SDGS Program on Saturday, 12 March is on "19th Century Germans to America"

The March 12th program meeting of the San Diego Genealogical Society will be at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church (8350 Lake Murray Blvd., just south of Jackson Drive) starting at 10 a.m.

The program speaker will be Patricia Dintrone on the topic of "19th Century Germans to America: Why They Left, Why They Came."

Patricia Dintrone received her PhD in History from the University of Virginia in 1982 and spent most of her career as a faculty member at San Diego State University, with side trips to UCSD. After her retirement from SDSU she followed her interest in history into the world of genealogy, tracing her family roots back to Germany in the 1600s. Since 2011 she has been a volunteer consultant at the
Family Search Library in Mission Valley. She has taught classes in using FamilySearch.org, accessing microfilm records, and the historical background of immigration, in addition to helping many individual clients discover their roots.

19th Century Germans to America: Why They Left, Why They Came. This talk will examine the many factors that caused German immigrants to leave Germany and settle in the United States from the 1830s to the 1880s. We will focus especially on the interrelationship of forces that encouraged departure from Germany and those that encouraged settlement in the US. Areas that we will consider include not only economic (the most commonly cited reason for emigration/immigration) but also political and religious developments in both countries as well.  Although this talk focuses on the German experience, the questions it examines are applicable to any large-scale immigration movement.

The two Saturday morning classes at 9 a.;m. are:

*  “Ancestry.com SIG” with Del Ritchhart, Upstairs Classroom.

*  “Brickwalls” with Peter Steelquist, Upstairs Classroom #2.

Seating is limited. RSVP to sdgsclasses@gmail.com.
