Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- When Has Someone Helped You Find A Record or Solve a Mystery?

  Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night Again -

Time For Some More Genealogy Fun!!

Come on, everybody, join in and accept the mission and execute it with precision.

1)  We all need, and usually enjoy, a little help from our genealogy friends.  This week's challenge is to share a time when a genea-friend helped you find a record, or even solve a mystery.  It could be a recent help, or something from long ago.

2) Tell us about them in a comment on this post, or in a Facebook post.  Please leave a link on this post if you write your own post.

Here's mine:

I have had many genea-friends help me find a record, help translate a record, or even solve a mystery.  There are so many instances of this that I'm afraid I will leave someone out.  So I will mention the most recent time.

Two weeks ago, I mentioned on Mondays With Myrt that I had German migrants coming to America in the 1700s and 1800s and that I could not find parents for them.  Frank Jatzek, who is a panelist on Mondays With Myrt, lives and works in Germany, and is very active on WikiTree, asked me in a Facebook message for more details.  I told him that my wife Linda has several German migrants in the 1800 to 1850 time and Frank looked at my tree (I think on Ancestry, but I'm not even sure!), picked out several ancestors and started working on them.

One of the persons was Linda's second great-grandfather,  Frederick Schaffner (c1828-1899), who came to America in about 1850 and settled in New York City, married Susanna Hoffman (c1830-????) and had a son, Herman Schaffner (1851-1921).  In about 1855, Frederick married Martha Matilda --?-- (c1837-1875) in New York. They moved to San Francisco, California by 1857 and had five children born there.  Frederick married Dora Mossman (1838-1904) in 1876 in San Francisco, but they had no children.

Frank found a record for Friederich Nicolaus Schaffner, born 20 November 1829 and baptized on 22 November 1829 in Darmstadt, Hessen records on FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPJZ-VCTL).  The parents were named Christian Schaffner and Elisabeth Harth.  The male sponsor is Nicolaus Harth, perhaps a brother of Elisabeth.  Here is the record (I have isolated the particular record so it is semi-readable):

The source citation provided by FamilySearch with the record image and record summary is:

"Deutschland, ausgewählte evangelische Kirchenbücher 1500-1971," database and image, FamilySearch   (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QPJZ-VCTL : 22 March 2023), Friederich Nicolaus Schaffner, 22 Nov 1829; images digitized and records extracted by Ancestry; citing Baptism, Darmstadt, Kreis Darmstadt, Hessen, Deutschland, German Lutheran Collection, various parishes, Germany.

Frank is able to read these records because he is an expert in German records of this type.  He also found the baptism of a brother and a sister of Frederick Schaffner in the records (although the father's name was different for some reason).  FamilySearch indexed the mother's name as "Groth" but Frank reads it as "Harth."

I am very pleased to add the birth and baptism of Frederick Schaffner, his two known siblings, and his parents to my wife's family tree.

The genealogy world has many researchers like Frank who are willing to take the time to do a little research, even translate or transcribe a record, and provide the information by the goodness of their heart.  Thank you very much, Frank.

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

52 Relatives: Elizabeth Ann (Richman/mond) Sykes (1854-1931) of Hilperton Marsh, Wiltshire and Putnam, Connecticut

I have posted over 500 genealogical sketches of  my ancestors back through the 7th great-grandparents - see the list in 52 Ancestors Biographies.

I started a new weekly series called "52 Relatives" to document the lives of siblings of my ancestors with relatively short genealogical sketches with events and source citations.  They lived and died, and deserve a sketch also - they were integral parts of the lives of my ancestral families.  I will post the sketches on my Ancestry Member Tree and in the FamilySearch Family Tree.

                                               =================================

Elizabeth Ann Richman was born in August 1854 in Hilperton, Wiltshire, England[1], and was baptized on 1 October 1854 in the Staverton, Wiltshire parish church[2].  She was the fifth child, and third daughter, of James and Hannah (Rich) Richman of Hilperton Marsh.

The passenger list of the British Ship Osprey that departed Bristol and arrived in New York City on 14 November 1856 includes Hannah Richman and five children[3]:
*  Hannah Richman - age 32, female, a wife
*  James Richman - age 7, male, a child
*  Thomas Richman - age 6, male, a child
*  Louisa Richman - age 4, female, a child
*  Elizabeth Richman - age 3, female, a child
*  Ann Richman - an infant, female, a child
Her father, James Richman, had migrated to Rhode Island in 1855.  After emigration, the family used Richmond as their surname.

In the 1860 United States census, the James Richmond family resided in Burrillville, Providence County, Rhode Island[4]. The household included:
*   James Richmond -- age 38, male, white, farm laborer, born England
*  Hannah Richmond -- age 36, female, born England
*  Thomas Richmond -- age 12, male, born England, attended school
*  James Richmond -- age 10, male, born England, attended school
*  Louisa Richmond -- age 8, female, born England, attended school
*  Elizabeth A. Richmond -- age 5, female, born England, attended school
*  Emma Richmond -- age 6, female, born England, attended school
*  Hannah R. Richmond -- age 2, female, born RI.
In the 1870 United States census, the James Richmond family resided in Putnam, Windham County, Connecticut in the house of George Whitford[5]. The household included:
*  James Richmond -- age 49, male, works for woolen mill, born England
*  Anna Richmond -- age 45, female, keeping house, born England
*  Louisa Richmond -- age 17, female, works in woolen mill, born England
*  Elizabeth Richmond -- age 15, female, works in woolen mill, born England
*  Emma Richmond -- age 13, female, works in woolen mill, born England
*  Rebeca Richmond -- age 11, female, born RI, attended school
*  John Richmond -- age 5, male, born RI, attended school
*  Charles Richmond -- age 3, male, born CT

Elizabeth Ann Richmond married Abram Sykes in about 1876, probably in Putnam, Windham County, Connecticut.  They had two children:

*  Reuben James Sykes, born October 1876 in Putnam, Windham County, Connecticut, died 1910 in Putnam, Windham County, Connectivut.  He married Edith A. Rothe (1877-1912) in 1899 in Connecticut.

*  Gertrude Elizabeth Sykes, born 9 May 1878 in Putnam, Windham County, connecticut, died 7 August 1946 in Loveland, Larimer County, Colorado.  She married Jay Arthur Martin (1882-1957) on 12 July 1911 in Janesville, Lassen County, California.

In the 1880 United States Census, the Abram Sykes family resided in Putnam, Windham County, Connecticut[6]. The household included:

* Abram Sykes - white, male, age 29, married, works in woolen mill, born Rhode Island, father born England, mother born England.

* Elizabeth A. Sykes - white, female, age 25, wife, married keeping house, born in England, father born England, mother born England.

* Reuben J. Sykes - white, male, age 3, son, born Connecticut, father born Rhode Island, mother born England.

* Gertrude E. Sykes - white, female, age 1, daughter, born Connecticut, father born Rhode Island, mother born England.

In the 1900 United States Census, the Abram Sykes family resided on School Street in Putnam, Windham County, Connecticut[1].  The household included:

*  Abram Sykes - Head, white, male, born Jan 1851, age 49, married, for 24 years, born Rhode Island, father born England, mother born England, overseer in woolen mill, can read and write, speaks English, rents house

*  Elizabeth A. Sykes - wife, white, female, born Aug 1854, married, for 24 years, 2 children born, 2 living, born in England, father born England, mother born England, immigrated in 1870, in U.S. 30 years, can read and write, speaks English

*  Gertrude E. Sykes - daughter, white, female, born June 1878, age 21 single, born Connecticut, father born Rhode Island, mother born England, a dressmaker, can read and write, speaks English

Abram Sykes died in 1905 in Putnam, Windham County, Connecticut, leaving Elizabeth with two teenage children.

There are no further records for Elizabeth Ann (Richman) Sykes until her death and burial.  The death of Elizabeth A. Richmond Sykes is recorded in the Connecticut, Hale Cemetery Inscriptions and Newspaper Notices, 1629-1934, for Putnam, Grove Street Cemetery, Elizabeth A. Richmond Sykes entry, wife of Abram, born 1854, died 1931[7-9]. The gravestone inscription is:

Crista Cowan, known online as The Barefoot Genealogist, has acquired the company from Janet Hovorka, continuing and expanding the vision of making family history more visible and cherished in homes around the world.

Founded by Janet and Kim Hovorka more than 20 years ago, Family ChartMasters has become synonymous with high-quality, personalized genealogy charts, helping thousands of families create conversation pieces showcasing the family history they have uncovered. Following the passing of co-founder Kim Hovorka in 2021, Janet continued on with their team but Kim was such an important part of Family Chartmasters that it was difficult to go forward without him. Fortunately, Crista's passion for genealogy and commitment to the company's values and mission have paved the way for a promising future.

Janet expressed her gratitude and optimism, stating, "It's with a heart full of optimism that I pass the torch to Crista.
