Best of the Genea-Blogs - 6 to 12 January 2013

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.
My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for the genealogy carnivals, or other meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  In Loving Memory of Joan Miller - Genetic Genealogist, Blogger, and Dear Friend by CeCe Moore on the Your Genetic Genealogist blog.  Thank you, CeCe for your wonderful tribute to a truly beautiful person.

*  Who Belongs on the Family Tree? by Kirsty Wilkinson on The Professional Descendant blog.  Excellent question, lots of great comments too.

*  Can Genealogy Software Be Rated Fairly? by Louis Kessler on Louis Kessler's Behold Blog.   I think it can, but it needs many reviewers to do it fairly.

*  Right and Wrong vs. Consistency by Michele Simmons Lewis on the Ancestoring's Ask a Genealogist blog.  Michele makes the case for being consistent with dates and place names in your database.

*  Protecting Your Digital World - Part 2 by Denise Barrett Olson on the Moultrie Tree Gazette blog.  Denise discusses passwords, phishing and smishing, and social media protection.  Excellent advice!

*  QuickLesson 15: Plagiarism -- Five "CopyWrongs" of Historical Writing by Elizabeth Shown Mills on the EvidenceExplained website.  All genealogy writiers should read and understand this article.

*  A Visit to the Family History Library by Diane Boumenot on the One Rhode Island Family blog. Diane had three days at the FHL and got a lot done.  She has some comments on the process too.

*  Mind the Gap: Comparing Genealogy Associations to Other Info-Based Groups by Amy Coffin on The We Tree Genealogy Blog.  Amy refers to an SLA report that highlights how library associations are trying to transform, renew and inspire their members...and wonders why genealogy groups aren't doing this.

*  Solving the Paradox of Research Planning by Harold Henderson on the Archives.com Experts Series.  Harold has sound advice on research planning.

*  Q&A With Judy Russell: A Conversation About the Upcoming WRHS Seminar, "Genealogy and the Law" by Chris Staats on the Staats Genealogical Services blog.  Chris conducts an interview with Judy on her upcomng seminar.

*  The Drafty Ohioan by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.  Judy describes the process to find out how an Ohioan was not drafted during the Civil War - starting with analyzing the law and how it applied to the person.

*  Review of the New Evidentia Software by Shannon Bennett on The In-Depth Genealogist blog.  Shannon provides another look at Evidentia.

*  So You Want to Re[-Invent Genealogy? Here's How by Harold Henderson on the Midwestern Microhistory: A Genealogy Blog.   Harold outlines how...the challenge is in the details!  Heck, 80% of the genealogy community has no idea what the GPS is.

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1300 genealogy bloggers using Google Reader, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
