Carringers in the News -- Joseph A. Carringer Dies in 1919 in Pennsylvania

 It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from The Record-Argus [Greenville, Penn.] newspaper dated 15 March 1919:

The transcription of the article is:

"Joseph A. Carringer

"Joseph A. Carringer, who had been ill since October, died Wednesday morning at his home in Parker avenue, Rocky Grove.  He was born on April 14,1848, and would have been 71 years old next month.

"Mr. Carringer was born in Deercreek township, Mercer county, but has been a resident of Franklin for the past 20 years.  He was a member of the Rocky Grove Evangelical church and up to the time his health failed he was an employe of the Franklin Manufacturing Co.

"Besides his wife, Mr. Carringer leaves the following children: O.M. of Sandy Lake; W.E. of Franklin; Mrs. Wilbur Baker, of Cleveland; Mrs. Howard Cain, of Canada; Mrs. Harley L. Bell, of Prospect Park, Franklin, and Miss Jennie, of Greenville.  He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Roberts, of Sheakleyville."

Joseph A. Carringer died 12 March 1919 in Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania.  The obituary provides a birth date, but not the names of his parents, or his wife's name.  It does provide the names of his living children, although three of the daughters are married.

Joseph Alexander Carringer (1848-1919) was born 14 April 1848 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, the eldest son of Joseph and Sarah Ann (Williams) Carringer.  He married Esther Louise King (1850-1924) in about 1872, and they had seven children:

*  Otis Monroe Carringer (1872-1942), married 1895 Cynthia Jane Turner (1879-1948).

*  William Earl Carringer (1875-1948), married 1898 Fanny Bertha Latshaw (1876-1962).

*  Jessie Ann Carringer (1879-1953), married (1) 1896 Harry Walter Hale (1877-1909); (2) before 1919 Wilbur A. Baker (1882-????).

*  Clara J. Carringer (1882-1960), married (1) 1898 William Alonzo Evans (1873-1957); (2) 1905 Howard Washington Holtzworth (1869-1947); (3) before 1919 Howard Cain (1869-????).

*  Estella Mae Carringer (1885-1966), married 1905 Harley Lee Bell (1884-1955).

*  Jennie A. Carringer (1887-????).

*  James Martin Carringer (1891-1911).

I am a second cousin three times removed to  Joseph A. Carringer.  Our common ancestors are my 4th great-grandparents Martin Carringer (1758-1835) and Maria Magdalena Hoax (1768-1851). 

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person suffers a lingering death and leaves a large family.  I am glad that I can honor Joseph Alexander Carringer today.  

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
