4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

The biography and family data for several generations of the descendants of Thomas Waite of Portsmouth RI was discussed in the article "Thomas Waite of Portsmouth, R.I. and Some of his Descendants," by G. Andrews Moriarty, published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Record[1].  Additional information was obtained from the book by John Cassan Waite, Family Records of the Descendants of Thomas Wait of Portsmouth, Rhode Island[2].

Thomas Wate/Wait/Waite was born in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, the son of Reuben Waite and Tabitha Launders of Dartmouth[3.5].

His father, Reuben Waite, wrote his will on 11 September 1707, which was proved 5 November 1707 in Bristol County Probate Court[6].  In his will he bequeathed to his son Thomas Wait:
"Imprimis I will that after my decease my son Thomas Wait shall have halfe my farm or lott of land allready layd out and Exactly divided in ye midle at the foot and so to extend to the head with half my marsh meadow with half my priviledge of individual lands throughout the township of Dartmouth.  The said divided land and meadow to lye in ye south side of sd lott of land."  His other four brothers received he other half of his father's land.
He married on 5 Jan 1710/11 in Dartmouth to Mary Tripp (1689-a1739)[4,7], born 22 August 1689 in Dartmouth, Massachusetts.  They had eight children, all born in Dartmouth or East Greenwich, Rhode Island , and recorded in both places:

*  John Waite (1711-1770), married 1733 Elizabeth Sullivant (1711-1770).
*  Reuben Waite (1713-a1754), married 1735 Rebecca Soule (1715-1747).
*  Thomas Waite (1716-1790), married 1743 Tabitha Ellis (1721-1813).
*  Mary Waite (1718-1803), married 1743  William Tripp (1712-1785).
*  Meriban Waite (1720-1803), married 1742 Benjamin Soule (1719-1803).
*  Mehitable Waite (1722-1799), married 1746 Henry Reynolds (1724-1777).
*  Martha Waite )1725-????).
*  Alice Waite (1729-????).

In 1721, Thomas sold his share of his father's estate to his brother Benjamin Wait.

Thomas was made Freeman on 2 May 1732 at East Greenwich RI. He resided at East Greenwich and Dartmouth. On 14 March 1714/5 Thomas and his wife mortgaged land there[1]

In 1721, Thomas Waite sold his share in his father's estate to his brother, Benjamin Waite[2].

In 1732 they were living in East Greenwich across Narragansett Bay from Dartmouth. His property was located in that part of East Greenwich that was later set off as West Greenwich. On 26 September 1741, Thomas conveyed land in West Greenwich to his son Thomas Wait Jr.  He returned to Dartmouth by 31 December 1743 and on that day conveyed to his son Thomas and named his residence as Dartmouth[1,2].

Thomas Wait's death date is unknown.  It is after 31 December 1743, probably in Dartmouth[1-2].  There is no probate record for Thomas Waite in the Bristol County Probate Court records.
