Monday Genea-Pourri - 29 January 2018

Here are some of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week:

1)  I went with my Chula Vista Genealogical Society colleagues to the FamilySearch Library in Mission Valley last Wednesday.  I spent over three hours working through my to-do list in FamilySearch digital microfilm (most of which is not available at home, but is available at the FamilySearch libraries).  I came home with 52 digital images to enhance my research.  See
Visited the San Diego FamilySearch Library Today.

2)  We held our San Diego Genealogical Society RootsMagic User's Group meeting at the FamilySearch Library on Saturday morning with nine attendees.  I drive the computer and the program, and the attendees ask questions or pose problems to be answered.  It's a fast two hours.  We touched on editing persons, adding facts, notes, sources and media, merging persons, alternate names, sharing facts, attaching PDF files to a person, narrative reports, making calendars, FamilySearch Family Tree, Ancestry TreeShare and more.

3)  On Saturday afternoon, I gave my "Ancestry - Be a Genealogy Detective" talk at Mission Hills Public Library, arranged by OASIS (a local senior adult education center).  It was a small library with a great staff, set up in a corner with 30 folks in attendance on small chairs.  The talk is for beginners, but a few attendees had done some research.  There were lots of questions, especially about immigration and DNA.  I finally added several DNA slides to the presentation.

4)  Today's Mondays With Myrt on Zoom.us covered a lot of ground (as usual) - #GenChat on Twitter, the RootsTech mobile app and syllabus articles, Salt Lake City features, Pat's webinars, Pat K's World War II draft registration card and Ancestry sources, and more.  You can view it here (link to be added when available).

5)  I started downloading the RootsTech 2018 class handouts from http://app.core-apps.com/rootstech2018/events/view_by_day?tracks=&type= .  I've collected Wednesday's handouts, and will do the other four days over the next week.  The file names are random, so I replace the file name when I download it and before I save it, using "Author-Title" for the file name (e.g., "Thomas MacEntee -
Translation & Transcription Tools for Genealogy."  Note that these handouts are available for ANYONE to download either on that web page or on the mobile app - you don't have to be registered for RootsTech 2018.

6)  I have 268 Shared Ancestors on my AncestryDNA list (I had 268 last week), 709 4th cousins or closer (up from 700 last week), 606 pages (over 30,250 matches with at least 5 cM) (was 596 pages last week) of  matches.  I have 81 matches with 34 cM (0.5%) or more.  My highest match has 779 cM (11.5%).  I have 14 DNA Circles (no change for weeks). There were no new close matches (3rd cousin or closer).  Very few of the new matches have an Ancestry Member Tree.

7)  I have 2,443 DNA Matches on MyHeritage (up from 2,247 last week) with at least 8 cM (0.1%), with 17 matches with more than 34 cM (0.5%) or more.  The highest match is 184 cM (2.5%).  Most of my close matches have very small trees with no common ancestors shown.

8)  I have 1,142 DNA Relatives on 23andMe (down from 1,150 last week) who share at least 0.10% with me.  Of these, only 1 shares 1.0% or more, and 35 share 0.50% or more (was 22 last week), with the highest match being 1.54%.  I struggle to find out anything about most of these testers.

9)  I have 2,306 autosomal DNA Matches on FamilyTreeDNA (up from 2,272) who share 0.25% (18 cM) or more, with the highest match being 96 cM (1.42%).  I have 12 who share at least 1.0% (68 cM) with me, and 1,213 who share at least 0.50% (34 cM) or more with me.  I have had better luck finding shared ancestors with a few of these testers.

10)  There were almost daily sessions working in RootsMagic to update FamilySearch Family Tree profiles for Seaver families and other ancestral families, with occasional additions to the RootsMagic profiles. I have matched 22,246 of my persons with FSFT.  I now have 49,589 persons in my RootsMagic file.   I TreeShare almost every night.  There were also several sessions in Ancestry Hints to add content and source citations for the new RootsMagic profile additions.   I've fallen behind on the Record Hints with 56,664 waiting to be resolved, but I'm working on it.  Every time I add something to RootsMagic and TreeShare, the Hints multiply.

Hi, Randy,

How do you find out the number of pages on AncestryDNA? They used to show the number of pages at the upper right of the match pages but I don't see that any more. See you at RootsTech for my first time. Judith Culver

Hi Judith,

To answer your question about counting the pages: I edit the URL for the page, replacing page '1' with '100' then '200' until I pass the last page, which gives me an error, and then seek until I find.

For example, the URL for the first page of 50 on my my AncestryDNA All Matches list ends with:

...filterBy=ALL&sortBy=RELATIONSHIP&page=1

So I substitute '100' for the '1' at the end then '200' then '300' etc. Now I start with last weeks number and seek the last page. Note the number, multiply by 50 and get an approximate number for number of matches.

Now I know what to do.

Thanks a bunch.
