from the port of Derry-Londonderry from the late 17th century to the year 1939, when the last transatlantic steamer sailed from the port. Derry is ideally situated at head of the River Foyle, twenty-four miles long and only two miles wide at its head, a configuration that provided sailing vessels with a harbor of refuge. During the age of steam, her westerly situation gave her a monetary advantage with coal-burning vessels.

The emigration trade established Derry as one of the chief Irish ports for the transatlantic trade in the 18th century. For example, in 1771 the American colonies took more linen cloth and provisions from Derry than Britain did, and thirty percent of Ulster-Scots, around 75,000 people, emigrated through Derry to North America prior to 1776. By the 1850s two local companies, J. & J. Cooke and William McCorkell & Co., dominated transatlantic trade from Derry, building up sizeable shipping fleets. At the same time, the establishment of a railway network in Ireland secured Derry’s place as the emigration port for persons from counties Derry, Donegal, and Tyrone, as well as for travelers from County Donegal on the Inishowen peninsula.

Brian Mitchell captures the protagonists and milestones of this history in his new, beautifully illustrated tribute to Derry-Londonderry’s place in emigration history. The author’s brief narrative explains Derry’s rise and ultimate decline as a port of embarkation, conveys century by century what persons utilized the port, traces the changes in emigration from the age of sail to the age of steam, and draws attention to individuals like composer Stephen Foster’s great-grandfather, Alexander Foster, who sailed from Derry, and vessels like the Adam Lodge, which sailed from Derry to Australia.

 Highlighting the book are numerous illustrations that flesh out the Derry story, including passenger notices, sample passenger lists, pictures and photographs of actual vessels and passengers--some of them quite moving--maps, and more. Anyone who has an ancestor known to have sailed from Derry will appreciate having a copy of this book.

This book costs $11.00 plus shipping costs from Genealogical Publishing.  You can order it here.

Treasure Chest Thursday - Post 242: Death Record of Alexander Sovereen (1814-1907)

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - time to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the death record of Alexander Sovereen (1814-1907) in Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada:

The record for Alexander Sovereen is at the bottom right of the right-hand page:

The data extracted from this record is:

*  Name of deceased:  Sovereen Alexander
*  Sex:  Male
*  Date of Death:  15th August 1907
*  Age:  93
*  Residence, Street number, or Concession and Lot:  Lot 21 Con 11
*  Occupation:  Farmer
*  Single or Married:  Married
*  Where Born:  Middleton
*  Cause of Death:  Old Age
*  Length of illness: Four days
*  Name of Physician in Attendance:  None
*  Religious Denomination:  Baptist
*  Name of Person Making Return:  Corman, W.W.
*  Date of Registration:  16th August 1907

The source citation for this death record is:

"Ontario Deaths, 1869-1938 and Overseas Deaths, 1939-1947," indexed database and digital image, Ancestry.com (http:// www.ancestry.com : accessed 22 January 2014), 1907, Norfolk County, Windham division, no page number, No. 30 (penned), No. 21135 (stamped), Alexander Soverns entry.

Ancestry.com has this record with images, but FamilySearch does not.  However, FamilySearch indexed it correctly as "Sovereen."  The surname spelling is very clear to me, but I'm familiar with the spelling variations for this surname.

Alexander Sovereen (1814-1907) is my third great-grandfather.

Happy Birthday, Linda! -- Post 336 of (Not So) Wordless Wednesday

I am posting family photographs from my collection on Wednesdays, but they aren't "Wordless" - I am incapable of having a wordless post.

This is Linda's birthday today, and I want to show some pictures of her in joyful moments:

1)  We threw a surprise birthday party for Linda in 2012 at a local restaurant.  Our daughters and their families, her brother and his significant other, and 35 of our friends joined us to throw this bash.  Linda's brother made a video of her life from family photos.  She was completely surprised and loved every minute of it.

2)  Linda loves being with her grandchildren, reading with them, listening to them, and loving them.  Here she is in September 2014 with our newest grandchild, Charlie, and his two older sisters, Audrey and Lauren

Happy birthday, Linda!  You're famous now...

Gravestone Photo Notifications on BillionGraves

I wrote a series of posts last month about the features of BillionGraves, including:

*  Billion Graves Cemetery Maps and Gravesite Transcriptions (posted 20 October 2014)
*  Technology Tuesday - Billion Graves Mobile App (posted 21 October 2014)
*  Searching for Persons and Cemeteries on BillionGraves. (posed 22 October 2014)
*  BillionGraves Plus Features (posted 23 October 2014)

While reviewing the website, I added notifications for some of my surnames - Seaver, Carringer, Auble, Vaux, Richmond, and several others.

I receive emails almost every day for one or more newly indexed record on BillionGraves.  Here is one I recently received:

I clicked on the "View grave image" link and saw the web page for the memorial for Elnathan J. Vaux:

I can click on the photo and see a larger image.  I can save the image to my computer so that I can read the inscription:

The inscription says:

In Memory Of
Elnathan J. Vaux
Who Fell Asleep
22 Sep 1956
Aged 80 Years
Thy Will Be Done

Elnathan J. Vaux is buried in Holy Trinity Church, Blackdown, in Beaminster, Devon, England. There are no other Vaux persons indexed in this cemetery on BillionGraves.

Elnathan James Vaux (1875-1956) is my third cousin, three times removed.  I did not have his death date or place and now I have it and have entered it into my RootsMagic database, with a source citation of:

Not every one of the collections listed above are complete.  Some are updated occasionally.  Only a few are indexed.  Each state is somewhat different.

The user must Browse the images for most of the collections.  These are usually "waypointed" by County and then "Record Book."  Some of the "Record Books" are indexed, and some are not.  Sometimes, the researcher needs to use an index to find volume and page numbers of the actual records in another "Record Book."
