RootsMagic Can Now Read Family Tree Maker Files Directly - UPDATED

The RootsMagic News email came today, noting that RootsMagic Version 7,1.0.1 (updated today) any can import any Family Tree Maker file (from FTM 5 (?) to FTM 2014) directly - no need for a GEDCOM transfer.  This has many benefits, not the least of which is that the Media files get transferred.

Here is the information from the RootsMagic newsletter:

==========================================

Since Ancestry's announcement that they were parting ways with their Family Tree Maker software, thousands of FTM users have found a new home in RootsMagic.  One of the first questions they have is, "How do I get my data from FTM into RootsMagic?"

Until now, the answer has always been through a GEDCOM file.  But GEDCOM files from Family Tree Maker, while mostly effective, were often lacking data and details only found in the original file.  Plus it added an extra step in the conversion process.

That's why we're excited to announce the release of RootsMagic 7.1.0.1.  In addition to various tweaks and fixes, this update adds the ability to directly import any Family Tree Maker file.  In fact, RootsMagic can now import a bigger variety of Family Tree Maker files than any single version of Family Tree Maker itself.

This is a free update for RootsMagic 7 users.  If you haven't already downloaded the update, look for the "Update Available" indicator in the lower right corner of your RootsMagic 7 program screen, and click on it.

===========================================

So does it work?  Yes, but ... the tags for Media didn't transfer to Facts.

Here is a Person screen for my grandfather from the Family Tree Maker 2014 file, to which I have attached many Ancestry.com records via a sync with my Ancestry Member Tree, I want to import:

As you can see on the screen above, I have 13 sources and 12 media items for the person, and one source and one Media item for most of the Facts for this person.

I updated RootsMagic 7 to Version 7.1.0.1, and clicked on File > Import.  Here is the "Import File" screen:

I picked "Family Tree Maker (FTM)" from the list above, and the "Create a new RootsMagic file" window opened.  I added a file name:

I clicked "OK" and the file started to download:

When it was finished, the file opened, and I went to my grandfather's profile in RootsMagic:

All of the Media items and sources for my grandfather's name are there.  All of the Sources for the Facts are there.

However, the Media items that were tagged to the Facts are not there - the Media check is missing in the Fact list.

I had 1,138 Media items in my Family Tree Maker 2014 file, and I have 1,138 Media items in the RootsMagic 7 file with 11,438 Media links.  They all came across in the import, but did not tag to the Facts.

This is a significant step for RootsMagic 7, but I don't look forward to tagging 1,138 Media items to the Facts in my database.  I hope RootsMagic finds a way to tag the Media to the Facts that were tagged in Family Tree Maker.

UPDATED:  Well, never mind.  Bruce Buzbee commented that:

"Randy, that first screen isn't showing media attached to a fact. It is showing the sources attached to that fact (and the media attached to that source). You need to click the Media tab on that right panel if you want to see any media attached to the fact itself in FTM.

"RootsMagic *will* import and attach media to the same person, event, source, etc. that it was attached to in FTM. "

When I looked at the RootsMagic GEDCOM file that I imported into the Family Tree Maker file back in 2012, I did not have Media attached to Facts.  The Media that were in the uploaded FTM file were attached by accepting Ancestry Hints, not through the GEDCOM upload to the FTM file.  Now I have over 3,000 Media links attached to Facts in my current RootsMagic database. I forgot about that little detail!

I'm sorry for the non-problem!  Thank you Bruce!

Randy, that first screen isn't showing media attached to a fact. It is showing the sources attached to that fact (and the media attached to that source). You need to click the Media tab on that right panel if you want to see any media attached to the fact itself in FTM.

RootsMagic *will* import and attach media to the same person, event, source, etc. that it was attached to in FTM.
