Best of the Genea-Blogs - 23 to 29 November 2014

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*   Monday Mailbox:  FamilySearch Family Tree Manual by the writer of The Ancestry Insider blog.   Mr. AI finds it...and it will be harder in the future, I fear.

*  A Lost Relative in San Francisco by Christopher Carter Lee on the Vita Brevis blog.  Christopher tells a family story about a relative not surviving the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.

*  My Top Ten Free Genealogy Websites by Linda S. on the Branches on the Family Tree blog.  Linda itemizes her top ten free sites.

*  The Future of Family History by Denise Olson on The Society Journal blog.  Denise thinks photographing and describing heirlooms and artifacts of members might be a good genealogy society project.

*  Five Fabulous Digital Tools to Power Your Life Story by Lisa Alzo on the Legacy News blog.  Lisa describes desktop and mobile audio tools to tell your family stories.

*  Genes From My Father by Israel Pickholtz on the All My Foreparents blog.  Israel investigates his father's autosomal DNA using GEDMatch's new Lazarus feature.

*  10 Tech Gifts for Your Favourite Genealogist by Lynn Palermo on The Armchair Genealogist.  I love this list, and need 7 of them!

*  New RootsMagic 7 COMPARE FILES Feature - My Way! by Sue Maxwell on the Granite Genealogy blog.  Sue used the new Compare Files feature in RootsMagic 7 and found a neat way to get changes made to her Ancestry Member Tree into her RootsMagic database.

*  The Sixth Annual Great Genealogy Poetry Challenge Posts by Bill West on the West in New England blog.  Seven genea-bloggers contributed to this poetry challenge.

*  Genealogy Software is Transforming by Louis Kessler on Louis Kessler's Behold Blog.   Louis comments on the MyHeritage willingness to share information with genealogy software programs.

*  The Online Genealogist is Thankful For ... Online Genealogy! by John Bruglieri on The Online Genealogist blog.  John writes a Then - Now - Future post.  Interesting!

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

*  GeniAus: GAGs - GeniAus Gems - 21 November 2014 by Jill Ball on the GeniAus blog.

*  Recommended Reads by Linda S. on the Empty Branches on the Family Tree blog.

*  Friday Finds and Follows: 28 November 2014 by Miriam J. Robbins on the Ancestories: The Stories of My Ancestors blog.

*  Friday Finds - 11/28/14 by Julie Cahill Tarr on Julie's Genealogy & History Hub blog.

*  This Week's Creme de la Creme -- November 29, 2014 by Gail Dever on the Genealogy a la Carte blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1540 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.

NOTE:  There will be no Best of the Genea-Blogs next week.  Linda and I will be returning from our genealogy cruise to the Mexican Reviera and I was without Internet connections for a week.
