Seavers in the News -- August Seaver Dies at Age 91 in St. Louis in 1927

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from St. Louis [Mo.] Globe-Democrat newspaper dated 5 May 1927:

The transcription of the article is:

"SEAVER -- Entered into rest on Tuesday, May 3, 1927, at 4:15 p.m. August Seaver, dearly beloved husband of Minnie Seaver, (nee Riepke), beloved father of Henry, Hermann, Gus, Minnie, Emma and Lulu Seaver, and our dear father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle in his 92nd year.

"Funeral Friday May 6, at 3 p.m., from family residence, 8476 Lackland avenue, Overland, Mo., to Zions Cemetery. Pleitsch Service."

The source citation is:

"Seaver," St. Louis [Mo.] Globe-Democrat newspaper, death notice, Thursday, 5 May 1927, page 26, column 2, August Seaver obituary; Newspapers.com   (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 16 April 2020).

Short yet sweet.  This names his wife (including her maiden name), and his 6 children (but not their spouses), an address, a death date, the cemetery, and his approximate age.

I had this family in my Seaver family tree database.  August Seaver was born on 11 March 1836 in Germany.  He married Wilhelmina "Minnie" Riepke (1838-1931) in about 1862, probably in St. Louis, Missouri.  They had six children:

*  Henry Seaver (1864-1953), married in about 1892 to Emelia Schulte (1869-1923), two children.

*  Herman Frederick Seaver (1866-1942), married in 1900 to Mathilda Ellerbrake (1873-1946), two children.

*  Minnie K. Seaver (1872-1959)

*  Emma Marie Seaver (1874-1962)

*  August Frederick "Gus" Seaver (1883-1936), married about 1906 to Mary Caroline Rothman (1884-1976), one child.

*  Lulu C. Seaver (1885-1960).

This obituary doesn't tell us much about his birthplace, his migration to America, settling and living in St. Louis, his occupation or interests.  In the 1880 U.S. Census, August Seaver is an agent for a vinegar manufacturer in St. Louis.  He has no occupation in the 1900, 1910 or 1920 U.S. Census records.  The 1900 census says he immigrated in 1860 and is a naturalized citizen.  His death certificate says he was a retired salesman, provides his birth date, and the cause of death was acute dilatation of the heart, and chronic myocarditis. Apparently, his three daughters never married.

August Seaver is not one of my known relatives.  He came from Germany in 1860.

There are over 9,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and  some persons live to be 91 years old.  I am glad that I can honor August Seaver today.
