Carringers in the News -- Monroe Carringer Dies in Meadville, Pennsylvania in 1942

 It's time for another edition of "Carringers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Carringer (my mother's maiden surname) that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the [Franklin, Penn.] News-Herald newspaper dated 22 May 1942:

The transcription of this article is:

"Monroe Carringer

"Monroe Carringer, 69, of Greer Township, Mercer County, died at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Meadville Hospital following a short illness.

"The deceased is the son of the late George Alexander and Esther Louise Carringer, of Rocky Grove.  He was born in Sugarcreek Township Oct. 23, 1872.

". Carringer as associated with the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in Europe several years and in South America with the Legritis Oil Company.  He was an oil well driller prior to his retirement on account of ill health.

"Mr. Carringer attended the Wesleyan Methodist Church.

"He is survived by one son, Elwood, of Meadville; four daughters, Mrs. C.D. Turben, of Hartstown; Mrs. Twila Schreffler, of Hadley; Mrs. Gerald Bowers, Alliston, Ont., Canada; and Mrs. Cleo Yeager, Clarks Mills; one brother, William, of Cleveland. and four sisters, Mrs. Palmer Campbell, of West Sunbury; Mrs. Howard Cain, of San Diego, Calif.; Mrs. Harley Bell, of Franklin; and Mrs. William Rowe, of Greenville.  Seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.

"The body was removed to the Fisher Funeral Home at Hadley where friends may call until Saturday morning.  Services in charge of the Rev. Livingston, of Meadville, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mrs. Schreffler's home in Hadley.  Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery."

This obituary provides a birth date and place, parents' names (but the father's name was Joseph, not George), death date and place, children's names, siblings names, and information about his occupation and church affiliation.

Otis Monroe Carringer was born 23 October 1872 in Sugercreek Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph Alexander and Esther Louise (King) Carringer.  He died 20 May 1942 in Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.  He married Cynthia Jane Turner (1879-1948) on 1 January 1895 in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York.  They had five children:

*  Lola M. Carringer (1895-1987), married 1923 Charles Oscar Turben (1900-1948).

*  Twila Belle Carringer (1897-1966), married 1916 John Edward Schreffler (1891-1976).

*  Vera Andean Carringer (1906-1967), married 1936 Oscar Harrison Bowers (1894-1955).

*  Cleo Adella Carringer (1908-1974), married 1924 Kenneth Lewis Yeager (1905-1983).

*  Elwood Martin Carringer (1912-1969), married 1936 Mary E. Hewitt (1915-2016).

I am a third cousin two times removed to Otis Monroe Carringer.  Our common ancestors are my 4th great-grandparents Martin Carringer (1758-1835) and Maria Magdalena Hoax (1768-1851). 

There are hundreds of Carringer "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person has a long career of strenuous work and a wonderful obituary chock full of information.  I am glad that I can honor Otis Monroe Carringer today.  

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
