Treasure Chest Thursday - 1820 U.S. Census for Partridge and Wakeman in Ashtabula County, Ohio

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - an opportunity to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history research and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1820 U.S. Census record for the Thomas Partridge, Jasper Partridge and Sarah Wakeman households in Wayne, Ashtabula County, Ohio:

The three households were enumerated in lines 5,6 and 7:

The extracted information for each family:

*  Sarah Wakeman household:
  • 1 female aged 45 years or older (certainly Sarah (Hill) Wakeman)
*  Jasper Partridge household:
  • 3 males under age 10 (likely a son of Jasper)
  • 1 male aged 26 to 44 (certainly Jasper)
  • 1 female under age 10 (likely a daughter of Jasper)
  • 1 female aged 18 to 25 (likely a daughter of Jasper)
*  Thomas Partridge household:
  • 2 males aged 10 to 18 (likely sons Isaac and William)
  • 1 male aged 18 to 26 (likely son David)
  • 1 male aged 45 years or over  (certainly Thomas Partridge)
  • 1 female under age 10 (perhaps daughter Sarah?)
The source citation for the Thomas Partridge record is (using Evidence Explained 4th edition template):

1820 United States Federal Census, Ashtabula County, Ohio, population schedule, Wayne township, page 27 (penned), Thomas Partridge household; imaged, "1820 United States Federal Census," Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/50808:7734);  Original data: Fourth Census of the United States, 1820. (NARA microfilm publication M33, 142 rolls). Records of the Bureau of the Census, Record Group 29. National Archives, Washington, D.C.

Thomas Partridge (1758-1828) was born 15 December 1758 in Guilford, Windham County, Vermont, the son of Jasper and Mary (Rice) Partridge.  He died 1 October 1828 in Gustavus, Trumbull County, Ohio.  Thomas married (1) Hannah Wakeman (1763-1814) on 2 October 1785 in New York.  They had 11 children.  Thomas Partridge married (2) to Catharine (Kelley) Pelton (1765-1832) on 12 November 1822 in Gustavus, Ohio.  They had no children.

Jasper Partridge (1763-1836) was a brother of Thomas Partridge, and son of Jasper and Mary (Rice) Partridge.

Sarah (Hill) Wakeman (1742-1832) was the wife of George Wakeman (1740-1815) and the mother of Hannah (Wakeman) Partridge, the wife of Thomas Partridge.

Thomas and Hannah (Wakeman) Partridge are my 5th great-grandparents, through my 4th great-grandmother Mary Partridge (c1792-1855) who married Cornelius Feather (1777-1853) in about 1804, probably in Ashtabula County, Ohio.

Seavers in the News -- 1980 Obituary of Earl F. Seaver of Akron, Ohio

  Here is this week's edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Akron Beacon-Journal newspaper dated Sunday, 25 May 1980, Page 37, Column 6:

The transcription of the article is:

"Earl F. Seaver

"Earl F. Seaver, 81, of 1145 Copley Rd., Apt. 5, died Friday p.m.

"Mr. Seaver was born in Akron, and was a resident of Akron all of his life.  He was a foreman in the sheet metal department (handformer) at Plant C Goodyear Aerospace for 33 years, retiring in 1964.  He worked on the Akron and Macon dirigible.  He was a life member of Goodyear 25 Year Club.  He was a veteran of World War I, U.S. Navy, and a 50 year member of American Legion Post No. 19.  He was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Akron Lodge No. 83 F.&A.M., Akron Chapter No. 209 R. A. M., Akron Commandery No. 25 Knights Templer, Akron Council No. 80 R. S. M., Tadmor Temple Shrine, Yusef Khan Grotto, Stage Craft Unit of Tadmor Temple, and the Sons of Herman.

"Funeral services will be held at the Prentice Funeral Home, 1154 Kenmore Blvd., Tuesday at 3 p.m. with Rev. Donard M. The source citation is:

"Earl F. Seaver,The Akron[Ohio] Beacon-Journal  newspaper, Sunday, 25 May 1980, page 37, column 6, Earl F. Seaver obituary; imaged,  Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 30 September 2024).

This obituary provides a good summary of the living family of Harold W. Seaver, along with his employment, military service, and associations.

Earl Franklin Seaver (1899-1980) was born 11 February 1899 in Akron, Ohio, the son of Orrin Dalson and Jennie Hannah (Hites) Seaver.  He died 23 May 1980 in Akron, Ohio.  Earl married Augusta Wilhelmina Kramer (1900-1989) on 25 September 1920 in Akron, Ohio.  The had two children:

*  Richard Henry Seaver (1922-1991), married 1967 Esther Betty Thomas (1926-1996).
*  Kenneth Eugene Seaver (1924-1978), married 1944 Helen Zofchak (1925-1985).

Earl Franklin Seaver (1899-1980) is not a Seaver cousin to my knowledge - he is descended from Christian A. and Lydia (Kissinger) Seaver who married in Stark County, ohio in 1838.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this is one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has an excellent obituary with detailed information.  I am glad that I can honor Earl Franklin Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.

This probate record is a Derivative Source (because it is a court clerk's handwritten record in a bound book, then microfilmed and digitized by FamilySearch), Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the will of George Wakeman in Wayne township in Ashtabula County, Ohio.

George Wakeman was born before 1 June 1740 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (--?--) Wakeman.  He died after 31 July 1814 when his will was written, and before 3 January 1815 when his will was proved.  George married Sarah Hill (1742-1832) on 17 June 1762 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, Connecticut.  They had four children, all born in Fairfield:

*  Hannah Wakeman (1763-1814), married 1785 Thomas Partridge (1758-1828).
*  Levina Wakeman (1764-????).
*  Hill Wakeman (1766-1845), married 1796 Dorcas Saunders (1779-1858).
*  Samuel Wakeman (1772-1852), married 1797 Ruth Wright (1783-1865).

In his will, George Wakeman bequeathed all of his property to his wife, Sarah, and at her death, the remainder was to be distributed to all of his heirs.  He made one additional bequest to David Partridge, who was the youngest son of Thomas and Hannah (Wakeman) Partridge.  I have not been able to identify Rachel Mapes to date, she may be a heretofore unknown daughter, or a child of one of the other children.

George and Sarah (Hill) Wakeman are my 6th great-grandparents, through their daughter Hannah Wakeman (1763-1814) who married Thomas Partridge (1758-1828) in 1785.

NOTE:  This will was not in the Ohio Wlls and Probates collection on Ancestry.com (no will from Ashtabula County before 1849 is in that collection), nor on the Full-Text Search on FamilySearch.  This will was found by using the FamilySearch Catalog and going page-by-page through the first 100 images of Volumes A-B of these Ashtabula probate court recorts.
