Latest News From the Chula Vista Genealogical Society

As many Genea-Musings readers know, I reside in Chula Vista, California, and am a member of three San Diego area societies, including the Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CVGS), which has about 90 members at present.

I serve as Newsletter Editor and as Research/Queries Chair of CVGS, and moderate the monthly Research Group on the second Wednesday.  As Newsletter Editor, I write articles for the Chula Vista Genealogy Cafe blog, which are then used in the Newsletter.  CVGS publishes the monthly Newsletter on their website (www.cvgenealogy.org) in the Newsletter link.

The latest articles on the CVGS blog include:

*  CVGS Annual Picnic Review (posted 29 June 2014) - there are several pictures here
*  CVGS Annual Picnic is Wednesday, 25 June 2014 (posted 22 June 2014)
*  CVGS Newsletter for June 2014 is Available (posted 17 June 2014) - with table of contents
*  June 12th CVGS Research Group Review (posted 14 June 2014)
*  Saturday Workshop on 14 June - "Iowa and Illinois Research" (posted 12 June 2014)

As a relatively small society, we have a lot of activities each month - including a monthly Research Group (second Wednesday, moderated by myself), a monthly Computer Group (third Wednesday, moderated by Shirley Becker), a monthly Saturday workshop (usually first or second Saturday, moderated by Susi Pentico) and a monthly Program Meeting with a speaker presentation (last Wednesday, arranged by Program Chair).  There is an annual picnic in June and a holiday luncheon in December instead of the program meeting with a speaker.

In addition, there are two outreach groups currently meeting - one every Wednesday morning, led by John Finch, at the Chula Vista Civic Center Branch Library and one, led by Susi Pentico, on the 3rd Wednesday in the evening at the Lemon Grove Library.

We also host a yearly all-day Seminar on topics of genealogical interest, with one or more speakers.  In March 2014, Jean Wilcox Hibben was our speaker;  in 2013, CeCe Moore was our speaker;  in 2012, Leland Meitzler and Bill Dollarhide were our speakers.  Our next Seminar is scheduled for Fall 2015.

In a small society, we get to know our regular attendees, and the genealogical research problems and successes, pretty well.  This helps us tailor our meetings to the needs of the members and there are enough friendly faces at the meetings that newcomers are not overwhelmed.

If you live in the San Diego area, we invite you to visit our meetings and events, make some new friends, and enjoy doing genealogy in a small group setting where most people know your name.
