SDGS Meeting on Saturday, 10 May Features Gena Philibert-Ortega

The regular second Saturday meeting of the San Diego Genealogical Society is 10 May, at St. Andrews Lutheran Church (8350 Lake Murray Blvd., near Jackson Drive) from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The speaker for both hours will be Gena Philibert-Ortega.

Session One will be Hit the Books! Utilizing Digitized Books Online. Present day genealogists benefit from the virtual library of materials that are available online. Countless books are available from free and subscription websites that hold information about your ancestors and their lives. In this presentation we will discuss digitized book websites, how to navigate them and find the information you need.

The second session will be Read All About It: Your Ancestors in Newspaper. One of the best sources for information on your ancestors is the newspaper. Newspapers are the great equalizer that tells the story of the rich and the poor. Think you know everything about newspaper research? You’d be surprised at what can be found while scanning those pages. In this presentation we will look at where to find newspapers, search strategies and the types of articles that can help benefit your research.

Gena Philibert-Ortega holds a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and Religion. She is the author of  hundreds of articles published in genealogy newsletters and magazines. Her writings can be found on her blogs, Gena’s Genealogy and Food.Family.Ephemera. Her newest book is From the Family Kitchen (F + W Media 2012).
