Here's mine:

Randy's From Where?

I am from an all grown up small town,

My San Diego is sun, beach and canyons,
from jacaranda trees with purple flowers.
Sunburn, body surfing and sand castles.

I grew up in a Victorian house with no porches,
With angled walls and secret places,

Sliding down a rear stair bannister,
to a backyard with boysenberry bushes.

From Rice Krispies and scrambled eggs,
Hamburgers on the backyard grill,
Doughnuts and bread from the bakery,
Ice cream cones at the corner drug store.

From Cavemen, Padres, Chargers and Aztecs.
Football in the street, baseball in the park,
Bicycles, flexies and scooters, newspaper routes,
Berry sales, Piggly Wiggly and five-and-dime stores.

I am from Seavers, Richmonds, Hildreths, and Smiths,
Carringers, Spanglers, Aubles and Kemps,
Hard working, easy playing, home building,
Laughing, learning, teaching and loving.

I am from Chula Vista, Leominster, Hilperton,
McCook, Oak Grove, Sandy Lake, Aurora,
Killingly, Townsend, Woodbridge, Terre Haute,
colonial America, Ontario, Wiltshire and Somerset.

I am from the snake oil salesman, the blacksmith,

The house painter, the many farmers, the soldiers,
The carpenter, the wheelwright, the preacher,
And all of the dear homemakers.

I am from Episcopalians and agnostics,
Quakers, Baptists and Methodists,
Congregationalists and Pilgrims,
and turned into a Presbyterian.

I am from a family of encouragers
And triers and second place winners.
From "never give up," "do your best"
and "well done, you tried hard."

I am from folks in faded and crumbling pictures,
From sod houses and salt boxes,

From homes with wood stoves and straw beds,
With outdoor plumbing and honey pots.

I am from towns built in the wilderness
And a large modern city with palm trees.
From families sewn together by love
And the indomitable human spirit.

If I can do it, you can do it!  It's amazing what memories and thoughts come to mind when you write about "Where I'm From."

Ancestry.com Activates Member Connect in Ancestry Member Trees

The Ancestry.com blog just published The New Ancestry: November 13th Feature Update today that
notes that the Member Connect feature has returned to the Ancestry Member Trees.

On a person profile, the "Member Connect" link is on the navigation bar below the name and also on the Tools dropdown menu, as shown below:

 After I clicked on the Member Connect link for this person, the page opened indicating that there were 17 Suggested Connections for this person.  Each other Ancestry Member Tree with this person has information for a number of Facts, the Fact that is different, and the source in the right hand column (three screens below):

And it goes on for all 17 other Ancestry Member Trees that have this person in them.  The top of the screen above indicates that there are 4 pages of these connections for this person, but the page numbers don't work - but the right and left arrows do work.

Likewise, at the top of the Member Connect screen are buttons for "Recent Activity," "Connections," and "Suggested Connections."  At this time, they all go to this page - they don't go anywhere else for some reason.  Perhaps it's still in development.

The significant value of this Member Connect feature is probably that a user can click on one of the sources in the right-hand column and see the actual record, and can then Save it to their Tree person if the user chooses to do it.

NOTE:  I think that this is active only in the "New Ancestry" format.  I cannot get to "Classic" format for some reason to check.

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 98: #120 John Kemp (1768-1861)

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

Most of the information about John Kemp and his family was obtained from Cheryl Kemp Taber and can be seen on her Rootsweb WorldConnect database (http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=cdn-kemp)[1]

John Kemp was born in about 1768, probably in Schenectady or Ballston Spa in New York state, the son of John and Anna (Van Vorst) Kemp[1].

John Kemp Jr. is on the provision list of Kingston, Ontario for the King's Rangers in 1786.  As a result of his service and loyalty to the Crown, he was recommended for 200 acres of land in 1797, receiving a full grant in Huntingdon township, and in Fredericksburgh in 1800.  He apparently was first a Sergeant, then a Captain Coronet in the Addington Dragoons under Captain Trumpours in the War of 1812[1].

The marriage record of John Kemp and Mary Dafoe was in Fredericksburgh in Addington and Lennox County, Ontario[2].  The record says:

"John Kemp, Fredericksburgh, bachelor, and Mary Defoe, same place, spinster, January 26, 1795
John Finkle, Jacop Finkle, Andrew Rikley, Margaret Huffman [Witnesses]"

John and Mary (Dafoe) Kemp had nine children born between 1795 and 1812, and all of them were baptized in the Fredericksburgh church[5]

John Kemp moved from Fredericksburgh in Addington County to Ameliasburg in Prince Edward County, and in about 1817 he became a resident of Brighton township, Northumberland County, Ontario by 1821. He was a tavern keeper in Fredericksburgh, and a labourer[1].

A number of land patents were granted to him in Fredericksburgh township in Addington County in 1822 and 1823; in Huntingdon township, Hastings County in 1823 and 1832; in Vespra township, Simcoe County in 1834-1836[1].

In the 1851 Canada West census, John Kemp was enumerated in Brighton township, Northumberland County, Ontario with the Obed and Mary Simpson family (Note:  Mary Simpson was the daughter of John Kemp).  Information about John Kemp (line 44) includes[3]:

*  Name:  John Kemp
*  Occupation:  Labourer
*  Birthplace:  U.S.A.
*  Religion:  E. Methodist
*  Age:  85
*  Sex:  Male

In the 1861 Canada West census for Cramahe township, Northumberland County, Ontario, John Kemp is listed in the John Wade household (Elizabeth Wade was John Kemp's granddaughter, daughter of Obed and Mary (Kemp) Simpson).  His enumeration includes[4]:

*  Name:  John Kemp
*  Birthplace:  U.S.
*  Religion:  C of E [Church of England]
*  Age:  94
*  Sex:  Male
*  Marital Status:  Widower
*  Member of Family:  No

The 1861 Canada West Census is the last known record of John Kemp.  He may have died shortly after April 1861, probably in Cramahe, Northumberland County, Ontario.
