Randy at RootsTech - Saturday, Day 3 Virtual Activities

Between blogging, emailing, trying out new website features, and watching RootsTech sessions, this has been a very busy day!  I did manage to visit Linda for an hour at hewr facility, go grocery shopping, have lunch, doze in the recliner, and check Facebook for Relatives at RootsTech, but this is post #5 today (I slacked off, I guess)!

1)  Sessions Observed (and available handouts saved):

*  Ancestral Estate Planning Or Lack Thereof by Michael John Neill.

Tracking Lives With Technology by Donald R. Snow

*  1. Your Ancestor’s FAN Club: Using Cluster Research to Get Past Brick Walls by Drew Smith

2. Your Ancestor’s FAN Club: Using Cluster Research to Get Past Brick Walls by Drew Smith

I found the Sessions list of presentations to be very difficult to use.  It's difficult to sort through over 1200 presentations for 2022.  It helped that there were series - at least they were listed together.  There are some live sessions that I can't get into - it takes me to a Zoom room where nothing is happening.  Maybe they will be available later.

2)  News From Companies:

*  We're Halfway Through!—RootsTech 2022 Recap, Day 2 [FamilySearch]

3)  My RootsTech Blog Posts:

Randy at RootsTech 2022 - Day 2 Virtual Activities

*  Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - RootsTech 2022

4)  Notable RootsTech Blog Posts:

Day Two at RootsTech by Ellen Thompson-Jennings.

*  RootsTech Day Two by The National Genealogical Institute for Genealogical Studies.

RootsTech Day Three by The National Genealogical Institute for Genealogical Studies.

*  Rootstech 2022-Last Day! by Lori Samuelson.

*  RootsTech 2022 Day 2: Fooling Around With FamilySearch, FTDNA, And More by Melody Lassalle.

LiveStory by John D. Reid.

*  RootsTech 2022 – Closing Day for Live Sessions + Your Next Steps by Linda Stufflebean.

5)  The Conference is Over!

Is everybody tired?  It seems so - blog writing fell of over the last day.  The conference is over, but the recordings remain.  My plan is to note what others have watched and try to watch the ones of interest over the next month or so.

For those readers that wondered about it, I won't be doing a Genealogy Blog Compendium for RootsTech 2022.  I  added a section to this daily wrapup post for notable genealogy blogs about RootsTech.  Why?  Many blogs have been abandoned in favor of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, etc., plus I have other tasks to do.

I will post more blog posts as they come in in a summary post in the near future.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - RootsTech 2022

 It's Saturday Night -

time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible music here) is to:

1)  The RootsTech 2022 Virtual Conference was Thursday through Saturday (March 3-5) this week.  Did you register and attend classes?  Did you watch the Keynote talks?  Did you visit the virtual Expo Hall?  What was your favorite experience?

2)  Tell us about it in your own blog post, in a comment to this post, or in a Facebook post.  Be sure to leave a link with your answers in a comment.

Here's mine:

I registered a long time ago for the RootsTech 2022 Conference, and participated all three days in a limited fashion.  I am a RootsTech Influencer also, meaning I'm supposed to provide publicity for the Conference.

I have watched the Ancestry.com and MyHeritage Keynote talks.  The inspirational and entertainment Keynotes are interesting, and I may watch some of them in the weeks ahead.

I watched several pre-recorded classes each day, and have listed them in my daily wrapup blog posts.

I visited the Expo Hall briefly and asked questions of MyHeritage and American Ancestors.  Ancestry did not have a Chat function.

I wrote blog posts on all three days about the conference, and have listed them in my daily wrapup blog posts.

I checked the Relatives at RootsTech feature every day to see who might be a relative.  Last year, my closest relative as a 3rd cousin 1x removed.  This year it's a 1st cousin 1x removed, and I also have a 2nd cousin 1x removed.  Those and several others further down the list are also DNA matches.  At this writing, I have over 85,000 Relatives at RootsTech, but can see only the first 300 of them (down to 6th cousins).

My favorite experiences were trying out the new Ancestry Stories and enhanced photographs on my Ancestry Member Tree, and creating a Live Story about my mother on MyHeritage.   I wrote blog posts about both of those experiences in:

Disclosure: I receive a complimentary all-access subscription from Ancestry.com, for which I am thankful. Ancestry.com has provided material considerations for travel expenses to meetings, and has hosted events and meals that I have attended in Salt Lake City, in past years.

===========================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, provides this list to me from a program he wrote that compares the current FamilySearch record collections list to the previous week's list.

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.
