In this series of posts, I will discuss the challenges that I found with the heirs of Elizabeth Auble named in her 1893 will.

1)  Elizabeth Auble identified Euphemia Foster, her niece, daughter of her sister, Sophia Auble, as one of her heirs.

I had no information before I read the will that Sophia Auble existed.  The questions I need to answer included:

*  What was Sophia Auble's birth date and place.
*  Did Sophia Auble marry, and if so who and when and where?
*  did Sophia Auble have children other than Euphemia?
*  When and where did Sophia Auble die and is buried?
*  When and where was Euphemia Foster born?
*  Who was Euphemia Foster's birth father, and when was he born and died?
*  Did Euphemia Foster marry, and if so who and when and where?
*  Did Euphemia Foster have any children?  If so, who, when, and where?

2)  Census Records -- the research trail started with a memory that I had seen Ann Auble (mother of Elizabeth, David, William, Sophia, etc.) in the 1850 and 1860 U.S. census living with a Sophia and a Euphemia.

a)  Sure enough, in the 1850 U.S. census in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey, there is:

The extracted information for this record is:

In the 1850 U.S. Census for Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey, the Seth W. Hulse household included:

*  Seth W. Hulse - age 53, male, white, labourer, $6000 in real property, born in N.J.
*  Sophia Hulse - age 46, female, white, born in N.J.
*  Euphemia Foster - age 20, female, white, born in N.J.

*  Ann Auble - age 66, female, white, born in N.J.

The source citation for this record is:

1850 United States Federal Census, Sussex County, New Jersey, popultion schedule, Page 88B, Dwelling #247, Family #254, Seth Hulse household; indexed database and digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com), citing National Archives Microfilm Publication M432, Roll 464.

b)  The 1860 U.S. Census record is:

The extracted information is:

In the 1860 U.S. Census for Stillwater, Sussexc County, New Jersey, the Sophia Hults household included:

*  Sophia Hults - age 49, female, white, $1350 in real property, $210 in personal property, born in N.J.
*  Ann S. Buit - age 5, female, white, born in N.J.
*  Ann Auble - age 73, female, white, born in N.J.

Note that Euphemia Foster is enumerated just above Sophia Hults, a domestic in another household.

The source citation for this record is:

1860 United States Federal Census, Population Schedule, Sussex County, New Jersey, popultion schedule, Page 304, Dwelling #249, Family #260, Sophia Hults household; indexed database and digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com), citing National Archives Microfilm Publication M653, Roll 709.

c)  I found another record in the 1870 U.S. Census for Sophia Hulse, but not for Euphemia:

The extracted information is:

In the 1870 United States Census, Sophia Hulse (enumerated as Hulliz) household was enumerated in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey.  The household included:

*  Sophia Hulliz - age 62, female, white, keeping house, born New Jersey
*  Samantha Bales - age 16, female, white, at school, born New Jersey

The source citation is:

1870 United States Federal Census, Population Schedule, Sussex County, New Jersey, Stillwater, page 202, dwelling #24, family #27, Sophia Hulliz household, digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 5 May 2016); citing National Archives Microfilm Publication M593, Roll ???.

d)  I did not find Sophia in the 1880 U.S. Census, but I did find Euphemia:

The extracted information from this record is:

In the 1880 United States census, the Euphemia Foster household was enumerated in Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey.  The family was enumerated just below the Robert Auble household.  The household included:

*  Euphemia Foster - white, female, age 47, single, keeping house, born New Jersey, father born New Jersey, mother born New Jersey
*  Annie C. Foster - white, female, age 23, daughter, single, dressmaker, has dyspepsia, born New Jersey, father born New Jersey, mother born New Jersey
*  Cora Harris - white, female, age 18, boarder, single, dressmaker, has bilious, born New Jersey, father born New Jersey, mother born New York.

The source citation for this record is:

1880 United States Federal Census, Population Schedule, Warren County, New Jersey, Blairstown, ED 191, page 296C, dwelling #244, family #266, Euphemia Foster household; digital image, Ancestry.com (http://weww.ancestry.com); citing National Archives Microfilm Publication T9, Roll 799.

The 1880 Census lists Annie C. Foster age 23 as Euphemia's daughter.  There is a Samantha Bales age 15 living with Sophia Hulliz in 1870, and an Ann C. Buit in the 1860 Census with Sophia Hults.  Is this Ann/Annie the same person as Samantha?

3)  There is a New Jersey Birth record for Samantha Foster in Stillwater on 23 April 1855, with Euphemia Foster listed as the mother.  The source is:

"New Jersey Births and Christenings Index, 1660-1931," indexed database, FamilySearch (http://familysearch.org), Samantha Foster entry.

I will chase this down further in the next post.

4)  Sophia (Auble) (Foster?) Hulse/Hultz died 1 May 1887 in Blairstown, Warren County, N.J..  A death record source is:

"New Jersey, Deaths and Burials Index, 1720-1971," online database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org), citing extracted death and burial records., Sophia Hulse entry.

She is also listed on Find A Grave, buried in Union Brick Cemetery in Blairstown, with an inscription that says she was 82 years and 5 months old:

Jim Tipton, indexed database, Find A Grave (http://www.findagrave.com), Union Brick Cemetery, Blairstown, N.J., Sophia Hulse memorial #130778797.

5)  Sophia Hulse died intestate, and had a Letter of Administration filed on 18 May 1888 in Warren County, New Jersey.

The transcription of the snippet above is:

"Sophia Hulse Deceased.
Know all men by these presents that
we Euphemia S. Foster, Annie S. McCracken, John McCracken and
Abraham H. Smith, all of the County of Warren in the State of
New Jersey are held and firmly bound unto the ordinary
of the State of New Jersey in the sum of One thousand dollars to be
paid to the said ordinary or his assigns to which payment will
and truly to be made we bind ourselves and each of us
for herself, and for himself, jointly and severally, our, and each
of our heirs, executors and administrators by these presents.
Sealed with our seals and dated this the 18th day of May
AD 1888."

The Letter of Administration goes on to appoint Euphemia S. Foster as the administrator of the estate of Sophia Hulse.  This document does not indicate a relationship between Euphemia and Sophia.  And is Annie S. McCracken the Ann Buit, Annie Foster or Samantha Bales in the census records?

Now I recall that Annie S. McCracken was mentioned in Elizabeth Auble's will!

6)  I will stop here and work on the next installment of this puzzle.  Eventually, I will answer all of the questions posed above!
