Seavers In the News -- Carl W. Seaver Dies in 1947 in Williamstown, Vermont

It's time for another edition of "Seavers in the News" - a weekly feature from the historical newspapers about persons with the surname Seaver that are interesting, useful, mysterious, fun, macabre, or add information to my family tree database.

This week's entry is from the Barre [Vt.] Daily Times newspaper dated 25 November 1947:

The transcription of the article is:

"CARL W. SEAVER
Respected Life-Long Williamstown

"Williamstown, Nov. 25 -- Carl w. Seaver, 78, native resident and town official, died on Monday night at 9 o'clock at his home in the village of Williamstown, following an illness of over a year.

"Born on May 27, 1869, in Williamstown, he made his home here all his life.  His parents were Olney F. and Marcia (Carpenter) Seaver.  In his early youth he was a carpenter.  He married Maria Roberts on March 27, 1895, after which he and his wife made their home for a time with his parents on a farm.  He was always a farmer until his retirement because of ill health.

"He was a member of Summit lodge, No. 104, F. & A.M. for over 50 years and a past master of the organization, past matron of the Charity chapter, O.E.S. and for 39 years was a substitute mail carrier on R.F.D. No. 3 route.  At one time he was town grand juror and a justice of the peace.  A member of the Congregational church of Williamstown, he was a deacon of the church for a number of years, having been made an honorary deacon last year.  For 18 years he was agent for the Farm Bureau insurance in the district, as well as the Patrons Cooperative fire insurance firm for a number of years.

"Mr. and Mrs. Seaver celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1945.

"Besides his widow he is survived by a son, Hugh L. Seaver, of Randolph.  Another son, Harold A. Seaver, died in 1943 at the age of 41.  Grandchildren surviving include Miss. Lillian Seaver of Boston,  Edward C. Seaver of Bowling Green, Ohio, and Mrs. Harlan Storrs, Jr., Priscilla Seaver, Mrs. George Gomez and Nancy Seaver, all of Williamstown.  Three great-grandchildren who survive are Michael Storrs and Danny Gomez of Williamstown and Judith Seaver.  A nephew also survives.

"The Masonic funeral service will be conducted at the Congregational church on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. Daniel E. Hattie officiating.  A private prayer service will be conducted for the family at 12:30 p.m. before the church service.  Friends may call after noontime tomorrow.  Interment will be made in the family lot of the village cemetery."

This obituary provides a birth date and place, a marriage date, an implied death date and place, the parents names, the spouse's name, and the names of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a long list of his life's work, associations and offices.  This is one of the most complete and flattering obituaries I have ever read!

Carl Weston Seaver (1869-1947) was born 27 Mat 1869 in Williamstown, Vermont, the second child of Olney Farnham and Marcia Olive (Carpenter) Seaver.  He married Maria Roberts (1874-1958) on 25 March 1895 in Willismtown.  They had two sons:

*  Hugh Leland Seaver (1897-1979), married about 1920 Ethel Pearl Rye (1893-1977).
*  Howell Ashton Seaver (1901-1943), married 6 January 1924 to Rhoda May Bruce (1900-1993).

I am a 7th cousin 3 times removed to Carl Weston Seaver, with the common Seaver ancestors being Robert and Elizabeth (Ballard) Seaver in the 1630s.

There are over 10,000 Seaver "stories" in my family tree - and this was one of them.   Life happens, accidentally and intentionally, and sometimes a person is a good family man, volunteer and citizen admired by the community. I am glad that I can honor Carl Weston Seaver today.

You never know when a descendant or relative will find this blog post and learn something about their ancestors or relatives, or will provide more information about them to me.
