*  Child 2:                 Thomas Martin (1764-1810)

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

Limited information about this Martin family was obtained from the Patty Barthell Myers book titled Ancestors and Descendants of Lewis Ross Freeman with related families, based partially on the work of Freeman Worth Gardiner and Willis Freeman.[1]

Thomas Martin was born in about 1737 to Mulford and Zerviah (Dunham) Martin in Piscataway, New Jersey.[1]  He was a weaver, according to his will.

On 15 February 1762, Thomas Martin married Elizabeth Ayers in Middlesex County, New Jersey.[1-2]  Elizabeth was born in about 1745 in Woodbridge, New Jersey, the daughter of James and Hope (Bloomfield) Ayers.  They had two children[1,3-4]:

*  Mulford Martin (1763-1843), married (1) Rachel Martin (1757-1788) in about 1781, and married  (2) Betsey Rolfe (1766-????) in 1788.
*  Thomas Martin (1765-1810), married Catherine Davenport (1764-1832) in about 1784.

Elizabeth (Ayers) Martin died before 6 October 1767, probably in Woodbridge, leaving two small children.  Thomas Martin wrote his will on 6 October 1767 and does not mention his wife.[3-4]

Thomas died before 19 October 1767, probably in Woodbridge, when his will was proved in Middlesex County Surrogates Court.[3-4]

They left two small children (about ages 4 and 2) to be raised by the family - perhaps one of Thomas Martin's or Elizabeth Ayers siblings or cousins.

There are no death records or burial records for either Thomas Martin or Elizabeth (Ayers) Martin.

The will of Thomas Martin was found in the New Jersey Surrogates Court records.[3]  It says:

Treasure Chest Thursday - 1830 U.S. Census Record for Mulford Martin Household in Woodbridge, New Jersey

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1830 United States Census record for the Mulford Martin household in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey:

The Mulford Martin entry is the 16th entry from the top of the page (with other Martin households nearby):
A Samuel Martin is two lines above Mulford, Hiram Martin is on the line below Mulford, and Merrit Mulford is below Hiram Mulford. All are aged 20 to 29 in 1830.  It is not known if those three are sons of Mulford Martin, but they may be.

The  Mulford Martin family information from this record is:

*  1 male aged 15 to 19 (perhaps an unknown son or a grandson)
*  1 male aged 50 to 59 (certainly Mulford Martin, born ca 1763)

*  1 female aged 50 to 59 (certainly Betsey (Rolfe) Martin, born in 1766)

The source citation for this record is:

1830 United States Federal Census, Population Schedule, Middesex County, New Jersey, population schedule, Woodbridge, page 150 (penned), Mulford Martin household; indexed record and digital image, Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com), citing National Archives Microfilm Publication M19, Roll 83.

Mulford Martin (1763-1845) married Betsey Rolfe (1766-????) in about 1789, probably in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey.  in Wantage, New Jersey.  They had four known sons and to known daughters.

Mulford and Betsey (Rolfe) Martin are my 5th great-grandparents, through their daughter Sarah Martin (1792-1860) who married  John Putman (1785-1863) about 1810 in Seneca County, New York.

The source citation for this document is:

"Essex County, MA: Probate Papers, 1638-1881," digital images, American Ancestors (http://www.AmericanAncestors.org : accessed, 17 May 2015), Packet 18,790, George Martin of Amesbury, 1686 (5 images); citing original records supplied by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Archives, with digitized mages provided by FamilySearch.org.

George Martin (1618-1686) married, firstly, Hannah LNU (1624-1646) in about 1641, who bore him one child, daughter Hannah Martin (1643-1730), who married Ezekiel Wathen (1636-1716).  George married, secondly, Susanna North (1621-1692) in 1646, and she bore him nine children.  Susanna (North) Martin was executed in the Salem witch trials of 1692.

The only other document in the probate packet was an inventory taken by John Weed and Nathaniel Park on 15 April 1686.  The inventory totaled £75-10-0, with the real estate £48.

George Martin probably died before 15 April 1686, which was the date of the inventory.  There is no entry for his death in the Salisbury or Amesbury vital record books.

In his will, George mentions his wife Susanna, and names her executrix with their son William Martin (1663-1726) also an executor.  He mentions three living sons in 1684 - Richard, John and William, and four living daughters - Hannah Wathen, Hester Gimson [Jameson], Jane Hadley and Abigail Hadlock.  He bequeathed five shillings to each of them.  He also bequeaths money to his grandson, John Hadlock, certainly a son of his daughter Abigail.  He did not mention son George Martin (1648-1734) for some reason (perhaps he was not a "natural" child?).

George and Hannah (LNU) Martin are my 9th great-grandparents.  I am descended through their daughter, Hannah (Martin) Wathen (1643-1730) who married Ezekiel Wathen (1536-1716) in 1661  resided in Salisbury, Massachusetts.
