Treasure Chest Tuesday - Lyle L. Carringer's 1909-14 High School Grade Summary Card

Today's Tuesday's Treasure is the grade card summary for my grandfather, Lyle Lawrence Carringer (1891-1976), to San Diego High School.

The numbers in the columns are based on:

1 = Excellent

2+ Good

3 = Fair

4 = Failure

Year I should be the 1909-1910 school year (he enrolled in September 1909)

Year IV should be the 1913-1914 (he graduated in June 1914). 

He may have skipped going to school for one year in 1911-1913.  He probably worked full-time for two semesters in the five year period.  

The  information from this "Grade Card Summary" is:

a)  Year I (9th grade) - 7 and 7 classes

**  English:  2 and 1
**  Latin:  2 and 2
**  Spanish:  2 and 2
**  Algebra:  3 and 2
**  Physiography:  1 and 1
**  Drawing F.H.:  1 and 1  [free-hand?]
**  Exp. or Singing:  1 and 1 [exposition = speech or drama?]

b)  Year II (10th grade) - 5 and 5 classes

**  Geometry:  3 and 4
**  Mech. Drawing:  1 and 1

**  Repeated Geometry:  2 and 2

*  36 credits  (32 credits were required for graduation)

It is evident that he did well in English, Spanish, Physiography, Drawing, Exp[osition?], History and Economics.  And not so well in Geometry and Algebra.  

There are so many things I don't know about my grandfather's interests and capabilities.  He was an accountant at a department store after graduation.  He served a year in the Marines.  He married in 1918.  He collected stamps from all over the world and had many correspondents all over the world.  He loved technology things - automobiles, airplanes, etc.  He loved watching the airplanes flying in and out of the naval base on North Island, and ships coming in and out of San Diego harbor.  He did well owning apartment houses, gardening and repairing houses.  

My friend, and San Diego genealogy colleague, Yvette Porter Moore, is also a graduate of San Diego High School, and is current Historian of the SDHS Alumni Association.  When she told me that on Facebook, I asked her if there were any school records, besides Yearbooks, for me, my mother, and my grandparents.  There were!!  Yvette copied them for me and sent them via email.  I was genea-smacked by them.  What treasures.More records like this one to come!
