Leading UK family history website Findmypast have announced a major update to their online Family Tree.  

 

As of today, all users will benefit from a powerful new Family Tree view that has been launched to enrich user discoveries.  

 

Developed in line with customer feedback and in-depth user testing, the improved Findmypast Family Tree features a fresh design as well as a variety of enhanced navigation capabilities.  

 

Specifically tailored to make online research more intuitive, accessible and rewarding than before, Findmypast’s upgraded tree now includes;

• The ability to view five full generations at once 
• The ability to zoom in and out on specific individuals or branches  
• The ability to easily return to a family tree's “Home” person by selecting the house icon 
• A sidebar menu allowing easier editing of ancestor profiles  
• Highlighting “focus” individuals for easier navigation

Today’s announcement marks the latest in a series of major updates to the Findmypast Family Tree following significant investment in the development of new tools and features.  

 

It builds on the success of recent updates including Tree-To-Tree Hints and Private Messaging, both features that enable users to directly benefit from the existing research of experienced family historians with shared ancestors.

I can't resist checking out a new online family tree.  I already had two trees on Findmypast, so I logged in and checked out the new tree.  

Here is the tree showing six generations in the family view - 3 ancestor generations above the Focus person (I chose my grandfather, Lyle Lawrence Carringer) and 2 descendant generations below the Focus person.

By clicking on a person on the tree, you can see the information, and edit that information, about the person.  I chose my grandfather:

The information card opens on the left of the family view screen.  I wanted to see the full profile, so I clicked on the "View full profile" button, and saw information about the person (two screens below):

How can I edit the information?  I clicked on the "Facts & Events" tab and saw:

When I run my mouse over any line, an Edit icon and a Delete icon appear on the right side of the fact or event.  I can edit or delete information using those icons.  For each Fact or event, there are links for sources, media and notes.  

This all is very logical and well laid out.  However, there is a lot of clicking.  There is a link to go back to the Tree view.  When I did that, I had a choice of Family View, Pedigree View and Family Group View.  I wondered how to get a Pedigree View!  Here it is:

What are the orange dots with numbers in them on each View?  They are Hints for that person from the Findmypast record collections.
