Best of the Genea-Blogs - 29 November to 5 December 2015

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

* How Long Does It Take to Do It Right? by Michele Simmons Lewis on the Ancestoring blog.  In Legacy Family Tree, it took Michele 22 minutes to find, save, and work through an 1830 U.S. Census record.

*  The Ins and Outs of Social Media for Genealogists by Shannon Combs Bennett on The In-Depth Genealogist blog.  Shannon reviews many of the available social media sites used by genealogists.

*  Tombstones and Cemeteries: Overlooked Genealogical Goldmines by Frederick Wertz on the Mocavo Genealogy Blog.  Frederick discusses what you can find in these records and artifacts.

* England Trip Report, Day 2; Day 3; Day 4;  Day 5; Day 6 by Caleb Johnson on Caleb Johnson's MayflowerHistory.com blog.  Caleb has been visiting Mayflower pilgrim towns and churches in England.

*  Library Trip Awards by Michael John Neill on the Rootdig.com blog.  Michael is creative here.  Now we need some online search awards too.

*  Printing a Book From Google Books by Diane Boumenot on the One Rhode Island Family blog.  Diane describes the process.

*  At the Right Place at the Right Time: Meet the Fonkerts by Jay Fonkert on the Four Generations Genealogy blog.  Jay relates how he met some Dutch Fonkert distant relatives.

*  Letter to Grandma, 2015 by Caitlin Gow on the Genealogically Speaking blog.  A beautiful letter from Caitlin to the grandma that sparked her genealogical interest.

*  Ancestor Wall of Photos - Here's How I Did It by Diane Gould Hall on the Michigan Family Trails blog.  Diane shares the process and result of her handiwork.

*  The Way Things Look by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy demonstrates that different images of the same record may really help us out.

*  Five Reasons We Can't Find the Records We Want by Elizabeth Shown Mills on the Evidence Explained QuickTips blog.  An excellent read here.

*  Clutter-Free Gifts for the Genealogists on Your List by Janine Adams on the Organize Your Family History blog.  There are some great ideas on this list.

*  December in the FHL by Dave Mcdonald on the Thinking Genealogically blog.  Dave had a day at the FHL, found a key record, and teaches us a lesson.
