Best of the Genea-Blogs - 11 to 17 October 2015

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Thank You ACPL and PERSI by Michele Simmons Lewis on the Ancestoring blog.  Michele used PERSI to find church records and obtained them from ACPL.

*  Finding a Name: Why Probate Records are a Gold Mine for African-Americans by Dr. Henry Louis Gates and Juliana Szucs on the Ancestry.com Blog.  Yep!!

*  Documenting Royal History by Nathan W. Murphy on the FamilySearch Blog.  Nathan discusses this issue, and provides a link to "Gateway Ancestors" with documented royal pedigrees.

*  Ancestry Deletes Hundreds of Databases by the writer of The Ancestry Insider blog.  Mr. AI tests Ancestry's explanations.

*  A Goodly Bit of Romance by Melanie Frick on the Homestead Genealogical Research blog.  Melanie's research has some interesting twists and lessons learned.

*  An Act for the Relief Of ... and  Finding Those Kentucky Private Laws by Judy G. Russell on The Legal Genealogist blog.   Private laws?  Great stuff here.

*  Troutfetter's Homestead Delayed for Lack of Citizenship - Part I and Part II by Michael John Neill on the Rootdig.com blog.  Michael dissects and analyzes the reasons.

*  Before You Donate Your Genealogy Research -- Important Things To Do by Diane L. Richard on the Upfront With NGS blog.  Diane highlights the ins and outs of this.  Useful information.

*  When the Source Doesn't Have that Source Document by Jacqi Stevens on her A Family Tapestry blog.  Jacqi's searching for records that may not exist one place at a time.

*  Tip:  Don't Rely on Just the Search Function When Using Newspaper Databases by Christine Manczuk on the Ancestry Island blog.  Christine has some excellent examples.

*  4 Reasons You Might Suck at Genealogy by Kenneth R. Marks on The Ancestor Hunt blog.  Ken shares his four reasons.

*  DNA.Land - a New Site for Your DNA Results by Kitty Cooper on Kitty Cooper's Blog.  Kitty explores her matches a bit on this new DNA analysis site.
