Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - Your Favorite Summer Memory

 It's Saturday Night -

time for more Genealogy Fun!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible music here) is to:

1)  What is your favorite summer memory?  [Thank you to Linda Stufflebean for suggesting topics!]

2)  Write your own blog post, or add your response as a comment to this blog post, in a Facebook Status post or note.

Here's mine:

My favorite summer memory is going to the San Diego beaches!!!  As a teenager aged 13-16, going to the beach with my buddies was the best part of a San Diego summer.  The water was cool (65F to 70F), the air temperatures were reasonable (70F to 80F), and the waves were relatively small - 2-4 feet - just the right size for bodysurfing.  We usually went to Mission Beach, which also had Belmont Park amusement park with a big roller coaster and food, plus the Olympic-sized swimming pool.  And there were plenty of girls and young ladies to watch when we were sunning ourselves on our towels on the sand.  We usually hitchhiked to the beach from the top of Texas Street hill (which goes down into Mission Valley, which had a road - now a freeway - that went to the beach area) because none of us had a drivers license.  Sometimes, a buddy's parents would drive us.  We tried to go every weekend when I was a teenager.

When Linda and I had children, we would usually go to Silver Strand beach on the ocean side of the road from Imperial Beach to Coronado.  I body surfed there too, watched my girls in the water, and we built sandcastles on the shore.

The drawback to the beach was the sunburn. I had short blonde/brownish hair, blue eyes, and often came home with a very red back, head, arms and legs.  I now have pre-cancerous spots on my head, arms and back and yearly the dermatologist has to freeze them off.

=======================================================

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category.  Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

In order to select a specific record collection on FamilySearch, go to https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list and use the "Filter by collection name" feature in the upper left-hand corner and use keywords (e.g. "church england") to find collections with those keywords.

Each one of the collections listed above has a Research Wiki page (use the "Learn more" link). It would be very useful if the Wiki page for each collection listed the dates for when the collection was added as a new collection and the dates for major updates also.

Findmypast Friday: Explore 268,000 New Military Records

 I received this information from Findmypast today:

                  ===========================================

From pension records to honour rolls, here's everything that's new on Findmypast this week.

The focus is on military records this Findmypast Friday. Here’s  a rundown of our latest releases.

A brand new collection, these honour recommendations comprise over 79,000 records and cover 55 years from the Second World War onwards. The majority of these records are, of course, for the British Army and dominions armies personnel. However, dotted around you'll also find some Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and Royal Air Force records, as well as decorations exchanged between British and Allied armies. Each transcription will give you a name, as well as rank, regiment, and corps where available. You will also find the context of the recommendation

Britain, Campaign, Gallantry & Long Service Medals & Awards

Findmypast has added another 52,000 new records to this collection, bringing the total up to an immense 6.3 million. These new additions are for the Long Service Good Conduct Medal, India General Service Medal Pegu (Army) 1852-1853, and India General Service Medal Pegu (Navy) 1852-1853.

British Royal Navy & Royal Marines Service and Pension Records, 1704-1919

Findmypast has also released nearly 20,000 new additions to this collection. All of these new records feature men who joined the Royal Navy in 1810. The information for each record will vary, but you may find details such as the year the pension was granted, military discharge year, length of service, and more. Where available, it's also worth checking the original image in this collection, as it may contain extra comments written about your ancestor.

British Army Lists & Commission Registers 1661-1826

The largest addition of the week is the new British Army Lists & Commission Registers collection, with over 118,000 records. They span from 1661 until 1826. They will usually give you a full name, a regiment and rank, and an event date - which tends to be the date that the officer was commissioned.

Newspapers

Findmypast have three new newspapers from Bromley, one from London, and updates to 16 existing titles this week. Here's a full rundown.

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

Sarah --?-- was born in about 1659 to unknown parents.  She is named as the first wife of Jonathan Thurston in several references, including the book by Carl Boyer 3rd, Ancestral Lines, Third Edition[1], and the book Little Compton Families[2].  The Boyer book says:  "He married his wife Sarah in about 1678.  It has been suggested that she was a member of the Giles family, but Vinton's work has disclosed no foundation for this idea."

Many online family trees indicate that Jonathan Thurston married Sarah Guile (1657-1724) of Haverhill, Massachusetts.  However, that Sarah Guile is probably the woman who married Peter Pattee in 1682 in  Haverhill, had eight Pattee children,  and lived her full life in Haverhill.  The Jonathan Thurston family were Quakers who resided in Little Compton, Rhode Island.  There may be another Sarah Guile who was in Rhode Island in the 1660-1720 time frame, and she may be the first or second wife of Jonathan Thurston, but there are no records of her.

Sarah --?-- married to Jonathan Thurston in about 1678 as his first wife, probably in Little Compton, Rhode Island.  They had about fifteen children, all of whom were born and recorded in Little Compton records[1-2]:

*  Edward Thurston (1679-1739), married (1) 1706 Susanna Pearce (1688-1711); (2) 1712 Sarah Carr (1685-????).
*  Elizabeth Thurston (1682-1717), married 1703 Jonathan Wood (1680-1759).
*  Mary Thurston (1685-1740), married 1706 George Brownell (1682-1756).
*  Jonathan Thurston (1687-1749), married (1) 1722 Phrby Holmes (16094-2734); (2) 1734 Mehetable Claghorn (1708-1745).
*  Rebecca Thurston (1689-1735), married 1711 Edward Richmond (1689-1741).
*  Content Thurston (1691-????), married 1715 Henry Wood (1683-1758).
*  Sarah Thurston (1693-????), married 1712 Benjamin Sawdy (1689-1745).
*  John Thurston (1695-1735).
*  Eleanor Thurston (1696-????), married 1716 Peters (1690-????).
*  Hope Thurston (1698-1716).
*  Abigail Thurston (1700-1770), married 1729 William White (1708-b1780).
*  Patience Thurston (1702-????), married 1723 Thomas Southworth (1694-1735).
*  Amey Thurston (1705-????).
*  Peleg Thurston (1706-????).
*  Jeremiah Thurston (1710-????).

There are no death or burial records for Sarah --?-- Thurston, who died in about 1711, probably in Little Compton, Rhode Island after the birth of her 15th child in 32 years at about age 52. Jonathan married a second Sarah --?-- in about 1712 and had at least three more children by her.   It is not likely that Jonathan had just one wife named Sarah, since the last child born was in 1717, when a first Sarah would have been about 58 years old.
