Treasure Chest Thursday - Post 218: 1860 Census Record for Manning Knapp Family

It's Treasure Chest Thursday - time to look in my digital image files to see what treasures I can find for my family history and genealogy musings.

The treasure today is the 1860 U.S. Census record for the Manning Knapp (1825-1892) household in New Barbadoes, Bergen County, New Jersey:

The snip of the Manning Knapp household:

The transcription of the household members:

*  Manning McKnapp - age 34, male, a lawyer, $7000 in real property, $4000 in personal property, born N.J.
*   Anna M. Knapp - age 31, female, wife, born N.J.
*  Anna M. Knapp - age 7, female, born Pennsylvania, attends school
*  Sarah C. Knapp - age 73, female, a Lady, born N.J.
*  Joseph Madison - age 3, male, born N.J.
*  Margaret M. Mann - age 28, female, a Domestic S[ervant?], born Ballyhanna, Ireland

The source citation for this census enumeration is:

1860 United States Federal Census, Bergen County, New Jersey, Population Schedule, New Barbadoes township, page 24 (penned), dwelling #191, family #216, Manning McKnapp household; indexed database and digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 10 December 2012), citing National Archives Microfilm Publication M653, Roll 683.

Note that this family was indexed as "McKnapp" for some reason.  Manning Knapp's middle initial was M.  The enumerator may have been confused when he transcribed his notes onto the census form and recorded the name as "McKnapp."

Manning M. Knapp (1825-1892) is the youngest son of William Knapp (1775-1856) and Sarah (Cutter) Knapp (1785-1878).  He eventually served on the New Jersey State Supreme Court.

My ancestor in this enumeration is Sarah C. Knapp, the widow of William Knapp, who is age 73 in this enumeration residing with her son and his family.  The maiden name of Manning's wife, Anna, was Mattison, and the presence of the boy Joseph "Madison" in the household may indicate that James is her nephew.
