Best of the Genea-Blogs - 30 December 2012 to 5 January 2013

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.
My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for the genealogy carnivals, or other meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Best of 2012 Genealogy Education Blog Posts by Angela Packer McGhie on the Adventures in Genealogy Education blog.  Angela highlights ten posts from 2012 that are on point.

*  Noteworthy Blogs for 2013 by the writer of the Digging in the Roots blog.  Here is a list of genealogy blogs to read in 2013 (Thanks for the kind words!).

*  Online United States Birth, Marriage and Death Records by Nathan Murphy on the FamilySearch Blog.  Here are links to all of the online vital records in the United States.  This is a must-have link!

*  2012 - A Very Good Year by Jill Ball on the Geniaus blog.  Jill captures the responses to her Accentuate the Positive 2012 Geneameme.

*  2012 in Review by Dick Eastman on Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter.  Dick summarizes the high points in genealogy history for 2012.

*  GeneAwards 2012 by Tamura Jones on the Modern Software Experience blog.  The Best of 2012 and Worst of 2012 are named by Tamura.

*  Tracing Back to Sally Hughes by Twila Barnes on the Thoughts from Polly's Granddaughter blog.  Twila shows her evidence trail through Cherokee and American records back to her Cherokee 6th great-grandmother.  I love research stories, and this one shows how Native ancestry can be traced, at least for certain tribes.

*  How do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? by GeneJ on the They Came Before blog.  What a fascinating puzzle.  An entry in German script analyzed one character at a time...

*  Ancestry.com Discloses 2013 Plans by the writer of The Ancestry Insider blog.  Mr. Insider has inside information and shares it with us.

*  Protecting Your Digital World - Part 1 by Denise Barrett Olson on the Moultrie Creek Gazette blog.  Denise has excellent advice for all of us.  Do this for yourself!

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

*  Ruth's Recommendations by Ruth Blair on The Passionate Genealogist blog.

*  Monday Recap for December 31, 2012 by Amanda on the Geni Blog.

*  Follow Friday - Fab Finds for January 4, 2013 by Jana Last on Jana's Genealogy and family History Blog.

*  Motivation, Inspiration, It's Follow Friday! by Anne Mitchell on the Finding Forgotten Stories blog.
*  Friday Finds - 01/04/13 by Julie Cahill Tarr on the GenBlog blog.

*  From the Blogs, January 4 by Michael Leclerc on the Mocavo Genealogy Blog.

*  Genealogy Blogs, News and Tidbits #1 by Deb Ruth on the Adventures in Genealogy blog.

*  Weekly Genealogy Picks: Dec. 30 - Jan. 5 by John Newmark on the TransylvanianDutch blog.

I encourage readers to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Google Reader, RSS feed or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1300 genealogy bloggers using Google Reader, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

Thank you for the mention. Some day, I'd like to know how you keep up with so many blogs (I have a hard time keeping up with the three dozen or so I follow)...but we appreciate your good work!

What a great start to the year. Thanks, Randy, for including the Geneameme on your list. Thanks to the genealogists who have taken part and shared their wonderful stories.

I would love to hear from more of your readers and grow the list you have highlighted.

A spike in the stats bar can only mean one thing . . . Thank you for including the Gazette in this week's best. You've made my day!
