Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Are You Writing Your Personal History?

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along - cue the Mission Impossible music!):

1)  Are you writing about your own personal history?  What are you including?  How are you doing with it?  Who will you distribute it to?

2)  Write your own blog post, or leave a comment on this post, or write something on Facebook.

Here's mine:

*  I wrote an autobiography about 10 years ago and updated it in 2022 after my heart bypass operation.  I included chapters about my close family, my childhood, my education and youth, early adulthood, my "real" work life, DXing, genealogy, computers, married life and the future.  It's only 22 pages single spaced.  I passed it to my daughters after I updated it.  I probably need to update it some more.

*  I have yearly Christmas letters since 1983 about our family life, vacations, health, and activities.  The earliest I have in digital form is 1994 so I need to digitize the earlier years.  A project is to put them all into an ebook of some sort and distribute it to my daughters and grandchildren.

*  My daughters gave me a StoryWorth subscription for Christmas last year and I have written 31 stories so far, but none in the last 3-4 months it seems.  I need to write a few more and get them in some semblance of order, so that they can be published in book form at the end of the year.  There is a page count limit and I think I'm near it.

*  The Genea-Musings blog has over 16,700 posts in it, written since 2006.  Many of them are about family photographs, collected ephemera, ancestor biographies, etc.  Another future project is to collect the family photos into an ebook of some sort and provide it to my daughters and grandchildren.

*  Then there is the genealogy and family history collection.  I wrote a number of ebooks about my ancestral families and descendants of selected ancestors back in 2012 using Family Tree Maker and posted them on Scribd.  I included only name, date, place and relationship data with source citation, but without  Notes or Media.  They are outdated now, so another project is to update them and put them on Scribd.  The genealogy work will never be finished, I think.

I look forward to seeing what my SNGF friends come up with - perhaps there will be more ideas to work on.

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to   https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

My 2nd Great-Grandfather Sold Hair Tonic

My second great-grandfather, Devier James "D.J." Lamphier Smith (1839-1894), the adopted son of Ranslow and Mary (Bell) Smith, was a man of many talents an occupation.  Among them was livery man, land speculator, horse trader, and as a hair tonic (or "snake oil" if you prefer) salesman.

Here is an article from the McCook [Neb.] Tribune newspaper dated Friday, 12 January 1894, page 5, column 6:

A transcription:

"Notice.

"To you and your friends that wish new hair grown on bald heads.  Call on D.J. Smith, as he will guarantee to grow new hair on bald heads on any person that has been bald from 1 to 30 years, for $50 to $300.  P.S. -- He will sell you the medicine for $30, with full instructions how to use it.  All consultations strictly confidential.  DEVIER J. SMITH, McCook, Nebraska.

"D.J.S.

"The Wonderful Wonder of the World has reached the top round of the ladder of success in the short time it has been used, and many bald heads are already taking on nice coats of hair.  Call on D.J. Smith at McCook for particulars and terms."

I also have an advertisement that was in the family papers handed down to me from my grandparents and my mother:

The advertisement says "only" $2 a bottle, but the newspaper article says for $30.  I wonder how successful he was?

A source citation for the newspaper article:

"Notice.,” McCook [Neb.] Tribune newspaper, Friday, 12 January 1894, page 5, column 6, Devier J. Smith article; digital image, accessed on GenealogyBank (https://www.genealogybank.com : accessed 30 October 2023).

Now you know why I think that Devier James Lamphier Smith (Lamphier is is birth surname according to a name change record and his adoptive father's will) is one of my favorite, and most interesting ancestors.

Treasure Chest Thursday - 1750 Marriage of William Noade and Grace Crabb in Staverton, Wiltshire

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - a chance to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1750 marriage entry for William Noade and Grace Crabb in the Staverton, Wiltshire parish records:

The marriage entry is the first entry in the list for 1750:

The transcription of this record is::

1750   William Noade & Grace Crabb was marred Septm'ber y'e 27

The source citation for this record is:

"Wiltshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812," indexed database with record images, Ancestry.com (https://www.ancestry.com), Staverton, "Parish Registers, 1673-1712," image 70 of 106, William Noade and Grace Crabb marriage entry, 27 September 1750; Original data: Wiltshire Church of England Parish Registers, Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, Chippenham, Wiltshire, England.

This is an entry in the Staverton, Wiltshire parish register.  It is an Original Source with Primary Information and Direct Evidence of the marriage of William Noade and Grace Crabb on 27 September 1750 in Staverton.  William Noade (c1728-????) was the probably son of Stephen and Rebecca (Tanner) Noad of Trowbridge, Wiltshire, and Grace Crabb (1728-1769) was the daughter of Joseph and Grace (Cox) Crabb of Trowbridge.

William Noad (c1728-????) and Grace Crabb (1728-1769) are my 5th great-grandparents; they had at least 7 children, including my 4th great-grandmother Betty Noad (1767-1814) who married William Rich (1766-1835) in 1788 in Trowbridge.
