Best of the Genea-Blogs - 29 June to 5 July 2014

Hundreds of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts.

My criteria for "Best of ..." are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don't list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts.

Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

*  Genealogy as Pastime and Profession : Comments Upon Reading by Jill K. Morelli on the Genealogy Certification: My Personal Journal blog.  Jill provides an interesting take on the Donald Lines Jacobus' 1930 book.

*  Building a Solid Genealogy Library (Part One) by Michael Hait on the Planting the Seeds blog.  Michael has recommendations - an excellent list!

*  A Suspicious First Cousin by Sam Sturgis on the Vita Brevis blog.  Sam's mother didn't believe the information but she did have a previously unknown aunt.

*  Six of the Basic Rules of Genealogy by James Tanner on the Genealogy's Star blog.  James reminds us of these basic rules.

*  The Bells of St. Michael's by Wayne Shepheard on the Discover Genealogy blog.  On Wayne's trip to Devon in 2004, he discovered that the church bells had his ancestor's name on them spelled the way he spells his name.

*  Ask Ancestry Anne: Why Can't I Find My Ancestor's World War II Veterans Records? by Anne Gillespie Mitchell on the Ancestry.com Blog.  Anne explains, but also links to the National Archives record holdings.

*  Review: Mind Maps for Genealogists by Ron Arons by Elyse Doerflinger on Elyse's Genealogy Blog.  Elyse reviewed Ron's new book.

*  Pensions, Cemeteries and Patriots by Diane Boumenot on the One Rhode Island Family blog.  Diane reviews one of her ancestral families in the Revolutionary Wart Pension files and Rhode Island cemeteries.

*  52 Ancestor Challenge: Week 26 Recap by Amy Johnson Crow on the No Story Too Small blog.  There are 116 posts in this week's recap.

*  Family History Research Trips for the Determined Genealogist by Holly T. Hansen on the Family History Expos Genealogy Blog.  Holy tells a great story of a research trip - excellent examples.  Been there, done that!

These genea-bloggers wrote weekly pick posts and news summary posts this week:

*  Blog Posts and News Stories for Genealogists, July 3, 2014 by Michael J. Leclerc on the Mocavo Genealogy Blog.

*  Follow Friday ~ Fab Finds for July 4, 2014 by Jana Last on Jana's Genealogy and Family History Blog.

*  Friday Finds - 07/04/14 by Julie Cahill Tarr on Julie's Genealogy & History Hub blog.

*  This Week's Creme de la Creme on the Genealogy a la Carte blog.

*  Saturday Serendipity (July 5, 2014) by John D. Tew on the Filiopietism Prism blog.

Readers are encouraged to go to the blogs listed above and read their articles, and add their blogs to your Favorites, Feedly, another RSS feed, or email if you like what you read. Please make a comment to them also - all bloggers appreciate feedback on what they write.

Did I miss a great genealogy blog post? Tell me! I am currently reading posts from over 1520 genealogy bloggers using Feedly, but I still miss quite a few it seems.
