52 Ancestors - Week 141: #186 Stephen Hazard (1730-1804)

Amy Johnson Crow suggested a weekly blog theme of "52 Ancestors" in her blog post Challenge:  52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks on the No Story Too Small blog.  I am extending this theme in 2016 to 156 Ancestors in 156 Weeks. Here is my ancestor biography for week #141:

 Stephen Hazard (1730-1804) is #186 on my Ahnentafel list, my 5th great-grandfather, who married #187 Elizabeth Carpenter (1741-????) in about 1760.

I am descended through:

*  their daughter,
#93 Mary Hazard (1765-1857) who married #92 Joseph Oatley (1756-1815) in 1781.
*  their son #46 Jonathan Oatley (1790-1872) who married #47 Amy Champlin (1798-1865) in 1823.
*  their daughter #23 Amy Frances Oatley (1826-1864) who married #22 Henry Arnold White (1824-1885) in 1844.
*  their daughter #11 Julie E. White (1848-1913), who married #10 Thomas Richmond (1848-1917) in 1868.
*  their daughter #5 Alma Bessie Richmond (1882-1962), who married #4 Frederick Walton Seaver (1876-1942) in 1900.
* their son #2 Frederick Walton Seaver (1911-1983), who married #3 Betty Virginia Carringer (1919-2002) in 1942.
*  their son #1 Randall J. Seaver (1943-....)

4)  NOTES (with source citations as indicated in brackets):

The book The Hazard Family of Rhode Island, 1635-1894 by Caroline Robinson Hazard (Boston, the author, 1895)[1], included information about this family (pages 70-71):

"274 Stephen Hazard was born about 1730.  He died October 24, 1804, in North Kingstown.  There is no certainty about the dates of his birth, of his marriage, or of the birth of his children, as no records can be found.  He was called 'Short Stephen' being one of the exceptional Hazards that could not boast of his six feet and great strength.  His mother, Hannah Slocum, was a very small woman, not over five feet in height, and so slight that her husband could span her waist with his two hands.

"Stephen Hazard adhered to the cause of the Crown during the war of 1776, and was one of those sent out of the town for giving aid to the enemy.  When allowed to return to the town, on his parole, he refused to serve when drafted.

"It is difficult to place his house, or the place where his children were born.  At one time he was the keeper of the lighthouse at Point Judith, and at another he was living in Jamestown.  He married, about 1760, Elizabeth, daughter of Daniel and Renewed (Smith) Carpenter."

Stephen and Elizabeth (Carpenter) Hazard had at least six children, and maybe more, between 1760 and 1773.  There are, apparently, no records for their births available.

The Narragansett Historical Register, Volume III, 1884-1885, published some of the records from the Revolutionary War.  In the section titled "Treatment of Tories in the Revolution," this was published (pages 264-265)[2]:

"To the Sheriff of the County of Kings County, or to his Deputy:

"Greeting.
Whereas the Committee appointed by the General Assembly to
make enquiry into the conduct of any persons resident on, or near
the shores of this state supposed of being inimical to the United
States and of giving intelligence to the enemy have had Stephen
Hazard, Christopher Robinson, and Sylvester Robinson, persons
who are suspected of being inimical to the United States. And
whereas the Committee have considered that it will be attended
with dangerous consequences to the public safety to permit said
Stephen Hazard, and his son Stephen ; and Christopher Robinson,
and said Sylvester Robinson and family to reside near the shores
of this State and have ordered said Stephen Hazard, and his son
Stephen to be removed to the Town of Cumberland, and said
Christopher Robinson to be removed to the Town of Seituate, and
,said Sylvester Robinson and his family to the Town of Gloucester,
all in said State. To remain within the limits of the respective
Towns upon their peril during the pleasure of the General
Assembly.

"You are therefore hereby commanded within twelve days from
the date hereof to take and remove the said Stephen Hazard, and
his sou Stephen, Christopher Robinson, and Sylvester Robinson
and family, to the several Towns above named respectively severally
to remain in said Towns as Ordered and not to go without
the limits of the same on their peril, but there to remain during
the pleasure of the General Assembly.

"Hereof fail not, and for your so doing this shall be your Sufficient Warrant.

"Given under Our Hand this Eighteenth day of August, A. D.
1779, and Fourth year of Independence.
OTHNIEL GORTON,          }
THOS. RUMRILL,               }
CHRISTOPHER GREENE,   } Committee.
MATTHEW MANCHESTER}
PETER PHILLIPS,               }

"SEPTEMBER ye 2d, 1779,

"In obedience to this Warrant I have removed the within named
Stephen Hazard and his son Stephen from the Town of South
Kingstown to the Town of Cumberland according to order.
B. BROWN, Sher. "

In the 1790 United States census, the Stephen Hazard household was enumerated in South Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island[3].  The household included:

*  1 free white male over age 16 (certainly Stephen)
*  1 free white male under age 16
*  1 free white female (certainly Elizabeth)

This household was enumerated just below the Joseph Oatley household.  Joseph Oatley married Mary Hazard, a daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth (Carpenter) Oatley.

In the 1800 United States census, the Stephen Hazard household was enumerated in South Kingstown, Washington County, Rhode Island[4].  The household included:

*  1 free white male under age 10
*  1 free white male over age 45 (certainly Stephen)
*  1 free white female aged 16 to 25
*  1 free white female over age 45 (certainly Elizabeth)
*  1 other free person

The only source found for the death date of Stephen Hazard is the sketch in the Hazard book.  There may be a record in the North Kingstown town records, which have not been reviewed.  There is no burial information available.

There are, apparently, no probate records for Stephen or Elizabeth (Carpenter) Hazard.
