Tombstone Tuesday - Hannah and Zachariah Hildreth in Townsend MA

Zacharish Hildreth (1783-1857) and Hannah (Sawtell) Hildreth (1789-1857) are one set of my third great-grandparents. They resided in Townsend, Middlesex County, Massachusetts for all of their married lives. They are buried in the New Cemetery in Townsend (on the south side of Highland Street as you go east from town center). They are in separate graves:

The grave inscriptions are difficult to read from the photograph. I wrote down the inscriptions when I visited the site in 1994:

Zachariah Hildreth,
Jan 22 1857 ae 73y

Hannah Hildreth,
wife of
Zachariah Hildreth
Jan 13 1857 ae 67y

There are two graves of two of their children adjacent to them (no photo available):

Clarissa Hildreth,
d. Zachariah & Hannah,
Sept 16 1820, ae 5y 29d

Harriet A Hildreth,
July 7 1850
ae 14y 11m 12d

Zachariah Hildreth was born 10 April 1783 in Townsend, Middlesex, MA, the son of Zachariah Hildreth and Elizabeth Keyes. He died 22 January 1857 in Townsend. He married 21 October 1810 in Townsend to Hannah Sawtell. Hannah was born 6 November 1789 in Brookline, Hillsborough, New Hampshire, the daughter of Josiah Sawtell and Hannah Smith.

Their son, Edward Hildreth (1831-1899) is my direct line ancestor to Zachariah and Hannah (Sawtell) Hildreth. A more complete Ahnentafel report for my Hildreth line, with earlier generations and the listings of children of these ancestors, can be found at "Ancestors of Hattie Louise Hildreth."
