My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.
Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:
* Now We're Getting Somewhere... by Jenny Lanctot on the Are My Roots Showing? blog. Jenny shared her research problem in a Facebook group and received almost instant help. Sharing, collaborating and crowdsourcing work well!
* DNA Standards and Certification -- A Response to an NGS Quarterly Editorial by Blaine Bettinger on The Genetic Genealogist blog. Blaine makes his case for setting DNA standards and a Genetic Genealogist certification.
* Evernote for Genealogy: The Foundation of My Research Organization System and Evernote for Genealogy: Research Logs and Note Links by Colleen Greene on the Colleen Greene blog. I really like Colleen's system of organizing her research.
* Cemetery Records -- What Can They Tell You? How Can You Use Them? by Diane Gould Hall on the Michigan Family Trails blog. Diane has some great examples and a nice set of tips and notes about contacting cemeteries.
* Using Google Maps With Blogger by Tony Proctor on the Parallax View blog. Tony describes how to embed a movable Google Map into a blog post. A bit of "inside blogball" here, but I like it!
* Top 20 Search Tips by Emma on the Ancestry.co.uk blog. The UK version of Ancestry.com search is similar to the US version - check out these tips.
* What's New in Evidentia 2.0 by Jenny Lanctot on the Are My Roots Showing? blog. Jenny highlights improvements and additions in Evidentia version 2.
* Your Family: Past, Present and Future by Tim Urban on the Wait But Why blog. Here's an excellent explanation of pedigree collapse and more with great charts.
* RPAC Report, January 2014 by Barbara Mathews on the BCG Springboard: News and Notes blog. Barbara highlights information about the Records Preservation and Access Committee for January, including SSDI efforts.
* Teenagers Teaching by Janet Hovorka on the Zap the Grnadma Gap blog. Janet's son, Matthew, is doing two presentations at RootsTech on "Get to Know Your Geezers" using several short videos and slides. Check out the videos here - they are great!
* Microfilm to Megapixels: Use a Digital Camera as a Film Scanner by Denise May Levenick on The Family Curator blog. Denise has an excellent way to bypass the microfilm scanners at a repository.
