Seavers in the News -- Charlotte (Dezell) Seaver Dies in 1945 in Ridgewood, New Jersey

 It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the The Herald-News [Passaic, N.J.] newspaper dated 21 June 1945:

The transcription of the article is:

"Mrs. Charlotte Dezell Seaver Dies,

Daughter Collegiate School Instructor

"Mrs. Charlotte Dezell Seaver, mother of Miss Eleanor Seaver, director of physical education for girls at Passaic Collegiate School, died last night at the private hospital on Godwin Avenue, Ridgewood, where she had been ill for the past year and a half.

"Mrs. Seaver, who was born at Waddington, N.Y., came to Passaic eighteen years ago to make her home with her daughter who lives at 238 Gregory Avenue.

"Widowed early in life Mrs. Seaver, who already had a bachelor's degree from St. Lawrence University, resumed her studies at Clarkson School of Technology at Potsdam, N.Y., working for a bachelor of science degree in home economics, which was opening a new field for career women at that time.

"She became supervisor of domestic science at Asbury Park under Dr. Fred S. Shepherd, who later became superintendent of Passaic public schools.

"Mrs. Seaver attended the 50th anniversary of her graduation from St. Lawrence in 1932.

"She was a woman of very keen intellect and an independent political thinker.  She was tremendously interested in world affairs and an ardent believer in the World Court.

"Her husband, Henry Ellison Seaver, was professor of Latin at St. Lawrence University after his graduation from Harvard.  He studied law in the offices of Judge Ledyard Hale at Canton, N.Y., where he practiced law until his early death.

"They had another daughter who died in childhood."

This obituary provides a full married name, no age, no birth date, a birth place, an implied death date, a death place, no cause of death, and the names of her spouse and daughter.  

Charlotte Dezell (1860-1945) was the daughter of Robert and Jane (Short) Dezell, and was born in Waddington, New York.  She married Henry Ellison Seaver (1860-1898) on 23 July 1891 in Canton New York.  They had two children:

*  Eleanor Dezell Seaver (1896-1974)

*  daughter Seaver (????-????)

I was unable to find a record that named the unknown daughter who died in childhood.  Henry Ellison Seaver died in 1898, and Eleanor is the only child listed in the 1900 (1 child born to Charlotte) and 1910 (two children born to Charlotte) U.S. census records. 

I am a 6th cousin 4 times removed to Henry Ellison Seaver, with the common ancestors being Robert and Elizabeth (Ballard) Seaver, the immigrants in 1634 to Boston, Massachusetts.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person is widowed at a young age, and lives a full life thereafter. I am glad that I can honor Charlotte (Dezell) Seaver today.  

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
