Seavers in the News - Walter H. Seaver's Probate Notice

It's time for another exciting episode in the uplifting "Seavers in the News" series.

Today, I found the death notice for Walter H. Seaver in the Oakland Tribune newspaper, dated 19 July 1930:

The article transcription is:

"WIFE INHERITS MATE'S ESTATE

"Mrs. Grace Whittemore Seaver, widow of Walter H. Seaver, Berkeley, and San Francisco business executive, is sole legatee of the $100,000 estate, according to a will filed for probate today in the Alameda county superior court.

"Seaver was departmental representative of the United States Steel corporation and died July 15 at the age of 59 years.

"He is survived by his widow and daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Seaver Campbell of Honolulu, and a son, Talcott Whittemore Seaver of 921 Ensenada ave., Berkeley."

The source citation for this record is:

"WIFE INHERITS MATE'S ESTATE," The Oakland [Calif.] Tribune, 19 July 1930, page B4, column 4, Walter H. Seaver probate article; digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 8 December 2016).

Walter Hibbard Seaver was born 5 August 1870 in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, and died 13 July 1930 in Berkeley, California, the son of Charles Morse and Susan (Hibbard) Seaver.  He married (1) Gertrude Nelson on 9 March 1897 in Newton, Massachusetts on 9 June 1897 in Newton, but she died on 15 December 1898 in Newton.  He married (2) Grace Whittemore on 14 June 1901 in Newton, the daughter of Samson D. and Anna Gertrude (Child) Whittemore.  Grace (Whittemore) Seaver died 13 January 1961 in Santa Clara County, California.  Walter and Grace had three children - Gertrude Seaver (1902-1945), Talcott Whittemore Seaver (1903-1959) and Barbara Seaver (1910-1997).

The article mentions only daughter Gertrude and son Talcott, not daughter Barbara for some reason.  Gertrude Seaver married James White Campbell (1903-1966) in 1926, they both died in Hawaii, and they had two children.  Talcott Whittemore Seaver married Genevieve K. Weber (1903-1986), and they had two children.  Barbara Seaver married Howard Baldwin Crittenden (1908-1986) in 1931.

Based on the article's mention of Gertrude's married name, I was able to find Find A Grave memorials for her and her husband which included their birth dates and death dates.

Walter Hibbard Seaver was my 6th cousin 4 times removed.  Now I have a bit more information about this man and this family.  He was fairly wealthy for 1930.  Every little bit helps!

There are 1,433 entries for Seaver in the Oakland Tribune between 1895 and 1977, but not all years or issues are provided in this Ancestry.com database.
