In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to  https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

My friend, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED.  Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link).  It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Where Were You in 2000?

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans: 

 It's Saturday Night again - 

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment if you choose to play along (cue the Mission Impossible music, please!):

1)  Do you recall what you were doing in 2000?  Family, school, work, hobbies, technology, genealogy, vacations, etc?  If this doesn't work for you, what about your parents?

2)  Tell us in a blog post of your own, in a comment on this blog, or in a Facebook post.

Here's mine:

In 2000, I was 57 years old, and worked at Goodrich Aerospace (the Rohr Industries company in Chula Vista was bought by Goodrich in 1997) as an Aero/Thermo Staff Engineer.  I didn't travel much for work in 2000, and was eyeing retirement after 33 years.  Linda was teaching 5th grade at Montgomery Elementary School in Chula Vista.  She went almost every day to swim at the fitness center, did the shopping, and had several angel hunting trips to Temecula with friends.  We enjoyed being with friends and family, the church fellowship group, attending Padres games, the Lamb’s Player Theatre in Coronado, and the Shadow Mountain Saturday Night concert series.   

My genealogy efforts were in the evenings and on the weekends.  I went to the Family History Center in Mission Valley almost every Saturday to order and view microfilms, but also had several trips during the year to the SDGS and Carlsbad libraries.  I had a Windows PC with a cable modem in 2000, and worked on the Internet to find distant cousins on message boards, mailing lists and the genealogy forums at About.com (a social media network).  I finally subscribed to Ancestry.com in 2000.  I was using Family Tree Maker (probably version 10 or so?) for my family tree and was entering data from all of the paper I had collected since 1988.


Our big event for 2000 was the wedding of our oldest daughter, Lori, to Michael on 30 September 2000 in Brookdale, California.  They bought a small home nestled in the redwood trees about 10 miles north (up highway 9) of Santa Cruz.  Their pride and joy is a 10 month old cat named Mira (our grand-kitty), who is a lot of fun!  

The wedding was outdoors in their back yard – in an amphitheater setting, seating about 60 people.  It was a beautiful and joyous day.  The beautiful bride rode into the amphitheater on her boss’s horse, and walked down the aisle with her father to be wed.  Their mothers reflected on their lives and personalities before the vows. After the ceremony, a champagne reception was held at their house, followed by a wonderful dinner and reception at the Brookdale Lodge.  Lori and Michael went to Hawaii for their honeymoon.

Daughter Tami and her husband James were married in 1997, and in 2000 were renting a small house in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach CA.  Tami was in her second year as an English teacher at West Covina High School.  She was her sister’s matron of honor.  They enjoy their new home and being “parents” of Walter, a 9 month old basset hound.  Walter is a svelte 52 pounds and growing, loves to snuggle, takes Tami and James for walks to the beach and to the main avenue, where he is a chick magnet.  We visited Tami and James new home in Long Beach in June and met our grand-puppy, and visited several more times in Long Beach.

We enjoyed a two week vacation in the Pacific Northwest in late July and early August.  We flew into Seattle, and spent time sightseeing and visiting with friends and Leland cousins, including a family get-together.  Then it was off to Vancouver for two days of sightseeing, followed by a seven day Alaska cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam of the Holland America line.  The ship stopped in Ketchikan, Juneau and Sitka, with visits to Glacier Bay and College Fjord, ending up in Seward, Alaska.  We took a helicopter visit to the Mendenhall glacier outside of Juneau, which was cool.  We took an observation train to Anchorage, did some sightseeing there, and flew home.  The cruise was relaxing and interesting, the scenery was spectacular, and our table mates were friendly and fun.  


Three young ladies from Finland (the 2000 Olympic Shopping Team) came to stay with us for a week in early November, and endured election night with many questions.  Mia (one of our exchange students in 1994), Milla and Ulla went to Washington state to do research for their Master’s degree program.  They were here during the election, did some sightseeing and shopping, helped out in Linda’s classroom, and brightened our lives considerably!  They returned to Finland via Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and Dallas.  

We were able to see Linda's brother and father in San Jose on our trips to see Lori, and we took my mother shopping and sightseeing around Point Loma.  I spent some time with her looking over old photographs and trying to get her to talk about her life.  We got together with my mother and brothers on most of the holidays we were home.

So, 30 years of marriage, 25 years in our house, 33 years at Rohr/Goodrich, two married daughters but no grandchildren yet - but hope was springing eternal!

After the death of Robert Keyes in 1647, Sarah (LNU) Keyes married (2) John Gage (1606-1672) in 1658 in Ipswich, Massachusetts.  They had no children.

I don't have an clues as to the maiden name of Sarah (LNU) (Keyes) Gage.

Scotland, Glasgow & Lanarkshire Death & Burial Index

Over 37,000 records have been added to the Glasgow & Lanarkshire Death & Burial Index. These new additions cover Bent Cemetery in Hamilton and consist of transcripts of original documents that will reveal a combination of your ancestors' birth year, death and burial dates, age at death, burial place and mortcloth price.

United States, Passenger and Crew Lists

Over 777,000 new records from the major port city of Baltimore in Maryland have recently been added to these passenger and crew lists.

This national collection brings together records of passengers and crew who arrived in America by ship or by plane from the East Coast to the West Coast and will reveal where your ancestor was born, where they sailed from, where they arrived and when.

Middlesex Monumental Inscriptions

Over 5,000 additional records are now available to search. The new records cover two cemeteries in Teddington as well as the Parish of St Mary's in Sunbury.

Monumental Inscriptions can reveal the names of others buried in that plot as well as more specific details regarding age, birth and death dates. This can be incredibly helpful as it can provide you with the names and dates of your ancestor's next of kin, including their relation to one another.
