Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Photos of Your Spouse, Significant Other, or Parent

  Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along - cue the Mission Impossible music!):

1)  Do you have photos of your spouse, or significant other, or a parent, or a grandparent?  Please share some of them!  Have you collected all of the photos of your spouse/SO/parent/grandparent in a computer file folder?

2)  Write your own blog post, or leave a comment on this post, or write something on Facebook.

Here's mine:

My wife is Linda Joan Leland, born in 1942 in San Francisco, the daughter of Lee Severt and Edna May (Schaffner) Leland.  Here she is as a young girl (ca 1950):

And as a high school graduate (1960):

As a San Francisco State college graduate (1964):

As a bride (1970):

As a young mother (1977):

As an older mother (1985):

As a mother of the bride (1997):

As a swimming teacher (2004):

As a mother and grandmother (2018):

In the memory care facility (2023):

I have these photos and many, many more of Linda (with family and friends too) in a number of family photo file folders on my computer.  Maybe I need to collect them all in one place????  And photos of me too.  And my parents.  And my grandparents.  I still have plenty of computer file space...

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Findmypast Friday: Discover Dorset Stories With This Week's Release

I received this information from Findmypast today:

==========================================

Discover Dorset stories with this week's release

This Findmypast Friday, there are over 120,000 exciting new additions to explore from parishes across Dorset in the south of England.

If you've got roots in the South-West of England, this week's record release may just be able to fill in the blanks on your family tree. From baptisms to burials, read on for a full rundown of what's been added.

New Dorset parish records

This Findmypast Friday sees a triple whammy of Dorset records added to our parish collections. Across our baptism, marriage and burial sets, there are a total of 121,225 new additions for you to discover. We have baptism, marriage, and burial records from 342 parishes across the county of Dorset, covering over 450 years. Check out the full parish list for more information.

These records are the building blocks of your family tree. Whether you're tracing back a distant lineage or adding more details to family members you already know, these sets may prove key to your research.

Dorset Baptisms

First up this week is an update to our existing collection of Dorset Baptisms. We've added 38,873 new records from parishes across the county. These new additions span from 1568 to 1930.

The transcriptions in this set contain key information such as a name, birth date and place, baptism date and place, the church name, both parents' names, and the father's occupation. The information included varies slightly, especially when it comes to the very early 15th-century records.

You may also learn parents' addresses from records in this collection. If you're eager to build up a vivid picture of how and where your ancestors lived, this detail will be a huge help - who knows, perhaps the house your family lived in is still standing today.

Dorset Marriages

Next up, we've also updated our collection of Dorset Marriages, with 52,622 new records now available for you to explore.

Stretching as far back as 1470, these additions span over 500 years of Dorset's history. This means that if your ancestors were married in Dorset between 1470 and 1974, their names may just appear in this release.

The 675,000 records within this transcription-only set contain key details like a name, spouse's name, marriage date, parish, occupation and more. You'll likely be able to uncover whether someone was married by banns or by licence, and in some cases, the names of witnesses are also included.

Dorset Burials

Last but not least, we've also added 29,730 burial records from parishes across Dorset. These records span from 1559 to 1993.

If you're struggling to build your family tree back through the centuries, these additions may just provide some of the answers you need.

Like this week's other updated sets, these burials are transcription-only. Within each transcription, you'll find key details like a name, age, birth year, burial date, burial place, and county.

You'll find records from 342 parishes across Dorset within this collection as a whole. We recommend browsing our Dorset parish list for the full rundown of what's covered across the county.

Introducing our new podcast

We're delighted to announce that the first two episodes of our new podcast, Step into the Past, are available for you to listen to.

Take a stroll with Suzannah Lipscomb, as we weave together the past and the present in places that made history. With family history discoveries and so much more, this isn't one to be missed.

This week in newspapers: 100,000 new pages to explore

This Findmypast Friday, our newspaper collection grew by 96,120 pages. We've added two brand new titles - Liverpool Saturday's Advertiser and the Epsom Journal - and updated 10 of our existing publications.

In addition to this week's two new titles, there are updates to many other newspapers within our collection, with brand new pages from Sherborne to Southwark. Here's a full rundown of all that's been added.

New titles:
Updated titles:
  • Bayswater Chronicle: 1892, 1894-1895, 1897, 1901-1908

William and Rebecca were admitted to the Cambridge church on 28 July 1700[2].

William Cutter of Cambridge wrote his will on 1 June 1722, and died on 1 April 1723 in Cambridge.  His will was proved in Middlesex Probate Court on 29 April 1723[6].  Rebecca was named one of the executors of the estate, along with their four older sons.  She was bequeathed:
"Item I Give to my dear and loving Wife Rebeckah Cutter the full improvement of a third part of my lands, and the Est end of my now Dwelling house during her Natural Life, and a third part of my moveable Estate to be at her own despose for ever."
Rebecca (Rolfe) Cutter married, as her second husband and his second wife, John Whitmore, Senior, a Deacon and highly trustworthy citizen of Medford, on 3 June 1724 in Cambridge[1-2,8]. Deacon Whitmore died 22 February 1739-40, aged 84 years.

Rabbit Holes With Randy - The "Wheels" in Heredis Genealogy Software

I recently obtained Heredis software (see Genealogy Software: Heredis 2024 Is Available!), installed it, and imported a GEDCOM file of my family tree (with over 71,400 profiles) and checked it out.

The software publicity mentioned "wheels" and I wanted to determine what that was and how it was used.  In short, a "wheel" is a circular representation of a persons ancestor or descendant family tree - like a fan chart.  In Heredis, it can be a whole circle, a half circle or a portion of a circle - the user can control the shape of the family tree.

Here is a screen shot of a 9 generation "Ancestors wheel" (I chose a 225 degree "wheel" for this) of my great-grandmother, Julia E. White (1848-1913) with the background colors determined by the County the person was born in:

Here is a 7 generation "Descendants wheel" for Julie E. White (again colored by County) showing descendants of Julia:

One of the new features of Heredis is a "Mixed wheel" (180 degrees for each type) showing both ancestors (9 generations) and descendants (7 generations) of Julia E. White:

When you are on the screen, you can run your mouse over the screen to zoom in and out of a portion of the tree.  Here is a zoomed portion of the "Mixed wheel" so I can examine a portion of the tree:

I had not seen a "Descendant wheel" or "Mixed wheel" chart before.  There are several different options for the background colors that can be selected by the user.

I'm still exploring the many features of Heredis.  There are significant differences in how the family tree is displayed in Heredis versus Family Tree Maker, RootsMagic and Legacy Family Tree (the other software programs I am familiar with).  One difference is that all names in Heredis are displayed with the surname first and in capitals as shown above.  Another is how dates are displayed - as month/day/year.  I haven't yet figured out if those items can be modified.

It was fun and informative to go down this rabbit hole this week.  There are many more screens and features for this curious bunny to explore.

Disclosure:  I have received complimentary copies of Heredis software over the years, including this most recent version, but I have never really explored it.  I am in the process of exploring how I might use this software to enhance my genealogy research.
