Elisabeth King/Konig was born 5 March 1796 in York, York County, Pennsylvania, the third daughter (of nine) and fourth child (of twelve) of Philip Jacob King/Konig (1764-1829) and Catharine Ruth (1770-1813) of York, York County, Pennsylvania, who married in 1789.  Her siblings included: Anna Maria King (1790-1863), Catherine King (1792-????), George King (1794-1860), Salome King (1797-1836), Lydia King (1799-????), Catherine King (1801-1806), Jacob King (1803-1878), Rebecca King (1805-????), Barbara King (1808-1852), Julia Anna King (1810-1825) and Henry King (1813-1886).

This King family is described in the Kings of York County book.[1]

The birth and baptism record of Elizabeth Konig in the Trinity Reformed Church (York, Penn.) records[3.4] says (translated from German to English):

  • Birth: Mr 5 1796
  • Baptism: My 2 1796
  • Child: Elizabeth
  • Parents: Jacob Konig & Catharine

Elizabeth King (noted as Koenig) married Daniel Spangler (1781-1851) on 12 March 1815 in the Trinity Reformed Church in York, York County, Pennsylvania. Daniel Spangler was the son of Rudolf Spengler (1738-1811) and Maria Dorothea Dinkel (1758-1835). The Trinity Reformed Church (York, Penn.) record book notes the marriage of Elizabeth to Daniel Spangler:[2,7]
Mr 12 1815 Daniel Spengler - Elizabeth Koenig
The Daniel Spangler family moved in about 1816 to Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. In 1829 they moved to Sandy Creek township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

Daniel and Elizabeth (Koenig/King) Spangler had ten children, born between 1816 and 1841, listed in the Spangler book,[2] and eight of them survived to adulthood and are listed in Daniel's probate records. The children were:
  • Anna Katrina Spangler was born on 22 February 1816 in York, York County, Pennsylvania. She was christened on 12 July 1816 at Trinity Reformed Church in York, York County, Pennsylvania. She died in infancy after 12 July 1816 at the age of 0 in York, York County, Pennsylvania.

  • Dorothea Matilda Spangler, born 17 December 1827, Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia; married William E. McKnight, about 1849, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, one child; died 13 February 1891, Boulder, Boulder County, Colorado.
  • Helen A. Spangler, born 23 April 1831, Mercer County, Pennsylvania; married James Brown, 28 November 1850, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, four children; died 18 April 1905, Conneautville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
  • Rebecca Spangler, born 2 April 1832, Mercer County, Pennsylvania; married David Jackson Carringer, 16 October 1851, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, three children; died 13 December 1901, San Diego, San Diego County, California.
  • Louisa Spangler, born 9 April 1839, Mercer, Pennsylvania; married Alexander Lefever Power, 3 November 1868, probably Mercer County,Pennsylvania, one child; died 9 March 1883, Conneautville, Crawford, Pennsylvania.
  • Margaret Jane Spangler, born 19 March 1841, Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio; married George Walker Kelso, before 1862, probably Mercer County, Pennsylvania, three children; died 20 December 1871, Greenville, Mercer, Pennsylvania.

In the 1820 United States Census, the Daniel Spangler family resided in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia. The household included one male age 10-16 (perhaps a family member or laborer), one male age 26-45 (certainly Daniel), one female under age 10 (probably daughter Anna Maria), and one female age 16 to 26 ( certainly Elizabeth).

Elizabeth's father, Philip Jacob King, died in 1829 in York, Pennsylvania, and in his 1826 will he directed his son George to pay Philip’s daughter Elizabeth a share of his estate:[5]

"...to be paid as follows, one thousand dollars part thereof to be paid to each of them immediately after my decease and to pay the Interest of one thousand dollars yearly to my daughter Elizabeth intermarried with Daniel Spangler during her natural life the first payment to be made in one year after my decease and at and immediately after her death the said sum of one thousand dollars, the principal, to be paid to her children share and share alike..."

In about 1829, Daniel and Elizabeth (King) Spangler bought Donation Lot No. 929 in the 5th District of Donation Lands which had 200 acres in Sandy Creek township, Mercer County, Pennsylvaniaa.

In the 1830 US Census, the Danl Spangler family resided in Sandy Creek township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. The household included one male age 40-50 (certainly Daniel), two females under age 5 (likely daughter Dorothea Matilda and an unknown person), two females age 5-10 (likely daughters Sarah and Elisabeth), one female age 10-15 (likely daughter Anna Maria), and one female age 30-40 (certainly Elizabeth).  Daniel Spangler was listed on the census enumeration just before Martin Carringer and Henry Carringer.

In the 1840 U
nited States Census, the Daniel Spangler family resided in Sandy Creek township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. The household included no males (but Daniel was listed as head of household), two females under age 5 (likely daughters Louisa and Rebecca), one female age 5-10 (likely daughter Helen), two females age 10-15 (likely daughters Sarah and Dorothea Matilda) , two females age 15-20 (likely daughter Elizabeth and one unknown person), one female age 20-30 (likely daughter Anna Maria), and one female age 40-50 (certainly Elizabeth).

In the 1850 United States Census, the Daniel Spangler family resided in Sandy Creek township in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and was enumerated just after the Henry Carringer family.[6]  The household included:

  • Daniel Spangler, age 68, male, a farmer, real property worth $1500, born PA
  • Elizabeth Spangler, age 54, female, born PA
  • Rebecca Spangler, age 18, female, born PA, attended school
  • Loiza Spangler, age 12, female, born PA, attended school
  • Margaret Spangler, age 11, female, born PA, attended school
  • George Con (?), age 11, male, born PA, attended school
  • Matilda McKight, age 23, female, born VA
  • Elliott McKight, age 28, male, laborer, born PA

Daniel Spangler died intestate on 19 July 1851 in Georgetown, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and was buried in Sheakleyville Cemetery in Sandy Creek Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. An administration of his estate in Mercer County was ordered, and named all of the heirs-at-law, the widow and their eight living daughters. Benjamin Robinson and John Carringer were named as administrators, and inventoried the real and personal property. They found that the personal property would not cover the debts and administration costs, or provide for the maintenance of the widow and minor children, and the court ordered that the real property be sold.

After Daniel’s death in 1851, several of their children moved west, ending up in Iowa, Illinois, Colorado, and California.

Elizabeth (King) Spangler died 18 March 1863 in Conneautville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where her daughter Helen (Spangler) Brown resided. The Spangler surname book[2] says:

"Elizabeth, his wife, was born March 5, 1796, died March 18, 1863, in Conneautville, Pa."

Elizabeth (King) Spangler is buried in Conneautville Cemetery in Conneautville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. The inscription on the gravestone is very corroded.  I think that it says:

Elizabeth
wife of
Daniel Spangler
died
March 18, 1863
aged
66 years
