Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Five Questions For An Ancestor

 Calling all Genea-Musings Fans: 

 It's Saturday Night again - 

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible! music) is to:

1)  If you could go back in time to interview one of your ancestors, what questions would you ask him or her?  Tell us your selected ancestor's name, their birth and death years/locations, and their spouse's name and marriage date/location.  List at least five questions to ask that selected ancestor.

2)  Tell us about your selected ancestor and your questions for them in a blog post of your own, in a comment to this blog post, or in a Facebook comment.

Here's mine:

My selected ancestor is my third great-grandfather Samuel Vaux (1816 in Somerset to 1880 in Kansas), who married Mary Ann Underhill in 1837 in New York.  

My questions are (I have six...):

• What do you recall of your home and family living in South Petherton, Somerset?  Where was it located, what was the house like, who was in your family?  What were your chores, education, friends, entertainment, and fun experiences. 
• Tell me a story about migrating from England to New York in 1832 on a sailing ship with your family - discuss the trip, the quarters, the food, the landing, and ground travel to and from the ship.
• What advice and wisdom did your father (or mother) give you about selecting a wife, marriage relations, family traditions, being a husband and father, etc.
• Why did you move from Aurora, New York to Dodge County, Wisconsin in 1854, to Andrew County, Missouri in 1867, and to Kansas in 1880?
• What was the hardest work you ever performed, and what was the most satisfying and rewarding work?
• When and where were you the most happy and content, and when and where were you the most fearful and worried?  Why?

In Search of the Perfect Genealogical Sketch - Updated!

Do you want to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) Large Language Model (LLM) Tools to help you write family stories about your own life or the lives of your ancestors, but you don't have any stories, or even research material?  To create a complete and accurate family story about a historical person using an AI tool, you need research material in the form of a "genealogical sketch" or "research report" as a text or PDF document. You can do it yourself (best choice) or rely on the work of other researchers (risky, but possible).  

Whether or not you have done genealogical research, or use a genealogy management desktop software program, there are ways to create a genealogical sketch for a historical person.  

I wrote In Search Of the Perfect Genealogical Sketch six months ago.  It highlighted one way to create a genealogical sketch in PDF format from an Ancestry Member Tree profile that could be provided to an AI LLM tool to create a readable biography of a historical person. That works for my own tree, and also for Ancestry Member Trees of other Ancestry.com users.

Here are some other options if you don't have an Ancestry Member Tree:

1)  If you use a genealogy management desktop software program like RootsMagic, Family Tree Maker, Legacy Family Tree, etc., it can take your historical person profile in the program and provide a Narrative Report that includes your event data (birth, marriage, death, census, military, immigration, land, probate, etc.), your person notes, your fact notes, your source citations, etc. for your historical person.  A Timeline report, an Individual Person report, a Descendants report, or an Ancestors report can perform a similar task.

Note that it adds Notes (if requested), sources (if requested), an index (if requested), etc.  The above is page 1 of a 21 page report imported into a word processor.  I used reports like this to create my genealogical sketches that are in my 52 Ancestors series.

The publishing capabilities of other genealogy management programs are somewhat different than the RootsMagic format, so test your program out and see how well it produces a genealogy narrative report for your historical person. It may be "good enough."  

2)  If you have a MyHeritage family tree online, you can Copy the information on the "Profile" page of the historical person and Paste it into a word processor document and save it as a PDF.  Alternatively, you could use a tool like the Print Friendly Chrome Extension to create a PDF of the entire "Profile" page (15 pages) for Henry Carringer.  

However, neither method captures the Sources, and the result captures all of the characters on the website page, not just the persons, events, and notes. 

3)  MyHeritage has an "AI Biography" feature that can create a relatively short biography of your historical person based on the information in the person's profile. Here is the first page of Henry Carringer's AI Biography:

This provides the list of relatives, a short biography, historical context, last name origins, consistency issues, and source citations (to MyHeritage, FamilySearch and Geni trees).

4)  If you find a profile for your historical person of interest on the FamilySearch Family Tree, you can Copy the information on the "Details" page and Paste it into a word processor document and save it as a PDF.  Alternatively, you could use a tool like the Print Friendly Chrome Extension to create a PDF of the entire "Details" page.  However, neither method captures the Sources, and the result captures all of the typing on the website page, not just the persons, events, and notes. 

5)  FamilySearch Family Tree has an AI Research Assistant that can be used to create a short biography of the historical person.  Here is the top of the biography for Henry Carringer by the AI Research Assistant:

The resulting biography is fairly skimpy and would need significant editing to be useful as a genelaogical sketch.

6)  If your historical person has a profile in WikiTree, then you can use the  tool like the Print Friendly Chrome Extension to create a PDF of the entire "Family" page.  Here is the top of Henry Carringer's WikiTree page saved as a PDF:

This includes the information about the historical person, links to his relatives, and the Notes and Sources provided by the submitters.  It would need significant editing to be useful as a genealogical sketch.

7)  There may be genealogical sketches of your historical person on websites, in published books or periodical articles.  When you find them online, download the book or article as a PDF, and then capture the sketch of the historical person and transcribe it (by typing it, or by using an image to have an AI tool transcribe it). Then save your transcription as a PDF file.

8)  If you don't have an online tree or a genealogy management program, use a word processor to document the names, relationships, events, records, notes, sources, etc. that you have found and saved for the historical person.  Save it as a PDF file.

There is no "PERFECT" genealogical sketch.  Do the best you can with the information you have and the tools that you have on hand.

ABC Biography of #50 Daniel Spangler (1781-1851) of Pennsylvania and Virginia

  Using the ABC method described in Using Artificial Intelligence In the Ancestor Biography Creation (ABC) Process, here is another ancestor biography using the Anthropic Claude Sonnet 4 AI tool.

1) I wrote genealogical sketches for almost every known ancestor back through 9 generations in blog posts based on 38 years of genealogical research in my 52 Ancestors/Relatives Biographies series. The genealogical sketch for my 3rd great-grandfather, Daniel Spangler (1781-1851), #50 on my Ahnentafel List), including family members, record abstracts and sources, is 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - Week 43: #50 Daniel Spangler (1781-1851).

2) For the Claude AI biography, I attached the PDF of the genealogical sketch for the specific ancestor using the plus (+) icon, and then prompted the AI tool with: "You are an expert genealogist. Please create a biography based on information in the attached file for Daniel Spangler (1781-1851). Include parents, siblings, spouses and children (with birth and death dates and places). Summarize life events, and add historical facts as appropriate, but do not add or embellish any extra genealogical details. Use section headings. Expand the information in each section to add more details. The tone should be engaging and suitable for family members."

Marriage and New Beginnings

On March 12, 1815, at the age of 33, Daniel married Elizabeth Koenig (also known as King) at Trinity Reformed Church in York—the same church where he had been baptized over three decades earlier. Elizabeth, whose family had also been part of the German community in York County, would prove to be a devoted partner through the many moves and challenges that lay ahead.

The marriage took place during the post-War of 1812 period, when America was experiencing renewed confidence and westward expansion. This spirit of opportunity and adventure would soon influence the young couple's decisions about their future.

Daniel and Elizabeth were blessed with ten children born between 1816 and 1841, though two died in infancy. Their eight surviving children, all daughters, went on to establish their own families and spread across the growing nation:

Anna Katrina Spangler (1816-1816) was born on 22 February 1816 in York, York County, Pennsylvania. and died in infancy after 12 July 1816.

Anna Maria Spangler (1818-1869) married Joseph Carringer around 1835 and had eight children. She eventually settled in Union, Hardin County, Iowa, representing the family's continued westward migration.  

Henry K. Spangler (1820-1820) was born in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia, and died in infancy.   

Elizabeth Spangler (1822-1884) married Benjamin Robinson around 1843 and raised five children, ultimately settling in Somonauk, DeKalb County, Illinois. 

Sarah Elizabeth Spangler (1824-1864) married John Montgomery Carringer on November 2, 1843, in Sheakleyville, Mercer County. Their five children kept the family rooted in Pennsylvania until her death in 1864. 

Dorothea Matilda Spangler (1827-1891) married William E. McKnight around 1849. She would eventually move as far west as Boulder, Colorado, where she died in 1891—a remarkable journey for a woman of her era. 

Helen A. Spangler (1831-1905) married James Brown on November 28, 1850, and raised four children, remaining in Pennsylvania throughout her long life. 

Rebecca Spangler (1832-1901) married David Jackson Carringer on October 16, 1851, and had three children. She made the most dramatic geographical leap of any of Daniel's children, eventually dying in San Diego, California—a testament to the era's westward expansion.

Return to Pennsylvania (1829-1851)

In 1829, the Spangler family made another significant move, this time returning to Pennsylvania and settling in Sandy Creek township, Mercer County. This relocation was facilitated by a remarkable family arrangement: on April 22, 1828, the living heirs of Rudolf and Dorothea Spangler sold Donation Lot No. 929—a 200-acre tract that Rudolf had purchased in 1806—to Daniel for the symbolic sum of $1, with the condition that he settle on the land within two years.

This generous family gesture provided Daniel with substantial property and the opportunity to establish himself as a farmer in western Pennsylvania. Mercer County, formed in 1800, was still developing its agricultural potential, and Daniel's 200 acres represented a significant foundation for his family's future.

Life as a Pennsylvania Farmer

The 1830 and subsequent censuses reveal Daniel as an established farmer in Sandy Creek township. By 1850, at age 68, he owned real estate worth $1,500—a considerable sum that reflected years of hard work and successful farming. The family was often enumerated near the Carringer family, suggesting close community ties that would later be formalized through marriages.

Daniel's household during these years was bustling with activity. The 1850 census shows not only his immediate family but also additional household members, including his son-in-law Elliott McKnight and daughter Matilda McKnight, reflecting the extended family arrangements common in rural 19th-century America.

Final Years and Legacy

Daniel Spangler died on July 19, 1851, in Georgetown, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, at the age of 69. He was buried in Sheakleyville Cemetery in Sandy Creek township, Mercer County, near the land he had farmed for over two decades.

Having died intestate, his estate went through probate court proceedings that revealed both his success and the challenges of frontier farming. His sons-in-law Benjamin Robinson and John M. Carringer served as administrators of his estate, highlighting the close family relationships that had developed through intermarriage with local families like the Carringers.

To settle debts and provide for the maintenance and education of his minor children (Rebecca, Louisa, and Margaret Jane), 100 acres of his 200-acre farm were sold to John Waugh for $500 in December 1851. This practical decision ensured that his younger children would be properly cared for and educated.

Elizabeth survived her husband by nearly twelve years, dying on March 18, 1863, in Conneautville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where she was buried in Conneautville Cemetery.

Historical Context and Significance

Daniel Spangler's life spanned a remarkable period in American history. Born just five years after the Declaration of Independence, he lived through the early republic's growing pains, the War of 1812, and the great westward expansion that would define the 19th century. His family's migrations—from Pennsylvania to Virginia and back to Pennsylvania—reflected the mobility and opportunity-seeking spirit that characterized American families of his era.

The Spangler family's experience also illustrates the gradual assimilation of German immigrant families into American society, from the Germanic "Spengler" of Daniel's birth records to the anglicized "Spangler" used by most family members in their adult years.

Most significantly, Daniel's legacy lived on through his children and their families, who spread from Pennsylvania to Iowa, Illinois, Colorado, and California, embodying the westward expansion that would define America through the remainder of the 19th century. Through careful stewardship of the family land and wise marriages within the local community, Daniel Spangler successfully transitioned his family from recent immigrants to established American farmers, leaving a foundation that would support generations to come.

My friend and SDGS colleague, Marshall, has come up with a way to determine which collections are ADDED, DELETED or UPDATED, and to alphabetize the entries in each category. Thanks to Marshall for helping me out here!

Marshall notes that there are:

• 72 removed entries
• 2  added entries 
• 25 updated entries
• 9 entries with more or fewer images 
• 111 entries with more or fewer records

The FamilySearch website says there are 3,413 total entries on the list (after signing in). Marshall's list says there are 3,413 (after signing in).  They are definitely in-sync this week.

There are now 4,309  searchable image collections on FamilySearch Full-Text Search this week, an increase of 152 from last week. It is not possible to see which collections are new.

There are now 26,727 browsable image collections on FamilySearch Images this week, an increase of 1 from last week. It is not possible to see which collections are new.
