Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Your Greatest Achievement

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

 It's Saturday Night again -

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music, please!):

1) We all need to pass on family stories to our descendants.  Some of the questions can be difficult to write about.  Let's try this one:

2)  What will be the greatest achievement of your life?  Is it behind you, or still ahead of you?

Write about it in a blog post on your own blog, in a Facebook post, or as a comment on this blog post.

Here's mine:

After 76 years of living, I think my greatest "achievement" was marrying Linda in 1970, then having and raising two smart, beautiful, and wonderful daughters that are kind, tolerant, loving, hard working, and excellent parents.  I think they are better parents than we were.  Lori was born in 1974 and Tami in 1976.  After Lori was born, I continued working as an aerospace engineer, but Linda quit being an elementary schoolteacher to raise the girls, and volunteered at their schools until she went back to teaching in 1989.

Their childhood and tween years were amazing - it was hard but rewarding work, but they wanted to learn, wanted to have fun, and were relatively easy to raise.  They went to preschool at our church, and then to an elementary school in a gifted program.  We regularly explored San Diego beaches, parks, museums, zoos.  We took family vacations to the Forest Home church camp, to see their San Francisco grandparents, and to sightsee around the country.  They both played girls softball, Lori was a pitcher and Tami a catcher.

Their teenage and college years were more challenging.  Lori went to Hilltop Junior High and then Chula Vista High School in their Gifted and Talented program, and played softball and was a cheerleader.  Tami went to Hilltop Junior High, and then to Hilltop High School in their Foreign Language and Global Studies program, and studied Russian for six years.  They both participated in the youth group at our home church.  Lori went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the aerospace engineering program, but switched to early childhood education, and spent a year in grad school at Sonoma State University.  Tami went to Azusa Pacific University, and received a degree in Psychology, and went to Russia three times on their Mission program.  They both became very independent at college.

Tami married in 1997 in our Chula Vista church, and they resided in Long Beach and Victorville, before moving to Huntington Beach in 2013.  She received a Masters and Doctor of Education at LaVerne University after her marriage, and works in management for two online universities.  They have three children, now 15, 12 and almost 6.

Lori married in 2000 at her current residence in the Santa Cruz mountains, and has two children, ages almost 17 and 14, and works as a nanny and as an office manager for a small architectural firm.

They both "take care" of their parents in their "old age" - phone calls, FaceTiming, Amazon gifts, visits, etc.

Life has had other challenges for me and I am very proud of:

*  Receiving a BS in Aerospace Engineering at San Diego State University in 1966, and surviving a 38 year career at Rohr Industries/Goodrich Aerospace as an aerodynamicist and Chief of the Aero/Thermo group there, working on and supporting almost all of the aircraft engine programs from 1967 to 2002 with analysis, testing, reporting, and managing resources.

*  With college educations and work ethics, being responsible for our words and actions, obeying the law, being kind and tolerant of other people, saving money for our home, making wise investment, retirement and health decisions, and good luck in not choosing our parents, we are doing OK for older folks.  OTOH, anyone else can do it too.

*  Becoming a decent genealogy researcher, having researched my own ancestry, my wife's ancestry, my grandchildrens' ancestry, and also a number of one name studies since 1988 and still going strong.  Also, becoming a well-known genealogy/family history blogger since 2006 with a worldwide readership, and a presenter, mainly in the southwest, of genealogy oriented programs to genealogy societies and the OASIS senior adult education program in San Diego.

I think I am still "living in" my greatest achievement - being a husband, father and a grandfather is ongoing and great fun.

My friend, Marshall, has come up with a program to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED.  Thanks to Marshall for helping us out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link).  It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

New Records Available To Search This Findmypast Friday, 14 August 2020

I received this information from Findmypast today:

Over 41 million new records from historical English, Scottish and Irish Gazettes now online at Findmypast

Covering over 350 years of news government notices, historical gazettes from London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Dublin are now available to search on Findmypast

Covering over 350 years of news government notices, historical gazettes from London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Dublin are now available to search on Findmypast. Together, these four Gazette collections contain a staggering 41.3 million records that are packed with valuable information for your family tree and provide an excellent source of historical context for better understanding the world in which your ancestors lived.

London Gazette 1665-2018

Taken from the official UK government newspaper, unlock over 350 years of fascinating London stories in almost 34 million new records.

The London Gazette was first published as The Oxford Gazette on 7 November 1665. Charles II and the Royal Court had moved to Oxford to escape the Great Plague of London, and courtiers were unwilling to handle London newspapers for fear of contagion.

The Gazette was "Published by Authority" by Henry Muddiman, and its first publication is noted by Samuel Pepys in his diary. Charles II returned to London as the plague dissipated, and the Gazette moved too, with the first issue of The London Gazette being published on 5 February 1666, it was labelled number 24. The Gazette was not a newspaper in the modern sense, it was sent by post to subscribers, as opposed to being printed for sale to the general public.

Her Majesty's Stationary Office took over the publication of the Gazette in 1889. Publication of the Gazette was transferred to the private sector, under government supervision, in the 1990s, when Her Majesty's Stationary Office was sold and renamed The Stationery Office.

Scotland, Edinburgh Gazette 1797-2018

The Edinburgh Gazette is the Official Newspaper of Record for Scotland. Subscribers to Findmypast can now explore over 220 years of Scottish history in over 4 million individual records.

Published twice weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays by The Stationery Office, on behalf of Her Majesty’s Stationery Office in Edinburgh, The Edinburgh Gazette is the Official Newspaper of Record for Scotland. The gazette includes legal and official announcements from HM Government, the Scottish Executive, the Parliaments at Westminster and Holyrood, the Armed Forces, local authorities, churches, companies and private citizens.

Founded in 1699, eight years before the Act of Union, the gazette was produced sporadically until 1793, since then it has been published continuously.

Ireland, Belfast Gazette 1922-2018

Delve into a nearly century of Northern Irish newspaper stories including business notices and the Queen’s annual honours lists in the Belfast Gazette.

Published weekly on Fridays by The Stationery Office, on behalf of Her Majesty’s Stationery Office in Belfast, The Belfast Gazette is the Official Newspaper of Record for Northern Ireland. It printed legal and official announcements from HM Government, the Northern Ireland Executive, the Armed Forces, local authorities, churches, companies and private citizens.

As it became increasingly clear that Ireland would be divided, the north would require its separate Official Newspaper of Record, and the Belfast Gazette was founded in June 1921 as a successor to the Dublin Gazette.

Ireland, Dublin Gazette 1750-1800

Step back into 18th-century Ireland with records covering 50 years of news from the British government at Dublin Castle.

A Dublin Gazette was first instituted in May 1689 by King James II, however, after his defeat in 1690 at the Battle of the Boyne its functions were taken over by The London Gazette. In 1705, under the Lord Lieutenancy of the 2nd Duke of Ormonde, a new Dublin Gazette was founded, although in its early days it was only two pages in length.

The printers of the Gazette held onto their ownership until almost the end of the 18th century. However, on the 9 April 1799, two rival versions of the gazette were published, one by the established publisher, Sir St George O’Kelly, and a second by George Grierson, the King's printer. O'Kelly complained, but to no avail and lost the right to publish the title. It is now surmised that following the Irish Rebellion of 1798, and in the year before the Act of Union of 1800, the Irish government felt it needed total control.

From 1919, during the Irish War of Independence, the Gazette was challenged by the Irish Bulletin, the official newspaper of the rival government of the Irish Republic, produced by its Department of Propaganda and appearing weekly from 11 November 1919 to 11 July 1921. The War of Independence resulted in the Anglo-Irish Treaty, signed in London on 6 December 1921, and as a result, the final edition of The Dublin Gazette was published on 27 January 1922. Four days later, on 31 January, the newly created Irish Free State began to publish a new gazette called Iris Oifigiúil.
