Monday Genea-Pourri - 8 January 2018

Here are some of my family history and genealogy related activities over the past week (I missed the last week because of New Years):

1)  I bought a 64 gb USB drive and a HDMI to VGA adapter (for use with the CVGS VGA projector) to use with my new HP Envy laptop (my major Christmas gift) on Amazon with a Christmas gift card.

2)  I have 262 Shared Ancestors on my AncestryDNA list (I had 255 last week), 682 4th cousins or closer (up from 665 last week), 574 pages (over 28,700 matches with at least 5 cM) (was 553 pages last week) of  matches.  I have 14 DNA Circles (no change for weeks). There were no new close matches (3rd cousin or closer).

3)  I have 278 DNA Matches on MyHeritage (up from 270 last week).  There were no new close matches this week.

4)  I have 1174 DNA Relatives on 23andMe (up from 1170 last week) who share at least 0.10% with me.  Of these, only 9 share 1.0% or more, 18 share 0.50% or more, with the highest being 1.54%.  These matches are the most difficult to find out anything about the testers.

5)  I have 2248 autosomal DNA Matches on FamilyTreeDNA (up from 2222) who share 0.25% (18 cM) or more, with the highest match being 1.42% (96 cM).  I have 12 who share at least 1.0% (68 cM) with me, and 1205 who share at least 0.50% (34 cM) or more with me.  I have had better luck finding shared ancestors with a few of these testers.

6)  There were daily sessions working in RootsMagic to update FamilySearch Family Tree profiles for Seaver families and other ancestral families, with occasional additions to the RootsMagic profiles. I have matched 21,508 of my persons with FSFT.  I now have 49,332 persons in my RootsMagic file.   I TreeShare almost every night.  There were also several sessions in Ancestry Hints to add content and source citations for the new RootsMagic profile additions.   I've fallen behind on the Record Hints with 53,126 waiting to be resolved, but I'm working on it.  Every time I add something to RootsMagic and TreeShare, the Hints multiply.

7)  Today's Mondays With Myrt webinar used the new-to-me Zoom.us webinar platform.  This results in a larger and clearer screen, and most viewers loved it.  There's a learning curve for presenters and viewers.  It is be available to watch on YouTube.  The ten presenters introduced themselves; discussed DNA tests; Dnaiel Horowitz discussed MyHeritage; Fiona Fitzsimons talked about APG and Irish research; two new study groups will work through Val Greenwood book and the Albion's Seed book; the panel was asked questions from Julie Goucher's "Book Of Me" theme; Anna found a relative's Canadian Expeditionary File on Libraries and Archives Canada; and more.

8)  I had my first experience with the new-to-me WebinarJam platform in a practice session with Andy Lee for the 19 January Family Stories webinar.  They couldn't hear my voice on the desktop computer, but could on the new laptop.

9)  The CVGS board meeting was last Wednesday, and I published the January 2018 CVGS Newsletter on Sunday night via email.  The monthly Research Group is this coming Wednesday, and I am gathering genealogy news information from the last two months to present to the group.

10)  I relearned an important lesson two weeks ago - see Dear Randy - You Really Should Check the Probate Record Indexes!   The results of that lesson fed information into the 52 Ancestors post and two Amanuensis Monday posts for Jabez Snow.
