A Death Date for Matilda (--?--) Schaffner in San Francisco

I have been mining the Newspapers.com collection for obituaries, death notices, and other newspaper articles for my ancestors and my wife's ancestors.

Yesterday, I found a death notice for Matilda (--?--) Schaffner, wife of Frederick Schaffner (1828-1899) of San Francisco in the 23 January 1875 edition of the Oakland [Calif.] Tribune.

The transcription of this Death Notice is:

"SCHAFFNER -- In this city, January 23d, 1875, Martha Matilda, wife of Frederick Schaffner, a native of Ireland, aged 37 years, 7 months and 6 days.

"Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral tomorrow (Sunday) at 2 o'clock P,M.  from residence, corner Franklin and Ninth streets, without further notice."

The source citation for this death notice is:

"DIED," death notice, Oakland [Calif.] Tribune, 23 January 1875, page 3, column 6, Martha Matilda Schaffner death notice; Newspapers.com (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 26 June 2018).

This death notice improved my family tree database by providing:

*  A first name - "Martha Matilda" instead of "Matilda" found in an 1880 U.S. census record.
*  A birth place - "Ireland"
*  A death date:  "23 January 1875" which I did not have.
*  A death place -  Assumed to be Oakland, because that is where the newspaper says it was and the residence is in Oakland.
*  An age at death - "37 years, 7 months, 6 days" which indicates a birth date of 17 June 1837.  I had only "about 1834" from an 1870 census record.
*  The residence - "Franklin and Ninth streets" in Oakland.  There is no Franklin and Ninth intersection in San Francisco.  I didn't know they resided in Oakland at any time.

Martha Matilda (--?--) Schaffner was probably the mother of Linda's great-grandfather, Herman Schaffner (1851-1921), although Herman's birth year would make Matilda only 14 if her 1837 birth date is correct.  It is possible that Matilda is not Herman's mother, since the next known child was Matilda born in about 1857.

After Matilda died, Frederick Schaffner married Dora (--?--) --?-- (1838-1904) before 1880, probably in San Francisco or Oakland.  They resided in San Francisco in the 1880 U.S. Census.  I don't know Dora's maiden name or probably married name before she married Frederick before 1880.
